it's amazing what Public Opinion (fed by the media, of course) can do to affect a governments' ability to rule over its' people.
and that is why "the Man" favors a guy like Rupert Murdock owning as much as the media pie as he does. All you have to do is line his ONE pocket to get the "gov'ment endorsed appropriate word" out to the masses.

this whole War on Terror is such a "damn if we do, damned if we don't" scenario...
did France have a right to oppose us in our efforts to go into Iraq and take out that regime? Perhaps they were.
But, for them to acknowledge after the start of the military campaign, "oh, since there ARE WMDs around, uh..umm...guess we'll help...from way back here. Oh, and hey, can we have a piece of the rebuilding effort - we see money that can be made here...um, I mean...fighting Iraq is bad. BAD.
