Quote:you are truly clueless. the saudi peace proposal is a farce.
arafat is far from a voice of reason. for you to say that shows your incredible ignorance on this issue. the israelis offered arafat everything he asked for in Oslo. when faced with the acceptance of all his demands, he said no, left Oslo, and started the current intifadeh. what you dont realize is that the palestinians have never wanted peace. they want israel destroyed. that is why in every speech arafat has ever given, you hear no mention of proposed palestinian industry, infrastructure, education. he is less concerned with creating a nation as he is with destroying a nation. the first concern of any nation is the safety of its citizens, yet the palestinians main weapons are its citizens. as stated in the NY times today, if the palestinians had chosen a ghandi-esque approach, they would have achieved statehood 30 years ago. but over and over they have shown that this has never been thier goal. i think the recent israeli actions were long overdue.
they have a right to secure the safety of its citizens against these craven suicide attacks. unfortunatley all peace attempts have failed and the Israelis now feel their only course to safety is the complete dismantling of the palestinian power structure through force. i can hardly blame them and on a small level look forward to it.
Woah there big guy. If you check your history, Arafat was calling for the destruction of Israel pre-Oslo. Times were different and then, Israel had still not come to peace with its neighbors (namely Syria). During Oslo, the Palestinians officially recognized Israel as a state.
You have to understand that the Palestinians themselves didn't invade Israel in the late 40s, it was the Arab League (Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq and possibly a few others). After Israel drove them out of their own territory they then went on and took areas designated for the Arab state (Palestinians). After the 48 conflict, Israel controlled more than its fair share and the Egyptians and Jordanians controlled the West Bank and Gaza strip. Already the Israelis had invaded a UN mandated area.
The Palestinians have a right to be angry. Granted Arafat isn't the best solution, but there should be a Palestinian state along side an Israel.

i agree that there should be a palestinian state. i dont, however, think that the palestinians want one unless it means the eradication of israel. i believe that deep in the heart of this matter that this is not about land, the palestinians could have had that in oslo. i think its about the arab world not wanting a bunch of jews in their back yard.

On one hand I would like to see an independent Palestinian state. On the other hand I would like to see a binational state(something Edward Said has suggested). The latter seems less likely as militants will resist it on both sides even moreso than option a.

first of all, arafat has called for the disruction of israel since 1959, there was no west bank or gaza under israeli control. he also called for the distruction of jordan cuz they too occupy "palestinian land" jordan threw them out in 1972 after they tried to over-throw king hussain 3 times. the plo is an organization that began in "officially" in 1964, not in 1967, and they have and continue to call for the disrtuction of the sate of israel. part of oslo was that the palestinians would re-write that israel is their enemy, but that has never been done.
i am all for a palestinian state, but not under the plo. there will be someone else in the future with whom israel can deal. but unfortunately for now, there in no one.
the plo has called for international observers, well here's what they do to them:
INT'L OBSERVER DESCRIBES HOW ARAB MURDERED HIS COLLEAGUES
Turkish Capt. Huseyin Ozaslah, a member of the Temporary International
Presence in Hebron (TIPH) who was attacked by a Palestinian terrorist on
Tuesday night, was phone-interviewed in English on Israel Radio on his way
to the hospital. Maj. Cengiz Soytunc of Turkey and Catherine Berruex of
Switzerland were murdered in the ambush shooting. The following is a
transcript of the interview with Capt. Ozaslah, the sole survivor, as
prepared by IMRA (<www.imra.org.il>):
Capt. Ozaslah: There were three people and we were driving in an Opel
Corsa. I was sitting in the back seat and one colleague was driving and one
female colleague was sitting in the front seat and we were just getting out
of Hebron. Then we heard some shooting towards our car. We were very fast -
90 kilometers per hour - and this Palestinian was just standing in the
middle of this road.
Reporter: Could you see him?
Ozaslah: Yes. Yes. The lights were on and we saw him. He was in a PPF
uniform, a Palestinian Police Force uniform. He was carrying a Kalashnikov
and we shouted towards him that "we are from the TIPH - don't shoot at us".
We could hardly stop the car. There were only 5 or 6 meters from the man
and our car. And he didn't stop.
Reporter: You told him that you were from TIPH and he continued to shoot?
Ozaslah: Yes. We told him that we were from TIPH and he didn't care. He
kept shooting towards us. My colleagues sitting in the front seat were shot
dead. The driver's blood splashed on my face and I was also injured. He
finished his magazine and he didn't check if all of us were dead or not and
he escaped.
But I saw him. That he had a Palestinian police force uniform and was
carrying a Kalashnikov and he finished his whole magazine - thirty bullets
at least. He was about 30 years old.

Can you blame them? When the state was created Jews only made up 13% of Israel. The land is really theirs.(http://mondediplo.com/1997/11/israel). The only reason the British were in control of it post-World War 1 was to over see the creation of both states.
I agree that the sentiment among Palestinians is pretty angry, but you can't blame them. Place America in Palestine's shoes and Canada in Israel's. You can imagine how you'd get fucking pissed.

I would like to happily admit that in regards to this specific incident, I am a blissfully ignorant American. I have no idea what the fuck is going on, and I don't really care since it won't affect gas prices (I think)
I hope the good guys win, and the bad guys lose. Go Good Guys!!!!

Are the Jews the good guys now? If they're suppposed to be the good guys, then I'm torn. I normally don't like them. But if the bad guys are the terrorists, then I'm back on the side of the Jews.
As long as Must-See-TV isn't pre-empted like it was in September, I don't really care
