Intelligence - SO - 06-24-2003 Quote:You disagree with Bill O'Reilly's views? OK, I understand that you might disagree with the whole shock jock thing, but in my opinion. a lot of what he says is good common sense and information so obvious that most people should know it, but really don't.The shock jock thing was just one example, I thought it to be an appropriate one to give on this board. I said I disagree with most of his views, yes. Iraq, Death Penalty, religion, to name a few. He's very authoritarian, I'm more libertarian. I disagree with most people's views most of the time - O'Reilly is really no different. A few interesting points though... Quote:He talks about advertisements, and how people spend without thinking or because they're thinking that they need to have what they think, based on advertisements, that everyone else has. Is that absurd? No, that's not absurd. We've become a nation of consumer robots, I guess it's an unfortunate consequence of living in a capitalist society. What I think is really interesting about this point, is that this is along the same lines of why I dislike O'Reilly and people of his ilk. Watch this: He talks about politics, and how people watch the news/political talk shows without thinking or because they're thinking that they need to believe what the people on the TV think, based on beliefs, that they think everyone else has. Is that absurd? The same way people are programmed to buy all the pretty products all the beautiful people on TV tell them to buy, people are programmed politically through things like the cable news channels and (non-"shock jock") talk radio. It's not just Bill O'Reilly I have a problem with. You're a fan of his, great, more power to you. At least you're not an Ann Coulter fan - that bitch is so whacked out she makes Billy Boy look like Karl Marx in comparison. I'm running out of time, but I do have more to say (as if anyone's actually reading this, riight...). Later. Intelligence - MYLF - 06-24-2003 I did read all of it, and feel free to continue on ![]() Intelligence - Rooner - 06-24-2003 I choose not to argue over O'Reilly. Some people like apples, some oranges, me, I think oranges suck ass through a garden hose, but hey, its my opinion. Do I need some more commas in there somewhere? Intelligence - GreasyItalianPrincess - 06-24-2003 you sure do a lot of sucking Intelligence - Rooner - 06-24-2003 What? No incarceration joke to accompany that insult? You suck! ![]() Intelligence - MYLF - 06-24-2003 Quote:He talks about politics, and how people watch the news/political talk shows without thinking or because they're thinking that they need to believe what the people on the TV think, based on beliefs, that they think everyone else has. Is that absurd? You are right, but he's the first to tell you (at least in the book) that that's the case. I think the reason he started out and became big is because he was saying, you're not hearing the whole truth or any truth. Of course, I am not quite so naive that I believe that there's not a slant on his side as well, but in the end, I find myself agreeing with him more often than not, and I like that he doesn't people wimp out on answering the question that was asked. I don't know, I guess I just don't really understand why so many people here dislike him, because I've never really gotten a good reason other than that everyone seems to view him as pompous. I just find it surprising, because in my view, he's calling people out on what they're saying, and not letting them get away with the same old bullshit rhetoric that is supposed to pass as an answer. I just assumed that a group like this would like that about someone. Intelligence - GreasyItalianPrincess - 06-24-2003 The problem is he picks and choses those from a select group. He never turns that scrying eye to searching for bullshit from the Right. He never does, and never bites the hand that feeds him. Therefore, he falls into that boat of Right Wing rhetoric. Someone like Christopher Hitchens, who lambasts both the Right and Left is the true no-spin zone king. Bill is just spin as he chooses, and not spin at those he chooses to bring down. His choices, not necessarily his views are suspect. Intelligence - MYLF - 06-24-2003 Quote:Originally posted by GreasyItalianPrincessI disagree with that completely. I think he picks on "his own" as well. Intelligence - Rooner - 06-24-2003 I cant belive Im gonna say this, but I have to agree with the GIPster. Intelligence - GreasyItalianPrincess - 06-24-2003 NEVER TOUCHES THE RIGHT WING STALWARTS...ever. He'll hit only established issues or critical stuff in news at time. Meanwhile, he always looks to find new stuff and rip the left. There is no middleground that he comes from. He'll hit both on latest in news...but never sifts very deep to the Right. And, never muckrakes like he does to Left. |
