Obviously the people on this message board enjoy writing. Some of the people here have some real talent. I was a journalism minor in college, but have not really pursued it, and went into the business world ( had to make the cash first. ) I've been putting together a pilot, and was curious if any one here had ever done this, or a movie script, book, etc.

I've always wanted to write something like a screenplay, or even a simple novel, but I neither have the time nor the ambition to start one.

I think the trick to making it by writing a screenplay is to look like Matt Damon and/or Ben Affleck...damn lucky with Good Will Hunting...

I actually write poety and I used to write on an e-zine that is no more (sigh). I am also in the middle of writing a play/musical. Knowing me, it will never get done, but I'm trying. It's tough.

I minored in creative writing in college, and did very well in it. I never persued it as a career because I feel that to make a life out of writing, you really need to have a passion for it. I like to write, but when I feel the need, or if I have a good idea for a story. I actually have a "novel" in progress that I visit every now and again when I get the itch.

written tons of stories. I am also currently
working on a screenplay. What kind of advice are

WoundedAngel, that is an AWESOMELY sexy sig pic.
Opie696, you are right. No offense to TeenSlut, but I
don't think any serious literary organization would
consider what she does "writing". Except for maybe
Hustler, more likely Cheri, and definitely Swank. But
who the hell reads those for the "writing" anyway?

I don't really write that much but I do have a lot of concepts that could be does well if I had talent. I'm not good at poetry and most of my creative writing is usually for someone else for a fee and that is usually bad. I'm not often inspired.

I did actually end up writing/directing a short film (I write scripts better than writing actual stories) for an Englsh final that I enjoyed doing. Sure the original script was mostly changed to add comedy but as I said, I'm usually better with concepts more than the actually writing.

I'm not sure if this would be consider writing but how about when you go to online chat and develop different personas. I'm not talking about the land of RP but you talk to someone allegedly telling the truth about themselves and you create a different person for your end of the monitor whether it's an 18 year old manic depressive chick or a 25 old insurance investigator. I mean you create situations you get yourself into, you make characters in your life be it family, a spouse, a co-worker. Basically the only need for existance is a person you talk to to make you create new scenerios for these people.

I want to major in journalism in college and
eventually be a sportswriter. I write for
ArenaFan, an online newspaper for Arena Football.
This is why I'm such a big Dragons fan. Through
this, I've made connections with officials from
the 3 major pro football leagues; NFL, Arena
League, and CFL, and I'm just about guaranteed an
internship in college.

I took a few writig classes in college (English minor), and I used to write quite a bit. I had a few short stories published (nothing major, school and college based 'zines) and like some of you, I have a novel that I have been working on forever. I've done some technical writing at work, very boring unless you are in the field.

It seems from what you hear in this message board, and from my personal experience with some of my friends who had Creative Writing as their major, that it's extremely difficult to have a successful career writing.

I always have thought, to a degree, that if you chose writing as your vocation that you may very well be an excellent candidate for 'starving artist' land.

A lot of people who produce screenplays are trying to land the "big one." Take a gander at M. Knight Shaymalan for instance. There's a guy who took The Sixth Sense and hit a major league home run. He has basically guaranteed himself a career in the future from one kick-ass hit. Can everyone do that?

Hell, even if you have the talent it's questionable because so much of that sort of thing relies on luck. Or, to put it a better way, you might fall victim to the old proverb, "It's not what you know, it's who you know."

If you could get some agent to take your script, your pilot, and it was really good and run with it... nicey nice!

And a lot of the people who write in TV have good careers. They write all the time, they've got steady work. It's basically the nature of the beast when you're dealing with serialized writing that they're always going to need someone there to either write scripts or doctor them up.

If you do actually write your pilot and get it to an agent, my bet is that you're probably eight millions times further ahead of the game than the rest of us who have writing aspirations, but who, for whatever reason, just don't get off our asses and do anything about it.

I look at my own situation. I have a screenplay that I'm thinking of writing that would not only be humorous, but also cheap to produce (no special effects or big stars required to make the thing work), but importantly I HAVEN'T EVEN STARTED DOING IT.

I've got a mortgage to pay, I've got certification tests to study for and take so I can ensure that I have a steady and increasing stream of income. Wouldn't it be great if I could just write in my spare time and come up with a smash hit?

It's the dream of all, but I would think if you want to be different and successful, just DO it!
