if you are just starting you might want to look into the S&P index fund. it is a good place to start. also learn about price to earning ratios before buying individual stock.

a mathematical formula that that figures out the value of a stock based on the stock price in relation the companies earnings. the papers put this number in with the quotes.
if in doubt buy blue chips.
i always think of the story of that woman in yonkers. she was a secretary who earned 33,000 a year. if she noticed a product that she liked or used alot, she bought stock in the company. she died with over 10 million dollars.
if you are going to invest, think long term. it should be money that you are willing leave alone for at least 10 years if not longer. try to never sell.
