OK, you have a point. Simple "yeah, you're right" and "no, you're wrong" replies are meaningless and show no effort. But I'd like to see 20 guitarists better than Eddie Van Halen...not that I disagree.

I'd say all these guys come from bands where the whole is greater than the sum of their parts. With the possible exception of Allman, I don't see anyone here who really stands out as a great guitarist - they're all very good, I just don't see them on a level equal to or greater than that of Eddie Van Halen. Maybe I just rate him higher than you...I don't know.

Off the top of my head, I'd add Satriani, Brian May, Alex Lifeson, John Petrucci, Peter Lindgren, and Lead Belly to the "better than Eddie" list...

I keep hearing this Malmsteen is emotionless argument, you really have to see him in concert before saying it, I saw one of his shows, and his performance was very powerful and emotional, because he didn't just play a song, he'd improvise, he'd make one part longer because the crowd was feeling it. I'd agree that on records he sounds rather bland, but once you see him live that all changes

I'd also add Vai to the list

You're probably right. I actually thought the same thing about Satriani - that he was emotionless and robotic - before seeing him in concert. I'd definitely jump at the chance to see Malmsteen live, anyone who screams "You have unleashed the fury!" to an old woman in an airplane is ok in my book.

It's too bad he spends most of his time in Japan, the main problem is he keeps attaching himself to crappy musicians. When he works with an orchestra it's simply amazing, but the rest of the time he is teaming up with some 80s rejects, it's awful.

I think I'd disappointed if I saw Malmsteen live and it wasn't all cheesy 80's style music with the awful vocals, singin Queen Is In Love like ripped acid washed jeans and band jackets and mullets under a do-rag are back in style. Though the thought of Malmsteen with an orchestra is pretty sweet as well.

A couple more very good, lesser known guitarists: Caspar Brötzmann, Steve Morse, Robert Fripp, Eric Johnson. Mark Knopfler also deserves mention, and Jerry Garcia is pretty Damn underrated considering how well known he is, he never seems to get any recognition as a great guitarist, which I definitely think he was.

Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E flat minor LIVE might be one of the best albums I own, it's Yngwie with the New Japan Philharmonic.

Also if you haven't, download some of the videos off the net, his so-called "guitar lessons" are priceless.

edit: You know what I always found scary about Malmsteen's technique? Unlike other thrashers, his notes don't flow together, you can hear each single note played clearly. And you have to see his signature guitar, the scalloped fretboard is just so fucking cool.

That's one album or two? Either way, I'll check it out.

And yeah, I've heard about his "guitar lessons", never had a chance to see them. With my dialup, if I start downloading now, I might have it by April...

That's true. I think the best example of this that I can think of offhand would be the Live In Leningrad CD, where he breaks into that hyperfast version of Beethoven's 5th, and each note is distinct even though he's running through about 5 bars a second...or so it seems. Like I said, technically, I can't think of too many that are better. And I can't think of anyone who plays faster. Damn, now I wanna hear that live CD you mentioned...

Yeah, that is pretty sweet...if I had that, I might even learn to play past the basic Nirvana songs and subpar Stairway that are all my feeble ability allows so far.

I was gonna add him but I didn't think many people would know him. He is definetly a great talent and a favorite of almost every musician from clapton to mccartney.
