| O&A Board Regular Registered: Jul. 00  | I feel like starting some controversy today. I applaud the Borough of Belmar for being the first Shore town to take this long over-due step. I'm not making any judgements about people who smoke, but as an avid beach goer and as someone who has participated in and led beach clean-ups for years, I despise cigarette butts. The fact that people use the beach as their ash-tray angers me to no end and I think this is a great move by the town. Basically, smoking will only be permitted in designated areas where ash-trays will be located. Any violators will be fined $25. Again, I don't care if you smoke. I just care about our natural resources and the health of my children. Here's the text of the story: Visit this Website Bring it on! | O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I'm a smoker, but I also applaud this motion to ban smoking on the beach. There have been several instances where I will go on the sand, set up shop, only to find butts buried within the sand, or even strewn about (I've actually seen people bring an ashtray with them, use it, and then dump it out and bury it with sand!) When I go, I'll smoke if its not too crowded near my spot, or if it is, I'll walk up to one of the bars and have one there. | O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | ....and what about the hypodermic needles and other waste washing up on shore, especially from dredging...plus, Dubya just took away most of the budget for beach clean-ups (Thanks Christie Whitman, head of the EPA!!!), leaving it in the hands of the state almost totally...Cigarette butts are going to be the least of our worries :( no-one ever tends to me. Sitting alone covered in breeze. Some things are so my mind can breathe. The waiting is hard, fuckin' takes so long. Draped in sun, hands in sand. Earth acid cleanses me. I usually don't like smoking on the beach anyways, I would rather save that for the bars the night before and after, trust me, that's enough right there. It just doesn't seem right, with the fresh ocean air to be smoking at the same time, kind of roooooons it ....... but that's just my opinion ...... -Someday, sometime, I will get my lazy ass to transfer to another site ... until then ..... | ||||

| O&A Board Regular Registered: Jul. 00 | Yes Spitfire, it is a small problem compared to the anal rape that George W. is committing on our future. But, big change starts with small change. Through the efforts of Federal Legislation and Local Activist Groups, Jersey Beaches HAVE become a lot cleaner. But, with the loss of the funding that Spitfire referred to, we need to find simple ways to prevent the need for the Clean-ups in the first place. Belmar residents pay a lot of taxes to keep the beaches clean...it's only fair for the town to recoup some of this money from the perpetrators. And, by the way, this still won't mean that I will go to the beach there. Until they ban bennies too. | O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | Though I smoke I like the law. Belmar will always find ways to generate revenue. Whether it's a $375 noise complaint, or a $25 fine for this. So now these summer rent a cops will be harassing us for this too?? Like they weren't big enough ass-f's already. Sorry if that offended anyone but dealing with Summer rent a cops in Belmar has always been a hassle.  Slacking in progress. | ||||

As long as they're indistinguishable from the ones washing up on the shore. Speaking of which, remember when that happened, how they were always found on Monday but mysteriously cleaned up by Friday? Of course...here comes the weekend crowds...yeah, the beaches are clean now, of course they are! But oh my god, not a cigarette butt...AAAAAUUGGHHH!!! Oh well, I guess Belmar doesn't want my money this summer. Fortunately, Point Pleasant is only a few miles down the Parkway.
