I think i'm being baited by the legendary Kid A. Ok I'll play.
If I would have bought the pair I got today two days ago instead of the pair I bought two days ago I would have paid the same amount I paid two days ago, due to the two-for sale or whatever it was they had two days ago but was not going on today. It wasn't about the money, it's the principle. And maybe 400 isn't a lot to warrant me to bitch about it and make a stink but I made it anyway. I was in complete asshole mode the second they told me I had to pay more money, after spending two hours of my life shopping in their shitty store thinking i'll be good for another year or two, only to have to go back there two days later and deal with these department store policy spouting zombies. I wanted those two cunts to have to sit there and grin and try to defend themselves, their position and their store against an obvious superior in terms of both intellect and brawn, one eye on me, the other looking anxiously below the counter for the location of that security alarm button, sweat beading on their brow. I wanted them to look into my eyes and know that I could have beat them both to death with those shoes and walked out with them and four more just like them. That's my revenge! He's your fucking 7 bucks! Here's you fucking 7 fucking bucks! Now stop peddling trash and you won't have to deal with jerkoffs like me!1

Now that you've explained (maybe I missed this point before) that the shoes were the same price the day you bought them, I kind of agree with you. I don't agree with how you handled the situation, but I do agree you should have gotten an even exchange.
Next time something like this happens, you should tear up the seven dollars and throw it at the clerk overhand.
Then collect your receipt and your merchandise and skip out of the store whistling.
