Almost Traded
Feb 18 - The Knicks and Trail Blazers had a deal in place that would've sent David Lee, Penny Hardaway and his expiring contract, plus a first-round pick to Portland for Ruben Patterson and Theo Ratliff, according to a person with knowledge of the discussions. The stumbling block that ultimately caused Thomas to nix the deal was that Portland wanted the pick the Knicks got from Denver via Toronto in the Antonio Davis trade. That pick wound up being the 20th overall, which the Knicks used to select Renaldo Balkman. Thomas took a pass and instead traded Hardaway and Trevor Ariza to Orlando for Steve Francis. -- Newsday
