What do you consider the greatest SCI-FI story? (movie, tv, or book)

I'm partial to B5. It could be the best TV show ever, not just in Sci-Fi.

I like the Stargate Series also. The tie ins to mythology is cool.

Favorite Science Fiction TV Show is easy- Mystery Science Theater 3000 whether or not you consider it Sci Fi or not. Also one of the best written shows in history. Second place I'm gonna kick it old school with The Twilight Zone.

Favorite Sci Fi Movie- 2001: A Space Odyssey--on weed.

Actual Sci Fi Story/plotline- Dune was an excellent series bookwise and The X-Files' first few seasons was really entrancing before it became painfully obvious that Carter had no idea where he was going. Never watched Babylon 5.

Ikea, good timing.

The Sci-Fi channel is just beginning the cycle over again. The very first episode aired last night. They air them all in order every weeknight at 7:00. The first season is really slow, but there's a LOT of character developement and background that really pays off in season two. Give it a shot.

Snoteater, gotta agree with you. B5 was the best sci-fi series. Ii can't wait for Babylon 5:Legend of the Rangers (the new series pilot movie).

And I'm addicted to Stargate. Great series.

Best movie is tough. I gotta go with Harlen Ellison's definition of Sci-Fi vs. Science Fiction.

Sci-Fi : Pure entertainment. Like an amusement park ride. Science Fiction elements thrown in for eye candy, etc.

Science Fiction : Puts a mirror to our world and let's us look at people, politics, etc. in a different setting and a more open mind.

Best Sci-Fi : Aliens

Best Science Fiction : Contact (Jodie Foster as the astronomer.

I'm gonna go ahead and state the obvious: The Star Wars Movie Series.

I grew up watching all the originals in the theaters, and I can't get enough. I wish I had all the toys and stuff still with me, in good condition.
There are alot who disagree...but I think it to be the bar for others to reach.

T.V. : I still love watching "Quantum Leap".
I was really into "Voyagers" and all those time travel shows and movies, but I think this was one of the best written, best cast, series ever.

Ya, I probably should. I saw it once, when I was 10 or so,... my first anime ever, as I remember. Needless to say, I remember some wierd flashy crap and some motorcycles. Eh. I just dropped 35 bucks for an Evangelion Boxset on ebay, so I'll delay Akira a little, maybe get a VCD from a friend.

Anywho, I'll lay off the all-time discussion, but my favorite CURRENT series is the Invisible Man on SciFi.

I've seen a few episodes of B5, it was pretty cool so I changed my geek code from "!5" to "5". Bonus points if you understoof that. I never got into it though, but I have a friend who doesnt shut up about it. Thanks for the heads up Dent. I take back what I said about your being a knee-biter.

I hope this box set didnt include the first Volume. ADV just decided to re-release the first volume because the first printing had a glitch which affected the quality of the DVD.

And i cannot stress enough how much this DVD rocks. Dual Language tracks (Japanese 5.1 audio track and New Dub job), and a shitload of extras (like over 4000 production stills and 1 1/2 hours of video extras). Just get it. Now.

Well, I'm not really into the sci fi channel, farscape, b5, and I think Stargate's kinda cheesy (sorry, can't get used to McGuyver in space lol), and esp. not Star Trek cuz it's lame (well, maybe I'll watch the new one, LOVE Scott Bakula)

Anyway, my all-time favorite show would have to be V
movie- the Holy Trilogy, of course

Technically, Star Wars is a FANTASY set in space, not sci-fi. Force = Wizardry. The whole idea of a group going on a quest, etc. is all fantasy. Even Lucas and the most hard-core fans agree.

And fdjgouwuoz, do you remember the name of that book? Just started getting into fantasy recently. Couldn't get into it because every book that looked interesting is part 1 of a 30 book story.

EDIT : Now that i stop and think about it, Farscape is equal parts sci-fi and fantasy. It's got a lot of magic, mysticism, and a group on a quest. It also does the whole, let's look at humanity throught the eyes of an alien type stuff.

dent's right...in a fantasy book i was reading, the author had commenary in the middle of it becuase this book was like a guide to how he made his other books.he went off on the differences between sci-fi and fantasy, and star wars was fantasy all the way

I watched these back to back one night & then nothing made any sense.

TV: Farscape is pretty good. The Frat-boy main guy bothers me. He's just too... fratty.

I think I like LEXX better. (I always forget when it's on.)

Oops - how could I forget all the Star Wars. It is such a cultrual icon. :) (And they have Harrison Ford, mmmmm.)

I thought I put in the line in my first post "and you have to give props for Star Wars" but I might have taken it out. Dman it.

Also if you want to go really old sci-fi movies, probably the first sci-fi movies and arguably the best silent film METROPOLIS.

Blade Runner is also one of the best movies ever made. Nearly 20 years old and the effects are still comparable to anything CGI, possibly better.

Movie-Two movies really stand out.

Got to agree with seph on everything about Akira. The Special Ediion DVD is amazing. Definitely a must buy(if anybody tries to justify selling you the tin version for way more don't do it. The tin is cool but doesn't justify some of these guys selling it for 50 bucks on ebay.)

Also Blade Runner stands out. What sucks though is the author finally said that he was an Android ruining the discussion.

TV-Two more stand out.

Farscape is one of best drama series in a very long time. It has very deep, engrossing storylines.

Also I love Lexx. It is one of those quirky shows that always impresses. For fans of the show I suggest seeing "Tales From a Parrallel Universe" which spawned the Lexx series. It goes into a lot of the Divine Shadow story.
