I just read that Doc Gooden is gonna be managing the Gulf Coast Yankees. It reminded me that Luis Sojo manages a minor league team... Anyone know which team he manages (or managed last season)?

I believe it's the Norwich Navigators.

The Yankees announced the honor at a news conference before the start of a series against the Cincinnati Reds.

Jeter is the 11th captain in Yankees history, an honor also bestowed upon Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Thurman Munson, Willie Randolph, Ron Guidry and Graig Nettles. The last Yankees captain was Don Mattingly, who retired in 1995.

The honor is one of the biggest yet for Jeter, who starting racking up awards as soon as he became the Yankees shortstop in 1996. He was the AL Rookie of the Year, MVP of the All-Star Game and World Series and is a five-time All-Star.

He won four World Series championships and five American League pennants in his first six seasons, but wound up defending himself as spring training opened in February.

In the offseason, Steinbrenner questioned Jeter's work ethic and focus. Steinbrenner was unhappy after reading a newspaper report that the shortstop was out late at a birthday party.

When he showed up for the start of spring training, Jeter defended his lifestyle and said he was stung by suggestions he parties too much.

Steinbrenner also said the 28-year-old still wasn't ready to become the team's captain. Jeter, who is in the third year of a 10-year, $189 million contract, didn't sound concerned.

"If you ask every person that ever played baseball, they would love to be a team captain," Jeter said at the time, "but that's something that's entirely up to him."

Later, Steinbrenner and Jeter made fun of their feud in a credit-card commercial.

Manager Joe Torre said at the time that he didn't think it was necessary to have a team captain, but would change his mind if Steinbrenner decided to appoint one.

Jeter was sidelined for six weeks after dislocating his left shoulder while sliding headfirst into third base during the season opener at Toronto.

wow, that's what all the hoopla was about - everyone thought the brass was there to annouce a potential signing of a left slugger that they've been looking for.

I think it's ironic that in the beginning of the season, he was being criticized for partying late, basically living life the way someone his age (and with his amount of cash) would do - and now he's given the highest moniker you can get as an active Yankee. Kudos to him, it's about time, IMO.

There were rumors going around that the press conference was to announce that the yanks had traded weaver for Jr. Over his dead body.

There is a god. The yankee's released Acevedo today. That guy pitched pretty good beginning of the year, and then he just completely collapsed. He should of been dropped 2 weeks ago.

He'll sign somewhere else and be good. I wouldn't be surprised if the Sox sign him and make him their closer.

its fun watching joe torre and steinbrenner go back and forth. torre is just like "you want to give me acevedo in the bullpen, i'll puthim out there everyday"

article saying that the yanks are in negotiations to make a move for urbina. I'm not to crazy that this mental case can come to NY and pitch good. I'd rather them make a move for Gabe White if possible or that sauerbeck kid from pittsburgh.

Let boston pick up acevedo, he'll fit right in with there stellar bullpen.

after tonights awfull game and not so great performance by the yankees, I think there will be a big shake up on the way. I say the choices are:
1)Torre- I don't think he'll get fired, but it could happen. It would be the dumbest move by george, but I'm not so concrete in saying it won't happen.

2)Weaver - Pitcher of the future talk is going down the drain with each pitch this guy throws. He looks so lost pitching, and as soon as the fans started booing tonight, the guys shoulders slumped so much I thought he was gonna just start to cry out there. Doesn't appear to be NY tough.

3)Rick Downs - George always fires the hitting coach first. He's the scape goat in a war that nobody ever wins.

Yankees and Mets this weekend. I personally always like watching these games. I don't care if people bitch and moan about it being played out and the excitements over. Its still fun to watch all those Mets fans get there hopes up and then watch as they're team gets killed and there left sitting in a puddle of there own feces. :banana:

he's a fucking ass clown for thinking that was remotely close to a strike. i wanted to throw my television out my window but it was already on the lawn from when i realized howe was bringing him in.

i like the fact that the tieing run and winning run were all walks. benitez is good as long as there is no pressure. a good quality in a closer. i retract all previous support of that loser and for the yanks sake hope that the red sox acquire him.

Benitez would be a hall of famer if not for 4 things:
1)Yankees
2)Braves
3)Bases loaded
4)Walks

I think weaver has great stuff. He's a great pitcher...but he can't pitch for big time ball clubs. Once the pressure is on, he just caves. Pitching against the Devil Rays, he can't get it done. If he was on the Tigers, he'd shut them down. But because of the pressure of pitching for NY, he wilts. I'd be suprised if he is still a yankee by the end of the year.
