When and how did you start listening? - cassierae - 06-19-2008

Is there already a thread for this?!

ANYWAY...When did everyone start listening and what do you remember about that moment? For me, I had known what the FBHW show was but I thought it sounded lame and whenever I saw the billboards or ad's I always thought, "WTF is Free beer? And Hot wings? Do they give away free beer and hot wings at events?" I didn't get it. I started working at 5am back in March. I bought a new phone that has a radio built into it so I listened to the radio on my headphones. I would always listen to the cheesy "The River" Or something, or Spuds in the Morning...until one day I heard some guys talking and they were making Joe, who was on vacation and trying to sleep after partying, go out onto the beach and try to pick up chicks. I laughed so hard and from that day on I tried to listen everyday and now I can't go without listening! Sometimes I think my co-workers think i'm crazy...sometimes they'll be talking to me or helping me clean and i'll just bust out laughing and feel stupid. :-)

When and how did you start listening? - hotzester - 06-19-2008

Nooo, that was Benercrombie picking up chicks. One of the funniest intern moments ever!

When and how did you start listening? - cassierae - 06-19-2008

Oooh, was it?! See, I knew nothing back then! I thought it was Joe doing a special Joe stunt.

When and how did you start listening? - hotzester - 06-19-2008

Nope, that was Ben. He was on spring break, and he'd been partying the night before. It's one of the few instances I can recall where I actually felt the "uncomfortable" over the radio. HILARIOUS!

When and how did you start listening? - Mark the Valet - 06-19-2008

I used to listen to Bob and Tom but I got fed up with them. I didn't understand why they'd laugh so hysterically at things that were not remotely funny.

So I started listening to other radio personalities. I prefer talk shows, so I'd cruise the talk station and listen to Dave Ramsey and lots of over the top conservative talking heads...none were filling that void.

Then something magical happened. I stumbled upon Freebeer and Hotwings a little over a year ago (I'd say April of 07) and I haven't looked back since.

94.5 used to have Howard Stern but when he went to XM i started with 97.9 and been there ever sense.

When and how did you start listening? - mudroomdonna - 06-19-2008

I'm in Albany...When Howard Stern went off the air, they replaced it with FB+HW.

The first bit I heard was around Christmas in I guess 2005? Joe had an empty Xbox box and left it in a shopping cart in a Wal Mart parking lot...They were waiting to see what people would do.

When and how did you start listening? - lokizilla - 06-19-2008

My husband talked me into listening. After him nagging for a year, I finally gave in about a month ago. Got to say I really like personality of the show. Feels like the people I usually spend time with.

When and how did you start listening? - hotzester - 06-19-2008

To answer the question, I very distinctly remember the moment I started taking an interest in the show more than just background noise. It was Dude Shadoway's interview with Fabio - When Fabio said "Are you talking about yak butter?" I damn near rolled my truck.

When and how did you start listening? - dman99 - 06-19-2008

I am a prime example of the way they talk about people that don't like the show at first. I thought it was a stupid name and that it was gonna suck. My friends all liked it and then I caught a "best of" on a Saturday morning and I have been listening ever since.

When and how did you start listening? - turkeyface - 06-19-2008

Been listening since they started in Grand Rapids... I hated them for about 2 weeks then I became retarded and haven't stopped laughing since.

When and how did you start listening? - Philly Mike - 06-19-2008

it was like 2002 or 2003 I listened to Bob and Tom in the morning on my way home from 3rd shift, next thing i know one morning on my way home i hear some stupid named show taking away the bob and tom i listened to and thought to myself "what is this crap"
it took a while, i started to like them, now i have to go out of my way because the station they started on here (97.5 formerly 94.5 the hawk) is now a crappy smooth jazz station

When and how did you start listening? - Allyson - 06-19-2008

I don't even remember how I got into FBHW - it was about 6 years ago and I was 15 or so at the time. I think I just had my classic rock station on one morning and heard them talking. Love at first listen.

When and how did you start listening? - ratrad - 06-19-2008

I started listening last summer (2007) and hated it. However, it was better than the other horrible stations in St. Cloud. Also, I could not get the Minneapolis stations on my essy car radio. So, I listened for a couple minutes on the way to my internship and thought "these guys blow".

Then I started my job in Minneapolis and my car was broke down so I was driving my GF's car. So, I would flip through the Minneapolis stations and I could not stand KQRS (They are everything that FBHW make fun of in radio). So when the one station I somewhat like was in commercials or music, I had to listen to the stupid FBHW show.

I started saying "Ok, they have some humorous bits". THEN, Benercrombie spelled "Greg" like "Grieg" and they gave him hell and left him sitting in the studio to take over the show (I GUARANTEE THAT SOMEONE SPELLS THEIR NAME THAT WAY!!!). I had to pull my car over and I was laughing so hard I cried.

From then on I podcast every show and have not missed a show. When I'm on the bus to work, everyone is half asleep and I am busting out laughing and everyone just stares at me. Sometimes I have to stop the segments so I can stop laughing.

I can never call and I never email them, because I am usually at least a half a day behind. Someday I hope to play one of the games.

I live in South Carolina and a radio station called 96 wave was struggling with there morning show so they put FBHW on, I loved the show from the start and they always make me laugh. A few months later the radio station crashed and burned and changed formats to oldies and 80's crap rock and so I was left high and dry...... But I got a new job working on a computer so I have the internet, so now all I do is surf porn and FBHW's it until 10

Hey, my dad recently moved from the Grand Rapids area to Myrtle Beach. He is in radio and got a job there on the radio where they play Free Beer and Hot Wings. I tried explaining to him my love for the show, he seemed real uninterested in it and didn't believe me that they are in Grand Rapids. Anyway, if you listen to that station and hear Dale Ray on the radio, that's my dad who doesn't understand my love for FBHW.

When and how did you start listening? - peekoos - 06-19-2008

As bad as I hate to admit it, I used to listen to Bob & Tom every now and then. They really annoyed the piss out of me (which is why I would usually listen to cds on my commute instead), but on those days in which I wasn't in the mood for music I'd turn it over to B&T. Geez, were they awful! Anyway, on a magical day in November of 2006, Bob & Tom were GONE from that station . . . and replaced with FBHW. I was skeptical at first b/c I hadn't heard a decent morning show since I lived near Memphis (Wake-up Crew at Rock 103 was pretty good, and so were Drake & Zeke if you're familiar with them.) It only took one morning to convince me I would no longer need cds in the morning - they were awesome!!! Been a loyal listener ever since.

Side note - I got Sirius satellite radio for Christmas 2006, and even though I have access to Howard Stern in the mornings (btw, he's on Sirius, not XM), I still choose to listen to FBHW! I catch Howard on the replays on my lunch break, and I listen to Bubba The Love Sponge on my drive home. FBHW are the BEST thing on terrestrial radio!!!

When and how did you start listening? - sweetmom - 06-19-2008

I started listening to the What can Joe do stunuts and then one day I just switched from my regular station. Its been 2 years since I did that and I am so glad that I did.

When and how did you start listening? - mcnastie - 06-19-2008

I went to Sirius when Howard did, when my wife went out of town and took the satelite radio with her I flipped through the channels and found FBHW.

When and how did you start listening? - toddlerfundler - 06-19-2008

At the very beginning in GR they advertised for Free beer and hot wings in the mornings" i actually fell for it and tuned in the first day to see if they were giving stuff away. Back then they actually played music and i remember calling in and bitching because my drive 6:30-7:00 was a music segment and i wanted to hear talk not rock. Back thn you could always get though on the phone and they anwsered in studio so Zane or HW would pick up and ask what was up. I kinda miss the local touch when it was just GR but they have definitly perfected the art and gotten better since then.. Oh yeah Zane and HW used to do the Joe stunts, now they're too good for it.

When and how did you start listening? - mayorofawesometown - 06-19-2008

I've been listening since they showed up in GR. I used to listen to the guys that were here before them but in comparison they sucked. FB&HW 4ever.

Mud Room Donna Wrote:I'm in Albany...When Howard Stern went off the air, they replaced it with FB+HW.

Pretty much the same for me. I wasn't a Stern fan and most of the other morning shows were blah, when FB+HW were added, I listened being the good employee I am and thought they were different in a GOOD way. Been listening ever since. They have restored my faith in morning radio.

When and how did you start listening? - grevee - 06-19-2008

I used to listen to Stern before he left for Sirius, then I switched to listening to B&T on-line until they started charging you to listen. I liked some of their stuff, mostly the songs, not the idiotic laughter at everything. I stumbled across FB&HW over 4 years ago when I got a new job and had a 45 minute drive and was hooked. That was pre-Joe, back when the guys did stunts; they have to bring that back. Some of the Joe stuff is getting a little old.

When and how did you start listening? - buickluver - 06-19-2008

l listen to q103 and stern went off the air and these guys came on and i figured what the hell ill listen and ive been a loyal listener since. ill run out of my door to my car sometimes so i dont miss anything. one day i was in such a big rush, i slipped on ice on my steps and fell on my ass and ate it pretty hard!!!!!!!!

When and how did you start listening? - danno - 06-19-2008

I listed to the morning show that was on before FB&HW here in GR, it was called the S&M show. I was way bummed when it was replaced with these guys, definately didn't like them at first. But I've gotten used to them, and love them now. None of the other local shows can compare!

When and how did you start listening? - bobfredericks - 06-19-2008

My brother in law told me about them 3 years ago and ever since I started listening to them I have slowly become an avid listener.

When and how did you start listening? - hotzester - 06-19-2008

For those of you who are also in the Albany market - was there a period of a couple weeks between Howard's departure and FBHW's arrival? I swear I heard another show in there somewhere, but for a very, very brief time.

When and how did you start listening? - kzootube - 06-19-2008

I was sitting outside a restaurant in my car, waiting for a friend to join me for breakfast, listening to the lame-ass morning show on 107.7 in Kalamazoo... can't believe I used to listen to that. Commercials came on so I started flipping around on the radio...came to 97.9 and heard FBHW talking about some lady in front of them in line at the grocery store who wrote a check and took forever... it was f-ing hillarious! Loved it ever since!

When and how did you start listening? - vtrick - 06-19-2008

A friend of mine told me about FBHW about a year ago 2007. I thought the name sucked, sorry, but as soon as I tuned in I didn't stop laughing for weeks. My local station 101.5 The Fox has a sister station in NH called Q106 and used to simulcast on that station too, but they went back to Imus, the loser. So I did what any FBHW listener should do, I threatned the station with writing letters to advertisers to pull their ad budget from that station if they did not return to FBHW show. So far no reply and I have yet to write a letter. What is nice ( I drive a work van in the morning) I can pickup Q103 in ALBANY NY sometimes, so at least I can listen more than just in my home station area!

When and how did you start listening? - plumpenut - 06-19-2008

I started listening when they first came on the air in september. I could never remember their name at first. I used to call them the free beer and pizza show. I thought they were ok at first and have stuck with them. They are definitly different than KQ (which is the type of station they have made fun of in the past). Now my wife and I are loyal listeners.

When and how did you start listening? - turf - 06-19-2008

i started listening to FB&HW when they first came to nashville in november 2006. i was an avid listener of "bob & tom" at the time and was shocked to hear new voices coming out the radio. i remember thinking, "i hate these guys based on their names alone" and where had the bob & tom show moved to. after scanning the radio for a couple of minutes, i flipped back to 102.9 the buzz and the show quickly grew on me. a few months later when "bob & tom" returned to nashville's air waves, i would occasionally flip over to other station while FB&HQ were in a commercial break but i grew tired of their fake laughter.

When and how did you start listening? - myself - 06-19-2008

I originally listened to Bon and Tom on 102.9 the Buzz in lavergne, they got replaced by FBHW and I didnt know whch station Bob and Tom moved to. so I gave Free Beer and Hotwings a chance, I now listen to them instead.

When and how did you start listening? - cadjockey - 06-20-2008

I started listening about 8 months ago on 104.7 in Maine. Just had the radio on one morning and these 2 guys were talking about stuff that I relate to. I found out they are my age and they talk about stuff I like. Making fun of douchebags is a specialty.

I also listen to Glenn Beck, he has more in depth political and pop culture humor. He makes fun of douchebags too.

I wish I was awake for the whole FBHW show, but I usually only catch an hour or so. I don't eally feel like waking up at 5am.

When and how did you start listening? - holehead - 06-20-2008

An old girlfriend of mine moved to nashville and liked the show enough that she called me and told me about it and I have podcast every day since.

When and how did you start listening? - smedley - 06-20-2008

I started listening in when they came to GR, (2005?) so I vaguely remember the pre Joe stunts. The show has gotten better and better.

When and how did you start listening? - duffman - 06-20-2008

I started when Howard Stern left Albany. Took about a week of flipping between this and other local stations before I got used to their over exaggerated laughter and was able to tolerate "what hot wings thinks" enough to listen full every morning.

When and how did you start listening? - johnny - 06-20-2008

I started back in October I guess. I just moved to Albany and was on my way to my first day of work. I was just flipping through the stations and heard Zane ranting about something (I forget what). I've listened everyday since. I guess I need to thank Zane! Thanks man!

When and how did you start listening? - Howie Feltersnatch - 06-20-2008

I was flipping through West Michigan morning shows (7 in the area or so) and came across GRD right when Zane was talking about how he often pushes brown in the morning and then promptly jumps into the shower without wiping....it was hillarious

When and how did you start listening? - mtab - 06-20-2008

Had listened to those boners Ron & Don on KLQ in Grand Rapids until one day they were just gone and down in Louisianna or something. Flipped it over to FB&HW since they were on the air in GR since day 1.

When and how did you start listening? - dino - 06-20-2008

I moved to the Detroit area the summer of '04 and became a loyal listener to Drew and Mike. Hilarious show. Fast forward 2 years later I moved back to GR and would still stream Drew and Mike on-line. Drew's girlfriend came down with cancer fall of 2007 and he took some time off to take care of her and the show just wasn't the same so I started searching for new morning entertainment at work and started listening to FB&HW and have been hooked ever since.

Come to find out Drew is Joe's uncle and Zane was the one who filled in for Drew the last time he took an extended leave for his back issues. I about shit myself laughing when Zane brought up him filling in and his humble exodus. That really was "A joke 10 years in the making!"

If Drew makes an appearance on the proposed "Family Feud" segment like Joe hoped that will be awesome radio!
