Bob Golic
Some of the greatest actors of our time have been ex-football players. OJ Simpson portrayed Nordberg in the Naked Gun series back before he became a murderer. Jim Brown portrayed Fireball in the Running Man and Lyle Alzado the menacing villain in Ernest Goes to Camp. They are able to take what they have learned by tossing about the pigskin and turn it into quality acting. There is no better example of this than Bob Golic.
Bob first captured our hearts (and probably an Emmy although I'll have to check) for his guest appearance on Coach. While Hayden Fox was trying to recruit him to be an assistant coach at Minnesota State, he was hiding a devastating secret: he had cancer. It was a result of years of steroid use and this taught us all about the evils of steroids like nothing else could.
It was in Saved By the Bell: the College Years where Bob really showed us what life was all about: being an RA in college in your late 30's. Whether it was helping Screech get in shape, catching Zack up to no good or making Slater and the gang clean up slime, Bob's character Mike Rogers showed us the way. Sure he had his foiled attempts at picking up the literature professor and had a rough time when Screech moved in with him, but Mike was only human, and this is what made him so compatible. Through all his efforts, Mike Rogers wasn't only a father figure to Zack, Slater and Screech, but to all of us. And in the end, it is through this role of Bob Golic and the accurate portrayal of college life, that I was able to prepare for my first year of school.
I like to refer to that as Saved By The Bell: The Bob Golic Years.
I still don't know who he is - I used to watch Coach but I don't remember that episode, and I never watched Saved by the Bell.
that review gave me a lump in my throat

The football player with a heart of gold.
nope - doesn't look familiar.
No surprise there. All you watch is Freddie Prinze Jr movies.
