Tonight on PPV, Fernando Vargas Vs. Oscar De La Hoya, to decide who is the 154 pound king. Should be a great fight, these two guys have a unique disliking for eachother that stems back for quite a number of years. This is the last "big" fight of the year and the last one which stands a chance to win "Fight of the year" over Gatti Vs. Ward.

This is really a pick 'em type fight, I can see either one winning. But if anyone is getting knocked out it is definetly gonna be Oscar. My choice for the winner is Vargas, for 2 reasons.

1 - He hates Oscar with a passion and wants to beat him, badly.

2 - Oscars hands are in bad shape.

so Vargas by decision or late round TKO.
I agree with ya. Vargas should win by most likely by decision in the late rounds. I will not see the fight though tonight since it's 50 fucking dollars. I'll catch it next weekend on HBO.
I'm rooting for the spic
always bet on black
I pick Vargas in a decision as well. Oscar does not get knocked out, but i hate him so I choose the other guy.
A lot of people are basically picking Oscar, well cause he is better known. But for the boxing fans, they believe Trinidad won the fight for Oscar a couple years ago. Trinidad beat Vargas, badly. But I think it works the other way around, I think Vargas learned from his mistake. Which was coming in with the feeling he had something to prove against a great fighter. I don't think there will be any "brawl" till about rounds 3-5.
Well i didnt see the fight but i they said on ESPN that Oscar won in the 11th by TKO.
I saw it. great fight. Fight of the year candidate.
anyone know when HBO will be replaying this fight?
9:45pm Sat, Sept 21st
I'm still disgusted, Oscar was NOT supposed to still be this fuckin good. I tip my hat to the guy he proved a lot of people wrong, guess his heart trully is back in the game. It's not a candidate for fight of the year but Ward Vs. Gatti still stands above it. It was a good fight with a spectacular finish. I thought Vargas had him in round 1 when he put him almost through the ropes. Then in round 9 I thought he had Oscar again. Vargas was the stronger of the two but it goes to show brains will always beat brawn i.e Ali vs. Foreman.
Looks like Vargas let us all down in more than one way

Quote:September 27, 2002

JERSEY CITY (Ticker) - Super welterweight Fernando Vargas, who boasted about his physical condition before suffering an 11th-round technical knockout against Oscar de la Hoya on September 14, has tested positive for a banned anabolic steroid.

Mark Ratner, the executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commissioner, confirmed that a post-fight urinalysis showed the steroid stanozolol. A complaint is expected to be filed Monday or Tuesday and Vargas will have 30 days to have his case heard before th commission. There is no minimum or maximum penalty for testing positive.

The 24-year-old Vargas (22-2, 20 KOs) appeared bigger and stronger than de la Hoya at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino two weeks ago, but was absorbing several punches without retaliation and was knocked down in the 11th round. Vargas stormed out of the ring without talking to reporters and was treated at a local hospital.

Vargas' other loss came against former champion Felix Trinidad in December 2000. He won two fights before meeting de La Hoya, a bout that he wanted for several years.

This is a disgrace, he has convinced us all that he worked hard to get into top shape, if he woulda won it woulda been even worse. But what does it say when even on roids, Oscar still knocked his ass out?
Ivan Drago?
Irony at it's best!! I watched the fight. Although I'm not a huge boxing fan, I thought that was a great fight. Just proves the point that the sport can be won with strategy, not just brute strength!

I'm glad he tested positive for drug abuse, not that even suspected it before I read that article. There are still a few things on this earth you can do better clean and sober.
First off if true, Vargas should be fined and suspended for a while. He is a piece of shit if he did this.

Second it proves what I always thought, Trinidad murders careers. Look at David Reid, Trinidad won the fight more so than Oscar did to be honest. I thought Vargas had the mentality to get over it, obviously not.

Too much, too soon, too young... recipe for a disaster.

But as much as I hate to admit it, Oscar is the man. He honestly is that good, he just had to remind us again I guess.
De La Hoya finally should back on track...one thing can be said...he doesn't duck tough fights. Vargas, i never did like. Looked scummy to me.

OTHER BOXING THOUGHTS:

Overall...I miss Sweetpea Whitaker. :-(

I'd really like to see my fave, Roy Jones, lose some poundage and decimate Trinidad and company.

When will Naseem get beaten again....I anxiously await. Limey faggot.
I think most boxing fans feel the same sentiments for sweet pea. But he left at the proper time, what all his fans can hope is he can live a normal life and get back on tracks. Get off the drugs and not become another tragic figure.

Hamed was nothing more than fan fare and smoke and mirrors. He was a showman, not a prize fighter. I knew the moment he stepped in against a top ranked fighter he would be exposed. His style was eye candy but it was too open for counters. Plus his weight worked against him, not his physicaly weight but the fact he was always off balanced and primed for a knock down and knock out. Over the hill kevin kelly, knocked naz down several times even though naz ko'ed a near 40 year old shadow of a former legend.

Barerra put on a clinic against Naseem, he dethroned the prince who was just another wanna be occupant of the throne. Yeah Naseem, how about trying that metaphor of how you are "greater than willie pep".

As far as the most naturally gifted athlete on the planet goes. Roy Jones or his alter ego 'RJ' finally have a worthy opponent at light heavy. Antonio Tarver who demolished #1 ranked eric harding with a vicious 5th round KO. Harding who lost to jones in a great fight a few years back seemed destened to beat Tarver, whom he decisioned to get his original shot at jones. Tarver looks primed for a title shot and might prove to be an entertaining or at the very least a game opponent. After that we would all like to see Jones move back down, to atleast 168 at a catchweight with almost any of the bigger named fighters. 160 maybe asking too much.

Some other random thoughs.

Tyson is scheduled to meet clifford ettiene in december, this is the perfect match up for tyson to gain back, 1st off some pride in himself and also some dredibility. Ettiene is taylor made for tyson, a big heavy, who comes straight forward and has a weak chin. But his style makes him entertaining to watch.

After that look for Tyson to take on Ruiz for the wba belt.

Lennox lewis was stripped of the IBF belt, cause of reluctance to fight Chris Byrd. This leave lennox with just one belt, the wbc belt. We go from undisputed champ with all 3 belts, back to all 3 belts split up. But in all of our minds lennox is still 'undisputed' champ.

Byrd will Fight Holyfield for the IBF title, since they are ranked 1 and 2, repsectivly. If tyson should beat Ruiz, look for a possible 3rd fight between tyson and holyfield, which would sadly see both men as champs.

Hey it is all within the realm of possibility.
Ward-Gatti rematch In November. I cant wait. Ward his been my favorite fighter for years, mainly because he's white, but talent had a little to do with It.
The last fight was beyond-words great. I was jumping up and down yelling at my TV like a nutball.
Yes the rematch will be awesome, I read Ward's interview with KO magazine this month. He is basically the sammy sosa of boxing, not skill wise but personality wise. He loves and respects the sport and it's participants, much like Gatti. Ward said he will do his best to make a war of it, since this will be his next to last professional bout.

2 more fights tops, then a farewell fight against a 'safe' opponent in his hometown. Possibly a 3rd Gatti fight will be his farewell, if Gatti can win the 2nd fight.
