Im no Phish fan but Ive seen live video of them. They seem to be much better after they have been on stage for a couple of songs.
NIN is the same way, they suck at one song appearnces but KILL during a full show.

I question their thinking regarding these big appearences like this. While I think they did a great job on SNL, they tend to be more reserved on Letterman. They tear it up everytime they're on Conan though. I don't know if it's a case of nerves or time constraints or what, but they don't really turn heads when they're on Letterman and I wonder if they do it purposely. There was a kickass Hard Rock Live performance on VH1 a couple of years ago that I believe just felt more like one of their shows to them.
