Quote:I just tend to question the validity of "scientific fact". But, can you explain the phenomena of gyroscopes? How in the hell do they defy gravity?

It's good that you question things. But you have to understand that you must accept some aspects of a system in order to build on it. You must accept the laws of gravition and electro-magnetic forces in order to understand orbital mechanics...shit like that

About the gyroscope thing, what you are refering to is a phenomenon known as precession. I can try to explain it, but there is a site that does a pretty good job of doing just that. Try this site How Stuff Works: Gyroscope

It's a pretty straightforward and simple explaination.
Hey doc since you're so good at answering questions here's another one. Why can't I find a beautiful woman to have sex with me?

Explanation... rationalization... what's the difference?

As humans, we generally fear things we can't explain. This is why we have scientists, to calm our fears. Realistically, there are probably things that we think we understand, that we truly are clueless about.

Ok come on there is a really easy joke here people. Take your shots asap.
i think questioning some stuff is overrated. if you ask why, are you really that much smarter? i'm not saying you're dumber for asking why, but why would you be smarter?
i think the people who ask why and have solid arguments to back it up are the 'smarter' ones. i mean anyone can take something, play around with words and philosophy, and come out with a question. its people that can put one and one together, form a basis, and question something that is believed to be true that i admire. but just to say why, and not back it up with anything other then 'i find it hard to believe', i don't see anything special in that.
I have a strange idea. Can "realization" be attained on an individual basis? There are certain psycological effects associated with group activities. Whether they're ball games, picnics, religious ceromonies, orgies or whatever. I for one "feel" differently in group settings. It might just be me but being around a large number of people who all share a common goal, idea, pleasure, etc. brings with it an "energy" that is difficult to put into words. What if the global population were to just stop simultaneously whatever they're daily activities might be and focus on the questions each of us as individuals struggle with occassionally such as what is real, why are we here, and so on? What if we all looked towards the sky and shouted into the heavens, "OK we've had enough. What's the deal?" Would the sky open up with God saying, "Ok game over. You win."? Probably not. We'd all just look like a bunch of assholes.
I guess I see questioning it as theorizing on what else is possible, rather than proposing that it is wrong or I have a better explanation. Is there something wrong with thinking about things that are just accepted? I mean, if everyone in history never thought there was a better way to explain something, we'd still be living in caves.

Your 3 dimensional blackboard is this message board here? KidA is Sherman? And the timeline has been set to 1620? Man, this is weird
Asking "why" is good because then it inspires someone to get the balls to ask "how" and start doing experiments and things to determine "how" and then later someone says "why" to the currently accepted "how" and it is disproved and someone goes and finds a different "how". That's how science progresses in our society. A question is asked someone finds an answer and then the answer is questioned.

I don't want to step on Grumpy's toes here, so I will repectfully decline the invitation to make all kinds of fun of you

i just think theres a difference when questioning certain things. to question something 1000 yrs ago, even a century ago, is so much different then questioning things now.
Why?

Look at the things we've learned over time. And, as time has passed, our intelligence has grown exponentially. This makes me think that we are on the verge of a paradigm shift. Something that will turn the world upside-down. Imagine if we found out what happens to us when we die...
Black is just the over-abundance of color. Too much makes it too dark, too little makes it to light.Confusedcare:
I have a theory that we all see completely different colors, hear completely different sounds, feel completely different textures, etc. For example, I see a color is gray, while you see it as red. When you say it is red, I hear you say it is gray. It's not something I truly believe nor does believing it have any practical function, but there is really no way to disprove it. It's just fun to think about the possibilities that exist in a world like this.

see i think its stuff like sleeper just posted is more along the line of what i'm refering to. if he does really think that it doesn't make him dumber, but does it make him smarter? creative, yes. smarter, i don't know. theres just too many possibilities any one person can come up with along those same lines, and theres no real way to disprove it.
however, i realize this is also perspective based and i'm sure theres probably some weird ass thing i believe that you can sit there and think is crazy as well.
