Oh yeah and don't forget about this. Right now the records for both teams stand as this, Pitt- 16-10-4 36 points Detroit 20-5-4 44 points. +/- for Pitt +13 Detroit +15 and that's with less than stellar goaltending. Eat it Pittsburgh, if it weren't for Lemieux you wouldn't even have a team anymore. He single handedly kept the penguins in pittsburgh. You won't see the Red Wings ever having rumors of leaving Detroit.
hahahah ur a bitch.. we'll see in the playoffs im pretty sure they beat the wings in the ghetto.. i mean detroit this year
Yeah, in overtime and only because Ozzie played a terrible game and gave up 3 goals in the 3rd period. Keep dreaming though if you think that the Pens will win the cup this year. You guys don't have the goalies to win the cup. Maybe if you had a goalie that has 4 rings on his hands like Ozzie does then you could have a chance but you don't. Penguins still suck balls.

The Pens win the cup? Are you talking about the Pittsburgh, if the season ended today, we wouldn't make the playoffs, Penguins? Just want to make sure we are talking about the same team before I make fun of you.

The difference between Detroit fans, and fans from the state of Pennsylvania, is that we don't brag about bad or average teams. We know when are teams are bad. That is why we are talking about Hockey, not football. This is also why you shouldn't be talking about hockey. Not only did your team lose the Stanley Cup, but you lost it to us. Do you get into fights, get your @$$ kicked, and as you are being loaded into the whambulance, yell out, "you're a pussy, I'll kick your ass!!?!?" Yes, you have a decent hockey team, with a whiny coach, and a over-rated captain. You're not there yet. When the Wings start sucking, or when the Pens start actually winning something worth while, then you can talk. Until then, just sit back and take notes. (and respect the champs, like every other self respecting fan, player, and coach do in hockey)

To add to that. The Red Wings have made it to the playoffs 17 years in a row. 17! That goes all the way back to 1991. No team in ANY sport has made it to the playoffs that many years in a row ever. Not even the Yankees. The Wings also show no signs of letting up on that streak either. Pittsburgh got their team by sucking and getting a good draft pick. The Red Wings get their teams by having a good owner who's willing to spend the money, build up a legacy, and then by having the best GM in all of sports. The man who can draft players like Datsyuk and Zetterberg in the 5th and 6th round and have them turn out to be 2 of the best players ever. They didn't go out and find some kid that everybody and their mother has heard of who was really good. As long as Ilitch owns the team and Holland is GM you will see the Wings in the playoffs.

Yeah the mid ice goals suck. Everybody gives them up though. Lidstrom's scored twice from mid ice. Yeah it's embarrassing. Having a good D helps. I know. I was a goalie all throughout high school. My freshman year our D sucked and I'd face 30 shots in a period and I'd let in 10. My Senior year our D was awesome and I would get maybe 30 shots a game and I'd let in 1 or 2. There's no doubt that D makes a difference. But Ozzie has made a name for himself as a good goaltender. He won't be a first ballot HOFer. But he should make it eventually. He's not Brodeur, Nabokov, Roy, etc. He'll never be of that caliber, but he's certainly good enough to make it into the HOF.
By the way, I'm watching the wings shut out the Blue Jackets right now and Datsuyk's soccer pass up to Zetterberg for the open net goal is hilarious. Great game by Conks too. I think with all of Pittsburgh's goalie (and winning) struggles lately they may be missing him greatly.

Yes it is. This is how I know this. I was wrong.
Bang! Wrote:I cant help I'm the only one that sees all the mid ice goals and '01 Playoff series vs LA via osgood eff ups.
So, a few bad goals 8 yeas ago makes him a horrible goalie??
Bang! Wrote:If you don't see the fact that the Wing's D won the cup for them last year then you know little about hockey.
As I have already stated, you can have the best D in the NHL, but if your goalie sucks, and has like a .800 save percentage, you will not win. Ozzie is one of the better goalies in the NHL. Not the best, bar far, but is way better than the average goalie.
... and I'm pretty sure I know just as much, if not more, about hockey than a lot of so called "fans" that sit back and say that the reigning Stanley Cup Champion goalie is terrible.
p.s. I'm done with this conversation. It's painfully obvious that you're not going to defend your side of the conversation with facts. You're like that kid that knows no facts, but thinks he will win the discussion by interrupting, and yelling louder than everyone else.

Ozzie is a for lack of a better term "a system goalie". His save % will never be great because he doesn't se a million shots. But not every goalie can do what he does. Look at Cujo for instance. He was a treendous goalie, but looked horrible only seeing 18-20 shots a night. He didn't have the head to stay in the game while waiting around. He was an effin world beater in Toronto and Edmonton though when he saw 35+ shots. Even Hasek, who I still can't stand didn't look anything like the goalie that played in Buffalo when he was here. Yes he was a little older and a couple groin pulls removed from his best days, but he had trouble with too few of shots as well.
Ozzie should make the hall because he's a very good goalie and at some point he'll collect that 400th win. And let's face it bad goalies don't make it to 400 wins.

+1 For the best response so far about ozzie. What you say is very true, I remember watching cujo and hasek struggle, thinking 'man, even mike vernon was able to handle this'
plus, Legace has done very little since leaving detroit, and when he was the wings backup he was dominant.

Cujo was terrible. Yeah he was good for Toronto but he always choked in the playoffs. Ozzie is by far a better goalie than him.

I went to the Red Wings/Sabres game on Saturday. Detroit did not show up til halfway through the game. Not sure what it looked like on TV, but they looked terrible live. We had Buffalo fans behind us talking shit and we couldn't do anything about it til 25 minutes into the 3rd. By the way when the drunk a-holes start their "Here we go, Buffalooooo" chant, it is a good idea to come up with something other than "Your Mom's a ho, Buffalooooo".

Next time, just ask them how many rings they have, or who's the current champs. That should at least quiet them down a little.

Or say to them, "Hey do you remember when Brett Hull beat Hasek in Game 7 and you guys lost the finals? Yeah that was funny. Oh and then when both of them came to Detroit and won a Cup with us too? Yeah even funnier."
By the way, Detroit's Defense sucked against Dallas the other night. The only reason Detroit came out with a point in that game was because of Osgood.

Yeah I don't know, but that diving glove save he had sure made him look like a HOF goalie. I guess letting in 5 goals on 49 shots means you suck big time.

Mine is more of a question than a complaint. Why dosen't Huds get more Ice time? The next leading scorer that gets less than 14 min/game is Lebda, and only has 10 points. Hudler has 35. His defense is a little weak, but his scoring I think more than makes up for it.

Not sure about the ice time thing. My guess is they want to have the 3 strong scoring lines and with Zetterberg and Datsyuk on the top 2 lines, Huddler, Samuelson, and (oh hell I can't think who is on that line) gets sloppy thirds. On Saturday he had a goal and an assist and Franzen who was -1 with zero points gets 3rd star. What the EFF!

I was pissed when I woke up this morning and saw that score. Oh well though, I guess it's about time for their mid-season slump. First time all year they've lost two games in a row (without overtime). I must say though that the only thing worse than losing to a team from California is losing to a team from Arizona. Of course losing to a team from Florida would be worst of all I think. Maybe Atlanta. That would sting a little.

I was there. I gorged myself on the bitter tears of Red Wings fans who can't bother to cheer for the team that they live by.
They were loud and cheering until that 5th goal where Enver Lisin jumped a defenseman and shot it between Conlin's legs before he had even landed.

That is because most "fans" don't know much about hockey. "This player is better than that one, because he has more points..." "That goalie sucks, because he doesn't get a shoutout every time out..."
I hate people. :-[

FB was talking this morning about how the wings feel that everyone is out to get them (Lids and Datsuk getting suspended, and I guess there was a list of other things)
I have noticed one more thing, not that it's anyone out to get them.... Keep an eye out at NHL.com. They list the three stars for the previous night. There will be several nights that a Wing will have like 2 goals and an assist, and the win, but someone like Crosby will get a 2nd or third star with only a goal and an assist.
EDIT: E-mailed the show for the article he was referencing:

That's a great article. I was hoping somebody would post about what the guys said this morning. I only heard bits and pieces of it but I'm pissed about the "suspension." I've always said that the league doesn't want Detroit to win. For some reason, they don't want the dynasty to continue. Maybe if Crosby played for Detroit, then the NHL would like Detroit.

I wish the league would stop sucking his D already. I mean christ, there are tons of rookie or young pplayers just as or more exciting than him... Alex Ovechkin, Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Nikita Filatov, Steve Mason, Steve Stamkos(great moves), Drew Doughty to name a few.
They want to market the league, but they're doing a shit job of it.

Isn't there checks and balances in the NHL? I mean the guy is obviously doing a miserable job, being on a cable station Versus that most people don't even have, not to mention the coverage on say ESPN that they get is an afterthought at best.
I say don't blow the whistle for chincy obstruction calls that aren't blatant take-downs, and let these guys play some freakin hockey.

Since this is the only Red Wings thread, I want to speculate which Wings will have their numbers retired.
Sure thing - Lidstrom
Chelios - I think so
After that... Hank, if he continues to play remotely close to what he is now, and stays relatively healthy.
Datsuk, if he stays with the team for most of his career.
Homer, Draper, Malts, Ozzie? Maybe, but you can't retire all of the numbers from one era, can you?
EDIT: I think Osgood should be right up there close to Chelios.... but then you have to consider the others that won the same cups as him (including McCarty)

I'd say Lidstrom, Chelios, Draper, Osgood for current wings. Z and Pav like you said if they stay healthy.
Awesome thing that Zetterberg is a wing for life now after signing that 12 year contract. I haven't seen how much is is worth yet, if anybody knows.

I think it was $7.45 mil a year, or something like that. I'll try to find something this morning sometime.
EDIT: 12 years, $73 mil

what an ingenious move it was to have the last four years go like this:
3.35mil
3.35mil
1mil
1mil
So now the salary cap hit is 6million instead of upwards to 7.5million. I think they mostly did this so they could sign Hossa instead of Franzen long term, as they'd garner 7+million or 5+million respectively.
And come on, I like Franzen, but Hossa? Wings would have the top three two way forwards in the game signed to long term deals.

The "Red Wing for life" stuff might be premature. He would be 40 at the end of the contract and Chelios is 63 and still playing.
