- Arpikarhu - 03-16-2003 you never said you tried it manually. you just said it stopped working. since this is a scheduled task for most of the free world.....ugh, never mind. sorry i got involved. sorry i called you dumb. i apologize for my part in this whole matter. good luck. - Sweet Angel - 03-16-2003 Quote:Why/how will that work if it won't work when I do it manually? It used to work I did say I used to do it manually...see? I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just asking for an explanation of why. While I'm at it, on my old PC (running XP), when I would search for temp internet files, I would get a lot. When I searched my temp files through Windows Explorer I would get a lot. On the new PC, there are never any temp files when I go through Windows Explorer, and when I do a search for *.tmp, I end up with maybe 10. Why is this? - Arpikarhu - 03-16-2003 Hmmm...I dunno. Got any suggestions? - Goatweed - 03-16-2003 Sweet, how did you try to do run disk cleanup - through the Start--->Programs--->, etc? menus? - Sweet Angel - 03-16-2003 Yes, start -> programs -> accessories -> system tools -> disk cleanup. Actually, I have it pinned to my Start menu, so I don't do all that. That wouldn't have anything to do with it, would it? I get the box the pops up that says: "Select Drive". I select "C". Then I get the box that says "Disk cleanup is calculating how much space you will be able to free on C. This may take a few minutes to compute." At the bottom of the box it says "Compress old files" I let it sit the other day for almost 15 minutes and it didn't do a Damn thing. The PC wasn't even thinking.... - Arpikarhu - 03-16-2003 1. put your computer back in the box 2. return it 3. sit on couch 4. turn on tv 5. let your mind wander to the pretty picture on the magic box. - Goatweed - 03-16-2003 try killing everthing that starts up at boot - basically do a CTRL-ALT-DEL and kill everything but EXPLORER and SYSTRAY. Then try running it. If that doesn't work, I would guess the app got corrupted somehow, and you can either reinstall Windows or buy Norton's Systemworks and use their diskcleanup tools (which work better IMO). Try killing everything forst, something running may be preventing it from working. - onehung - 03-16-2003 Quote:This may take a few minutes to compute." At the bottom of the box it says "Compress old files"Both of mine do the same thing. I thought it was messed up also, but, eventually it kicks in and starts...Norton system works cuts all that bullshit out of the way :thumbs-up: - Sweet Angel - 03-16-2003 I'll try. Thanks. - DGW - 03-16-2003 Quote:i cant make it any plainer, you are dumb. that is the problem.don't yah just love the lil bastard - Sweet Angel - 03-16-2003 Quote:don't yah just love the lil bastard Almost as much as I love the winter. - Keyser Soze - 03-16-2003 can't she uninstall and then reinstall just the disk cleanup utility? i think under add/remove programs and in the windows setup section. maybe that will uncorrupt it. - Sweet Angel - 03-16-2003 Okay, I just looked at my startup files (msconfig -> startup). There is no explorer and no systray. Here's what it has: server rundll32 pop3trap webtrapnt sentry CMEsys navapw32 IAMAPP save InkMonitor topMoxie Fmempro msmsgs weather Adobe gamma loader.exe Billminder Create a card Date Manager Epson status monitor Exif Launcher Gstartup Precision Time Quicken Startup Realtime Monitor VAIO action set up WinZip Quick Pick I know you said to control-alt-delete, but when I do that, the only thing that comes up under applications is IB::Toic: ![]() The stupid computer is only about 2 months old. :-( - Arpikarhu - 03-16-2003 give me your IP address. i will fix it for you - Luna - 03-16-2003 Quote:Okay, I just looked at my startup files (msconfig -> startup). There is no explorer and no systray.Aren't you in some bigass trouble? :clueless: - Sweet Angel - 03-16-2003 That's what I'm thinkin'. ![]() - Luna - 03-16-2003 When you ran msconfig. and got rid of stuff from the task bar did you get rid of those two things? - Sweet Angel - 03-16-2003 Nope. The few things I disabled I was SURE were unimportant (date minder, ink monitor, etc). I know enough not to get rid of stuff like that. I ended up enabling everything again anyway though. - Luna - 03-16-2003 Have you re-booted since you've tried doing this the first time? - Sweet Angel - 03-16-2003 Yes, yes I have. And I tried the other suggestion of just letting it go and eventually it'll kick in. I let it sit there for 50 minutes and nothing. I didn't have these problems with my old slow PC. |
