Octuplets
#1
So....what are your thoughts on the latest set of Octuplets?

My thoughts: A single mother of six already, unemployed, all children conceived by IVF. Where the F did she get the money 1. to pay for all the IVF 2. to support the children she already has? You know damn well she is on welfare and the hospital bill as well as the previous 6 hospital bills and all the health insurance for all those kids is going to be paid by all of us!!! I have two kids because THAT'S ALL I CAN AFFORD!!!!!! This is ridiculous! Those children should be taken away and given to people who can't have children but can pay for them without the financial support of the rest of us! At least the Duggars can pay for their 18 kids, and the McAughly 7 pay their own way......this woman is pathetic!!!!

Except that the picture you're providing is of the Duggars, not the woman with octuplets.

To answer the question - I think if the stories of her finances are true, it's odd that she'd have so many children. That said, I don't think it's up to me to decide how many children someone should have, but at the same time, she should not receive any more public assistance than that necessary to raise the children. Give her WIC, get them fed, etc. But SHE doesn't get a dime, and the assistance to the babies only lasts for a year.

I'm not a fan of removing children from a home unless there are grave consequences if you don't. In my world, she'd be told that she's got to start supporting them, and that the state will only continue to provide for them for their first year. After that, she's being cut off, and if she fails to provide for them, they'll be taken from her.

I know it was the Duggars...I just liked the caption!

I thought that was obivious.....does anyone know what the dumb ass looks like?!

Her parents are to blame. Don't tell me they didn't know she was going in for another one, regardless if they were implanting her with one egg or eight.

This is where mandatory sterilization comes in. Especially if the state is picking up the tab. Anyone on welfare needs to be on birth control or fixed after so many kids that you can't take care of. Sorry if this offends anyone but I've got a cousin that works for the housing authority and the stories she tells about these single women spitting out kid after kid with no fathers or jobs would make you sick too. I agree with mainerliser, I've got two because that's what we can afford.

I read that she used to work at a fertility clinic so my guess is that she was a guinea pig. Although we are required to run psychological and sociological background tests before IVF, and it's against our policy to place more than 3 embryos, let's play a game called "how many we can implant successfully?" and if we kill you it's no big loss. Luckily for her, she had 8 and didn't die, so she's now going to be a millionaire from charities and televisions shows.

I think I qualify for that job.
That's what she said.

I don't agree with mandatory sterilization, because if the recipient of the public assistance is sterilized, they can't begin reproducing once they are OFF public assistance. What I would like to see in place of sterilization is a clause in the agreement that imposes a limit. We'll pay for up to 3. After that you're on your own.

And no, I'm not at all in favor of public assistance. If it were up to me, it would be eliminated tomorrow. My concern is the kids of those milking the system. Those are the kids who would go without if it weren't for welfare.

That right there, her need for cash for interviews so she can 'raise' her 14 children, is why they should be snatched from her greedy ass now. You don't have kids so you can have an income... kids aren't supposed to support the parents! Everyone involved here dropped the ball...big time.

...which is where the sterilization comes in. How many really get off the assistance? It's a never ending cycle. Those kids who grew up on assistance will in turn have kids of their own and get assistance too. If you've got money to spit out 3,4,5 kids, go for it...but really, who wants more than 2? Then you're outnumbered. Wink

It's a never ending cycle because the system is set up to perpetuate the problem, whereas having a definitive end date (or no assistance at all, save for the essential nutrients of the children) would mean they HAVE to get going.

I could go on for hours about comprehensive welfare reform (mandatory urine screenings, home visits to ensure there's no cable television, DVD players, cell phones, etc.) and how I'd like to change the system, but the unfortunate reality is that the bleeding hearted among us would never permit it, because it's too intrusive. So the result is all we can do is deal with the system as it's currently set up. Under a reformed system, there would be more incentive to break free of the system, and for those who don't, a cold dose of reality as it shuts down around them.

Totally agree with you. I would love to see someone step inside these homes and see exactly what that 'free' money is being spent on. It burns my ass up to stand behind some freeloader in the checkout line, who's talking on a phone that cost more than you'd ever spend, and then they proceed to use a Effing food stamp card, then load up their Cadillac Escalade with the Effing rims and loud ass radio...... :-[ i gotta stop....

I used to know some people and I knew the intricacies of how they manipulated the system. Some worked under the table, others spent their own money on pot and widescreen TV's from Rent-a-Center while the taxpayers paid for their food.

I don't mind assisting those who A) truly, genuinely can't work or B) those making an honest attempt to succeed. But if you're accepting tax dollars, you should be living transparently. If you're in subsidized housing, expect random, unannounced home inspections. Make it MISERABLE for these people to stay on the payroll, and they won't stay on the payroll.

It's supposed to be a hand-up, not a hand-out!

I know people who tried to get help and couldn't because 1) their income was a touch too much and 2) they didn't have enough children to qualify. How Effed up is that?!

I nominate hotzester for president. He's for some REAL change!

That may explain the ONE IVF that she had for the Octuplets BUT she had SIX other children ALL by IVF!!!! If she has enough money for that much IVF (because that's not covered by insurance, or the state) why are we supporting her ass?!!! That's what pisses me off. Have as many children as you want as long as YOU support them NOT me!!!!!! I don't think she'll be getting much money from TV or charities unless they start parodying (sp) like AnnaNicole! That's about how intellegent she is!

They at least support their children without federal or state assistance, AND they pay cash for everything! They do not use credit....if they don't have the money they don't get it!!

They still creep me out. I respect their business decisions and desires to stay out of debt, and I even respect their religious choices. But there's just something odd there, and I can't put my finger on it.

I just liked the caption!!!! I don't mind the Duggars, really, more power to them! She actually needs to have 17 more, I think! Our economy wouldn't be in the craptastic state it's in now if more people used cash instead of credit. If you can't afford it, you don't need it! People trying to live above their means.... a champagne taste on a beer budget.

It can't be the fact that I personally think they're related...or everyone of their kids have a J name.....

didn't their oldest son just get married? They're down one babysitter now....

Well the fact that he is TOTALLY Kenneth from 30 Rock in 25 years doesn't help old JimBob.

I think what it is for me, aside from that, is their extremism. I don't care if you're religious. That's cool. But once you start spouting off about how dancing is a sin because it makes you lust after women....yeah that's when I start to see if there's a watchlist somewhere that you should be on.

I think she makes all their clothes. Maybe we should chip in and get her a modern dress making book. I think styling the hair is a sin in their eyes. Besides, can you improve on her hotness? I think not. She must be slinging some pretty good stuff his way, seeing as he can't keep his hands off of her! :-*

I have a strong suspicion that someone whose religious beliefs don't allow dancing probably doesn't put blowjobs near the top of the "acceptable practices" list........though they should.

I think its rediculous. I hope that she gets shunted by the media as being an attention whore.

The thing that really sucks is it is all the children that have it bad in this situation. I think that as often as negligence and lack of responsibility are enough to condem someone as a child abuser, she would stand in that category. The only reason she had this many kids at once (she knew what she was doing) is a psychological imbalance. Her own mother even says she has issues about obsessing with having babies. It wouldn't be so bad if she was bringing them into a stable (financially and psychologically) home, but she's not.

When a person, that has had trouble getting pregnant goes for the last resort of Invitro, IF they are lucky enough to have one child let alone multiples, then that case is a miracle, and is something special.
This woman is no better than a side show at a circus, I feel bad for the kids.

I've heard about this on the news but haven't followed the story like you all have so I can't comment on that. What I will say (rhetorical question) is what are people thinking having this many kids when they don't give a crap about what sort of world they're leaving to them?

Great!!! I work 40 hours a week. I have to lose a lot of weight. I have to take Metformin 500 mg (3x a day). Just to try to get pregnant. I am almost out of debt...and I am having a hard time getting pregnant. My husband just got laid off on January 5th, so we are putting off baby making until he gets a stable job. But I still have to do the other stuff... This woman makes me sick.

Edit: Metformin is to make my body stop rejecting my insulin.

The only screening they would've probably done would be a medical health screening, and since they can't ask her if she can AFFORD her children, I don't see anything indicating why she would've failed it.

Well, a "reputable" fertility clinic would have done a lot more than just a medical health screening. There is psychological testing that is used in these clinics as well. She obviously went to a "less than reputable" facility to have this IVF. It's irresponsible all around. The mother, her parents, the "Drs" who performed the IVF, they all are to blame for what will happen to these children! And they all should be the ones footing the bill on all 14 children, not the rest of us!!! You wonder why health care is so expensive.....this is a prime reason!! I hate to say it, but the "freedoms" of our country have made this a country of irresponsible people who think they should be given everything and denied nothing! It's disgusting! (And I'm a liberal....a liberal with a sense of responsibility!)

Yeah but even a psych evaluation would be part of a medical screening, and not delve into her personal finances.

I think that having 6 other kids would have come into a factor at most IVF places.
Unless she found some way to pay for the IVF herself, the insurance or government health plan shes on should be responsible too.
