Quote:but Ice Cube has made the move from music to the big screen playing many uppity militant black roles
I think the most successful transition from rapper to movies were Ice T and LL Cool J. The play the roles that aren't your typical "gangsta" guy. I thought LL was fuckin hysterical in that shark movie as the religious chef and I remember Ice T playing a couple of really good cop roles.

I have to agree with Galt, NWA started the whole gangsta rap genre, but I happen to dig some of the De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Jungle Brothers, Native Tongue type stuff. The political Public Enemy and KRS-One shit is very much the backbone of old school as well.

NBK? Best Cube song ever???
No fucking way. Today was a Good Day has to be his best solo effort. In fact, that whole Predator album was amazing. Inspired by Rodney King, and the riots, it was his most emotional and politically charged album. Wicked and Now I'm Gonna Wetcha were very hard rock/rap songs which preceded Rage Against the Macine and penultimate rock/rap compilation album: Judgement Night Soundtrack.
It was Predator where he made his leap from gang-banging booty-bitch pimp on Death Certificate (Givin up the Nappy Dugout) to more political activism and serious work he is doing today.

NWA was well before PE.
And if you want to talk rappers to movies. Name a better rapper in a role than Ice Cube in Boyz n the Hood? No one comes close. He was real good in Higher Learning and Three Kings too.
Tupac was actually a real good actor (in some bad movies, but he could act). Above the Rim was his shining moment.
Though, if you are counting Will Smith as an rapper, the argument stops there. Six Degrees of Separation, and that Fresh Prince episode where Carlton almost dies when he sneaks some of Will's speed. Just touching touching moments right there.

Quote:Free Will
RUSH - Lyrics by Neil Peart "Permanent Waves" Copyright 1980 Mercury/Polygram
There are those who think that life has nothing left to chance,
A host of holy horrors to direct our aimless dance.
A planet of playthings,
We dance on the strings
Of powers we cannot perceive
"The stars aren't aligned -
Or the gods are malign"
Blame is better to give than receive.
You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;
I will choose a path that's clear-
I will choose Free Will.
There are those who think that they were dealt a losing hand,
The cards were stacked against them - they weren't born in Lotus-Land.
All preordained-
A prisoner in chains-
A victim of venomous fate.
Kicked in the face,
You can't pray for a place
In Heaven's unearthly estate.
You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;
I will choose a path that's clear-
I will choose Free Will.
Each of us-
A cell of awareness-
Imperfect and incomplete.
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt that's far too fleet.
What's the matter, Kid...did you run out of original thoughts.....you know...the ones you accused me of not having?

I too love Tribe Called Quest and De la Soul. I'm not really into the gangsta rap shit. I like my rhymes to have more of a lighthearted flow to them.
I also feel the rhymes in the Jungle Brothers music. Quality stuff.
How can you forget the Beasties? Especially the stuff they did with Q-Tip?
