Um, most bands have their own publishing companies to hold their rights and file with ASCAP and BMI...like Dream Theater has Ytse Jams, Inc., Foo Fighters have Living Under a Rock Music, all wacky names you can find in your liner notes if you didn't dl all the music... over time however, they can lose their rights to their intellectual property, but that's what artists are fighting the record industry for now

I support the bands I enjoy by buying their swag
Anyway, the indies don't work the same way the majors do....most of the time I can buy the album directly from the artist

I agree with Spit, unless you have some insight into the music business, you're talking out of your ass here. Bands make more than you think off each CD. Do they make all of it? hell fucking no. Do they make what they deserve? hell fucking no. But they are making money. Trust me on that.

spit, while you make a valid point about indies, I really don't listen to too much indy music. I am also not obsessed with who makes the music, or what label it's on. I just enjoy the music. If an artist really wants to make money, they should look to someone else.

Besides, I actually prefer old skool albums over CDs, theres something romantic about a record player.

Yeah, and some people have a lifestyle that doesn't allow them to waste money on every new cd that comes out to listen to the one good song on it. Also, people that argue against downloading music usually don't know how to do it properly anyway. So, can you blame them for not knowing how to make a decent cd cover easily?

Sorry man, we'll just have to disagree on this one. I feel that there are too many companies in this world that screw millions of people everyday. If the Internet is my chance to screw them... I'm doing it.

Who owns the rights to all The Beatles music? huh?.... anyone???, well, It's not Ringo or Paul...

I know (for a fact) that most bands make 90% of their money from merchandise & touring, not from record sales. Therefore, Fuck Lars Ulrich & anybody else who thinks like he does... I bought Metallica's "No Life 'Til Leather" demo tape, long before they got signed to Megaforce Records, and even longer before they moved to Electra... and if it weren't for people like me, who by making copies of the tape & giving them to my friends who in-turn made copies for their friends, I can almost promise you, that Metallica would not be where they are today. I've spent my CA$H on many concerts and merchandise over the years, but with the shit that Lars stirred up with Napster (and the like) destroyed a major of vein of the music scene of "Music for the people" or "We just want to make music for ourselves" ...now, they make "music for people TO BUY!!!"

That being said, I still support independent/local artists, but I have an incredibly hard time getting myself to pay for any album/cd/whatever from the Major Music Companies... In my humble opinion, there is no reason for anyone (record co. type person) that did not take an active part in the writing or recording of any music to be allowed to profit from it... I understand that it sometimes costs thousands of $$'s to record an album, but that money is usually made back within the first printing by Major Labels... the rest of the money made is ALL profit for Labels... I guess they need to re-coup all the losses from all those "suck-ass" bands the flood the market with... When the Major Music Industry starts putting out "Quality" records instead of "Quantity" records, then maybe I'll start paying for those records.... until then, I'll pillage the internet!!!

It pisses me off that people are calling artists like Sheryl Crow and Don Henley spoiled brats for starting that artists' rights group (with their own pocket money) They're trying to protect the rights to stuff that they wrote/performed themselves, that the record companies can just take away when the contract is over. That is fucked up! Rights to intellectual property is a major issue right now...

hey spit, you ever wonder why indy bands are indy? ya think it's because of their scary talent?

even the worst rapper can sell enough records on his own label that the big boys will beg at his feet for the distribution rights. how come none do for the indy groups? you'll probably say being popular doesn't make the music good. but, being indydoesn't make it eclectic either.

if the music is truly good, the people will like it, and it will spread. not through tape/cd sales, but rather through people enjoying it and passing it on to their friends. think about the dead, they probably moved more bootleg tapes than any band that ever existed. they also made a fucking mint on tour, and enjoyed having some of the most loyal (although questionable) fans.

you want to support indy music, spread it around, if it's good, it'll stick. if not, it'll stay indy and you can continue to think that you are eccentric because you listen to shit music that nobody else has heard of.

I (think) I agree with you Spit... I think it's fucked that so many artists have no control over music that they wrote...

Willie Nelson has written hundreds, probably thousands of songs throughout his career... and now he has to get permission to re-record (or even play live) many of those songs that he wrote, let alone the fact that whenever someone records a song that Willie wrote, he makes a small percent (of a percentage) if anything, while the people who basically robbed him of his music make money hand over fist...

i think its a little presumptious to say that spitfire is trying to be 'eccentric' by listening to independent music. maybe the kind of music she enjoys just happens to be created by independent artists. on the flipside, don't discount an artist just because they become successful and 'commercial'

just because millions of people suddenly dig the music you did when they only had a handful of fans doesnt make it bad music.

the politics of music makes me sick. i listen to the music that moves me regardless of the bullshit surrounding it.

While I KNOW you've seen the music business first hand Moron, you can't say that ALL bands make $1 or less. Of course none of them are making all their money on their album sales. But theres some bands that make good damn money from it.
