we have a tip jar at my subway, but rather than it going directly to our paychecks, my boss takes us to some expensive restaurant and buys us a lot of food like 4 or 5 times year. i dont really like that, and im not really sure its legal, but thats some good free food. i figure that if it went right to our checks, i would get like an extra 75 cents an hour cause the tips would get split between the 3 people working. so i work 52 hours in a month x .75 x 12 months = $468 a year in tips. 5 $30 meals = $150. so yes i am getting semi fucked....but i do get free sandwiches.
Quote:Actually, I was a waitress in a bar at Rutgers. My biggest tip ever was $13 and that was from friends. College kids have no money to tip.i always make my friends go 20% if we have the cash on us, which is most of the time.

Your boss is fucking you and your co-workers BIG TIME!
It's illegal for a Manger to collect and or keep any TIPS. Check around the library and look under the State Larbor laws. Then after you've done your research offer him a deal. If he tell's you to fuck off, sue his ass and throw him out into the street. That'll learn him good.

oh believe me...ive thought about doing that, but what i think is a better idea is to wait until someone is about to quit, then get them to do it.

and as far as tipping the chef first? fuck that, he's making salary, or at least being paid and generally good overtime. plus in my case he's a piece of shit sexual harassment case waiting to happen.
yes, the idea that tipping is for better service is a lovely thing, but fact is, waiting tables and bartending is paid entirely by tips. places like subway i think is a little different, those workers are getting an hourly pay that's more than 2 bucks an hour. i get 25 bucks per shift.......
this better be a case of movie quoting

not in jersey bartenders get a hourly rate and get to keep all tips or spit them.

if you don't like how you're getting paid, maybe you should look into a new line of work. you're not going to support yourself on waiter/waitressing wages unless you're really lucky or have a trust fund or rich parent to support you.

People that work in the food service industry are glorified slaves. That's a career path that leads to a 6ft deep hole in the ground. I imagine that unless you really really love working with food and customers (ie. dumb) you are likely to become a suicide statistic or your brain is going to burn out.

if a waitress is an asshole, i leave a note along with the 20% that says "you didnt really deserve this"
03-05-2004, 06:50 PM
if i get bad service i won't leave 20% i'll leave 15% and tell them that they coulda gotten a lot more. if it's good they'll get the 20 and then some. since most of my friends are or were at one time bartenders and waitresses people tend to get paid very well to serve us. the other night we went to tens and the owner comped our whole check so the waitress got a 100 bucks for bringing us 2 rounds of drinks...
03-05-2004, 06:59 PM
i was lying about the note. sorry
03-05-2004, 07:09 PM
well in that case i'm having a hard time believing the 20% part too.
03-05-2004, 07:51 PM
no no...thats true
03-05-2004, 08:30 PM
i leave 20% cause im too lazy to calculate 15%. i just move the decimal up 1 point and double it, thats my tip. i leave 20% if they're good or bad.
