NEW YORK -- Free agent Pedro Astacio and the Mets reached agreement on a one-year deal Wednesday night, giving New York a much-needed righty for its rotation.

Astacio gets a $5 million salary for 2002, and can make another $5 million in performance bonuses. His contract can become guaranteed for 2003 if he pitches a certain amount of innings.

I can't wait till he isn't worth the paper his contract was written on.

Which is why the Mets were smart enough to pack half the contract into incentives. If he pitches like shit, he's gonna get paid the rate most MLB 5th starters get paid, and not a penny more.
