Pavlovian conditioning is often considered to be involuntary. The organism has little control over the response, in that the environment elicits the behavior from the organism. Operant behavior involves voluntary behavior that is emitted by the organism is controlled by its consequences (hence the term consequated). Another way of looking at this difference is to look at the relationship between behavior and the environment. In Pavlovian conditioning, the relationship is stimulus-response (SR), but in operant it is response-stimulus (RS). Whether responses occur in the future depend upon the nature of the contingency. If it makes life better for the organism, it will likely occur again in the future (reinforcement), and if it makes life worse, it will likely not occur again in the future (punishment).

A dolphin tried to rape a 28-year-old Norwegian swimmer who had been gambolling with it off the south coast of Norway, the newspaper Verdens Gang reported Tuesday.
The animal, which had been circling around the swimmer, suddenly stuck its penis between his leg and his bathing costume before the man managed to free himself and escape back aboard his nearby boat.
"At first I thought it was pushing me with its flipper but dolphins don't have flippers beneath their bellies," the unidentified swimmer explained.
Another swimmer who witnessed the scene from the boat told the newspaper he had to ward off similar advances from the dolphin a few minutes earlier. "He tried his luck with me but I was protected by my waterproof suit," that swimmer said.

Well, I don't care if a dog, cat or less frequently a dolphin is male or female when I pet it. But I MUCH prefer petting a female human than a male. Like us with dolphins/dogs/cats, a dolphin probably doesn't distinguish gender in humans.

In the early stages of twentieth century behaviorism, no differentiation was made between what we now refer to as Pavlovian (or, in Skinner's terminology, respondent) conditioning, and instrumental (or, operant) conditioning. While the differences at first blush seem profound, we will eventually see that Pavlovian and operant are two halves of an integrated view of learned behavior--Pavlovian by itself isn't of much value--it sets us up (i.e.--provides the motivation) to act, and the action is the operant part of our behavior. By the same token, operant doesn't operate in a vacuum--we need to be motivated to act.
