There was a story a while back that Exxon, Mobil, Shell and other US oil companies have bought the patent and production rights to alternate fuel types with the sole intention of never producing them. Why? Why would you shoot your cow when you can milk it forever.

I heard the same thing, its because they want to own the patents so they don't go belly up when the oil really does run out...it's funny that Bill Gates gets taken to court for having a monopoly over the software industry but nothing happens to oil owners...
