The Mets have reached an agreement for a trade to bring Carlos Delgado from the Marlins, Newsday has learned. The trade won't be finalized until medical examinations of the players involved are complete and commissioner Bud Selig signs off on the deal.

The Mets have agreed to send righthanded pitching prospect Yusmeiro Petit and young first baseman Mike Jacobs to the Marlins for Delgado, according to someone familiar with the deal. As part of the deal, the Marlins will send $7 million back to the Mets to cover part of the $48 million remaining on Delgado's contract.

Delgado, 33, does not have veto powers over a trade. The lefthanded-hitting first baseman batted .301 with 33 home runs and 115 RBIs last year with the Marlins.

Acquiring a player with Delgado's credentials could also help the Mets sign closer Billy Wagner, who has told the team that winning a championship is his first priority. The Mets offered Wagner a three-year, $30-million deal yesterday after taking him on a tour of the New York suburbs earlier this week, but the Phillies are expected to counter.

Jacobs, 25, batted .310 with 11 homers in 100 at bats with the Mets after being called up in mid-August.

Petit, who turned 21 yesterday, is considered the Mets' top pitching prospect. He was 9-3 with a 2.92 ERA last year at Double-A Binghamton.

I like this deal because if Jacobs or Petit become good the Mets will get them back in a couple of years when the Marlins cut payroll again.
What about pitching? What are they going to do when they give up 9 runs a game and only score 3?
Pedro, Glavine, Benson, Traschel, Seo, Heilman, Zambrano

And, i'm not sure Omar is done yet in the pitching department.
let's stop the speculation!!!
HAY METS, STOP HOGGING ALL THE FREE AGENTS!

How good is Delgado?

2005 AVG OBP SLG

Player A: .300-.397-.604

B: .292-.388-.594

C: .291 - .379 - .512

Delgado: .301-.399-.582 (in NL pitchers park).

Player A - David Ortiz

B: Manny Ramirez

C: Sheffield

And for comparison, here is ARod:

.321-.421-.610
would you rather have delgado than Ortiz or Manny?
i think ortiz and delgado are the same, but i'd rather have manny or sheffield if i was convinced he was relatively healthy than either of them, but not by a wide margin.

i'd take arod over all of them, but only by a small margin over manny.
isn't sheffield like 36? delgado is only 33
yeah ortiz and delgado are the same, in what world?
Three year averages...

Ortiz, 75 runs, 139 hits, 31 HRs, 105 RBIs, 59 walks, .289 avg, .366 OBP

Delgado, 98 runs, 145 hits, 36 HRs, 117 RBIs, 93 walks, .284 avg, .403 OBP

You could even make a case that Delgado is better than Ortiz over the past 3 seasons.

As far as what Hedcold said, I'm not considering contracts and length of career, i'm simply comparing the players as they are now and what they would do for a team in 2006. I would certainly take Delgado over Sheffield in a deal of 3-4 years.

Three year average...

Sheffield, 108 runs, 169 hits, 33 HRs, 112 RBIs, 83 walks, .309 avg, .405 OBP
