does it count if i am on kens lap at the time?
I dunno...I wish I could go back about 5-10 years, but still know what I know now!
ikea, thriller came out in 83. and considering in general people's earliest memories begin around the age of 3, i'm gonna say this list is more about things that happened around 85/86. and as far as remembering tv things, well, there's nickatnite for that, so those don't count. i call shenanigans on your shenanigans.
Gee, thanks. Like I haven't been feeling older already with my friends getting married.

And I too can remember a time before microwaves became popular and B&W TV's were sold in stores.

I also rember going home for lunch in grammer school and seeing the replays of the shuttle explosion.

I also remember my neighbor being the first person in our neighborhood to get cable TV. And it was by satellite and only had four channels including HBO.

I remember the introduction of Beta Max and then VHS. I remember going to the store to buy our first VCR and my parents didn't know which one to get. We got VHS. Good choice.

I remember watcing Scooby Doo when they were first run episodes.
Hmm, let's see if I'm old yet...

1) The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1983.

Born in 77, never went to college. I've been considering going, guess I'll have to tune up on my Linkin Park and Survivor knowledge...

2) They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.

I was in 3rd grade, and I even made the channel 9 news because of it. They were asking kids their opinions about the explosion. I wish I had tape...

3) Their lifetime has always included AIDS.

I remember when AIDS first broke out. This is depressing...

4) Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic.

Good beer still requires an actual bottle opener. Next question...

5) The CD was introduced the year they were born.

I remember buying fucking RECORDS! Vinyl! damn...

6) They have always had an answering machine.

I still don't have one. Bah!

7) They have always had cable.

I can't remember a time without cable. But I also remember being mega-cool, cause I actually had it. Score one for me, I guess...

8) They cannot fathom not having a remote control.

And this, I definitely remember. My attention span quickly dropped when I learned the beauty of teh clicker.

9) Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.

No. Next.

10) Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.

Had a popper.

11) They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.

I think I had seen Jaws at a young age, but was able to separate fantasy from reality. Next question.

12) They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.

My mom had those.

13) They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.

He was from another planet. Robin Williams played him. Close enough?

14) They've never heard:
a. "Where's the Beef?",

Clara Peller! There's no way in hell I couldn't know this, as she has my surname.

b. "I'd walk a mile for a Camel", or

I remember.

c. "de plane Boss, de plane".

I know this, but only through VH1 type nostalgia shows. As a child, I had no knowledge of Tattoo.

15) They do not care who shot J. R. and have no idea who J. R. even is.

I know I've heard who shot J.R., and that "Dallas" was the show, but if you ask me now, I couldn't tell you who it was. But I could tell you who shot Monty Burns(!)

16) Michael Jackson has always been white.

No, he really was black. I swear.

17) McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers.

Bah! I even remember when they changed to cardboard containers, to help save the environment or something. I think the McDLT was the last of their styrofoam-encased products.

> 18) They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter

I certainly do.

Thanks OAS, now you've shown me that a 24 year old verile young man is actually a bitter nostalgic carcass. I'm so happy right now .
I think that's a pretty funny list. I really don't feel my age...usually I feel older and I usually have to stop and think about how old I really am. I found a site that allows you to see what things were kinda like when you were born.....

BTW, I think the point many of you are missing is that if you were born in 1983, you probably don't have conscious memories of things that happened in 1986.

I think it's kind of funny to think about the shit that kids today are accustomed to. IMO, you haven't lived if you've never changed the channel on your TV with a pair of pliers. Smile

Oh, and how many of us know why a remote control is called a "clicker"?
goddamn they made alot of noise.
Ok...I am 5 years old here. This makes more sense because I actually remember some of this stuff.
