Hi everyone,

I have spent the last year trying to not be a forum Nazi. I think I've done a relatively good job of it but have made some mistakes in the past. It troubles me when I have to put on the big bad admin hat but I have to do it in this case.

A concern was brought to my attention regarding the public posting of chat transcripts. My thought was that what was posted on the forum was for public consumption and what is "said" in a chat is just for the sake of conversation.

It is with a heavy heart that I would ask everyone to not publicly post chat transcripts/screenshots/etc. anymore. I know you all are trying to increase traffic to the chat and that is appreciated but at the same time it can be seen as a deterrent to participate in the chat.

The board is for public posting. The chat is for intimate discussion and screwing around in a context that is not a permanent record.

I'll third that, and even tho I haven't been in chat I personally think that if people only post chat stuff said by others that have stated they do not care if what they say in chat is posted on the forum then it should be ok. If they have not said either way then it should not be posted here for all to see.

I had never thought about it like that, but that does make perfect sense. A post is documented as permanent record, reviewable by any member at any given time assuming the account is in good standing.

The chat however, is not a permanent record and as such the user is right to assume that what gets posted in there will be deleted after the users all log out. By posting the transcript in a thread here, it makes it a permanent record and is thus violating the trust of the users believing it to be temporary.

Wayyyyyyy back around 1998 or so when I first started posting on message boards and chat rooms and learned how to use the copy and paste, I knew that everything I said could possibly be seen by anyone at anytime. Therefore I knew that I shouldn't say something that I didn't want anyone or everyone else to see.

If someone says something particularly funny, profound, stupid or potentially embarassing I think that show code demands that it be posted for all the forum to see.


For example if a certain board member professed his or her love for say... Len O'Kelly then I for one would love to see that little tidbit posted on the board, especially if I wasn't in the chat at the time.

Rather than shut down the posting of transcripts because someone thinks the chat room should be private, why don't you tell them it's not? They seem to be in the minority. You're making a relatively large rule change for what seems like the grumblings (but maybe is not) of one person. I understand you're in a tough position, just thought I would input.

Well I believe it should be open for people to be able to post chat transcripts here, but Biff seems to have his reasons beyond what we can see. As annoying of a rule it is it doesn't matter because Biff is the man who set this up and he gets final say. I respect his decision, I just felt I had something to say and I said it. I was actually surprised that others followed the reasoning of my rant, and we all have the right to do so. As I said though Biff has his reasons apparently and I disagree with it but I respect it.

If you ever expect privacy in a chat room, you're poorly mistaken. Anything on the net is public, unless it's something private, that only you have access to. But that could be hacked so, I expect no privacy in the chat.
