its verizon that puts in the software. all the other companies use java, but verizon has their own service called brew. other companies usually charge you for kb downloaded, but verizon doesn't, so you can set it up to get on the internet without there service and only use air time minutes (which i did, and goatweed if you want i can tell you how to do that too. its not great but its good for checking a sports score)

edit - and galt, you do have the phone where you can email midi files to yourself and save it as a ringtone. just send an email to your#@vtext.com and attach it as an attachment. when you recieve the text message there should be an option to let you save it
