The fact that they have no manufacturing or research facilities, blah blah blah, that is the destructive technology we were talking about.
I don't understand the point you are trying to make.
I was in the process of writing a long memo clarifying what destructive technology means and why HP et al didn't capitalize.

If HP had seen the distruptive technology arising, they could have cut Dell off.
That's the point.
Not saying that any of them lost money because of it.
FYI. Dell vs HP, Compaq, IBM is the go to example of disruptive technologies per the Harvard prof who coined the phrase.

yes, I'm sure that HP would have made less money selling the entire computer to consumers than selling components to Dell.
