I think the problem with saying the pledge is that they never teach you why you say it, or what meaning it really has.

Yeah really how many kids really care about the pledge? About 0%. All it is is some words they have to say before going to their first class of the day.

I don't think the people teaching it to us really understood what it or this country stood for until recently too. I think when we all have children one day, the level of patriotism we raise our families with will be starkly different than that with which we were all raised.

Quote:when did i say that?all i said was that the plege itself is pointless, since the vast majority of people view it as simply words.i do have aligance to the country, but it has nothing to do with the pledge that never once had a meaning from the day it was beaten into my brain
Quote:i dont see the point of the entire pledge.i saw it all every day in school, and it wont stop me from treason or anything.its words that i say by memory, no real meaningPledging allegiance to the flag of a nation suggests you wouldn't commit treason and you are indivisable of your beliefs in what your nation stands for. Fight to the death to protect it's principals.

Quote:Pledging allegiance to the flag of a nation suggests you wouldn't commit treason and you are indivisable of your beliefs in what your nation stands for. Fight to the death to protect it's principals.how does standing up in class or at a ballgame reciting the pledge make this true? it should be in your heart not by reciting some mindless pledge

So are we going to be using not saying the pledge as evidence for being treasonous now?

Just like the preist takes the vow of celibacy? Seriously, just because you say something and appear to believe something doesn't mean it's true. Just look at how many divorces there are in this country.

It's 31 fucking words swearing your commitment to what so many have fought for us to have. If you can't decipher the meaning of 31 words, none over 3 sylables and you need someone to explain it to you, God (ooops) help us all. If you say it without meaning it, be like the muslim kid and don't say it. The next plane for Iraq leaves in the morning. Get the fuck on it!
Sorry, the grandpa in me is getting mad at the children for not showing respect.
Carry on.

You can instill love of liberty in one by actually discussing the subject because that'll probably work better than just giving them a pledge.

Quote:Pledging allegiance to the flag of a nation suggests you wouldn't commit treason and you are indivisable of your beliefs in what your nation stands for. Fight to the death to protect it's principalsUh... I think that's his point, old guy. That we (meaning every child in every public school in the united states) are instructed to make this pledge wether we agree or even understand what we're saying.
Call me a coward but, I'm not willing to "fight to the death to protect it's principals". That's what I pay taxes for. So, someone else can "fight to the death to protect it's principals" for me.

i show respect with what is in my heart, not by droning out some pledge.

Not really...I mean the issue here is the word God...OAS feels the pledge promises loyalty to the country which we all seem to be in agreement that the majority of the time it's just said out of habit and not with understanding, and well when you're married you promise loyalty before god too. Sometimes words are empty....(just to make things clear this isn't an anti-divorce line, it's just a comparison)

You don't need to say the pledge anyway to be convicted of treason so why do you need words to prove loyalty.
06-26-2002, 08:14 PM
btw...
I don't see a whole lotta you folks fighting to the death to protect principals like "liberty" and "justice" when anyone wearing a turbin is yanked from a commercial airline.
So, it's "justice for all" that look like you?
