I think the problem with saying the pledge is that they never teach you why you say it, or what meaning it really has.

Yeah really how many kids really care about the pledge? About 0%. All it is is some words they have to say before going to their first class of the day.

I don't think the people teaching it to us really understood what it or this country stood for until recently too. I think when we all have children one day, the level of patriotism we raise our families with will be starkly different than that with which we were all raised.

Pledging allegiance to the flag of a nation suggests you wouldn't commit treason and you are indivisable of your beliefs in what your nation stands for. Fight to the death to protect it's principals.

how does standing up in class or at a ballgame reciting the pledge make this true? it should be in your heart not by reciting some mindless pledge

It's 31 fucking words swearing your commitment to what so many have fought for us to have. If you can't decipher the meaning of 31 words, none over 3 sylables and you need someone to explain it to you, God (ooops) help us all. If you say it without meaning it, be like the muslim kid and don't say it. The next plane for Iraq leaves in the morning. Get the fuck on it!

You can instill love of liberty in one by actually discussing the subject because that'll probably work better than just giving them a pledge.

Uh... I think that's his point, old guy. That we (meaning every child in every public school in the united states) are instructed to make this pledge wether we agree or even understand what we're saying.

Call me a coward but, I'm not willing to "fight to the death to protect it's principals". That's what I pay taxes for. So, someone else can "fight to the death to protect it's principals" for me.

Not really...I mean the issue here is the word God...OAS feels the pledge promises loyalty to the country which we all seem to be in agreement that the majority of the time it's just said out of habit and not with understanding, and well when you're married you promise loyalty before god too. Sometimes words are empty....(just to make things clear this isn't an anti-divorce line, it's just a comparison)

I don't see a whole lotta you folks fighting to the death to protect principals like "liberty" and "justice" when anyone wearing a turbin is yanked from a commercial airline.
