I personally prefer the Stones, but the Beatles are a very close second.

There is a theory which states that if anyone discovers exactly what the universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another which staes this has already happened. ---Douglas Adams

Stones. They've been able to stand together the test of time. They've persevered through all the different phases of music yet have always adapted without losing site of their roots and sound. They live up to their moniker as the World's Greatest Rock n' Roll Band.

The Beatles

let's not forget how The Stones ripped the Beatles off in the 60's. From copying the Sgt. Pepper album cover, to Let It BE vs. Let It Bleed!

i'll say mine in a song that doesn't deal with the topic
Sympathy For The Devil (Jagger/Richards)

Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long long year stolen many man's soul and faith
I was around when Jesus Christ had His moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate washed his hands and sealed His fate
Pleased to meet you hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you is the nature of my game

Stuck around St. Petersburg when I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the Tzar and his ministers, Anastasia screamed in vain
I rode a tank held a gen'rals rank when the blitzkrieg
raged and the bodies stank
Pleased to meet you hope you guess my name. Oh yeah
Ah what's puzzling you is the nature of my game. Oh yeah

I watched the glee while your kings and queens fought for
ten decades for the Gods they made
I shouted out "Who killed the Kennedy's?" when after all
it was you and me
Let me please intruduce myself I'm a man of wealth and taste
And I lay traps for troubadors who get killed before they reach Bombay
Pleased to meet you hope you guess my name. Oh yeah
But what's puzzling you is the nature of my game. Oh yeah
Pleased to meet you hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you is the nature of my game

Just as every cop is a criminal and all the sinners, Saints
as heads is tails, just call me Lucifer 'cause I'm in need
of some restraint
So if you meet me, have some courtesy have some sympathy
and some taste
Use all your well learned politesse or I'll lay your soul to waste
Pleased to meet you hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you is the nature of my game

Lady Jane (Jagger/Richards)

My sweet lady Jane, when I see you again
Your servant am I, and will humbly remain
Just heed this plea, my love. On bended knees my love
I pledge myself to lady Jane

My dear lady Anne, I've done what I can
I must take my leave, for promised I am
The play is run, my love. Your time has come my love
I pledge my soul to lady Jane

Oh, my sweet Marie, I wait at your ease
The sands have run out, for your lady and me
When love is nigh, my love, her station's right my love
Life is secure with lady Jane

I'm still saved....

I think this sums up everything I'm feeling right now...

[edit] and oh yeah, Beatles. Not even close. Not only do I prefer them personally, you have to look at the influence they had on everyone that followed after them... so much has been written about this, any more would be overkill[/edit]

Strawberry Fields Forever (Lennon/McCartney)

Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields.
Nothing is real and nothing to get hungabout.
Strawberry Fields forever.

Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see.
It's getting hard to be someone but it all works out, it doesn't matter much to me.
Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields.
Nothing is real and nothing to get hungabout.
Strawberry Fields forever.

No one I think is in my tree, I mean it must be high or low.
That is you can't you know tune in but it's all right, that is I think it's not too bad.
Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields.
Nothing is real and nothing to get hungabout.
Strawberry Fields forever.

Always, no sometimes, think it's me, but you know I know when it's a dream.
I think I know I mean a 'Yes' but it's all wrong, that is I think I disagree.
Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to Strawberry Fields.
Nothing is real and nothing to get hungabout.
Strawberry Fields forever.
Strawberry Fields forever.

Beatles were more influential but I prefer the Stones. At the start the Beatles were really too clean cut and plain, the Stones seemed to have more going, more thought.

i'd have to go with the beatles.

It's not about who came before or who influenced who it's the quality.

Yeah the beatles influenced the stones and wrote the stones first number one song for them and really helped them but beyond that.

The beatles in a span of less than 7 years released so much amazing material. You can not compile a best of cd and say here you go thats the beatles. It doesnt matter how long you stay together menudos been together for over 2 decades whats the point?

It's a personal taste but the beatles will always beat the stones on any list anywhere. No one can touch the lyrical stylings and skills and the amazing instrumantation and structure of their music. The beatles never had a flop of an album every album was a pure astonoshing work of art better than the previous.

Everey little song there are so many that you can not name them all. From yesterday to hey jude from strawberry fields to love me do and from please please me to a day in the life.

rubber soul, the white album, abbey road, revolver, let it be.

And the greatest album or all times the most important album in recorded sound, Sgt Peppers. From the beach boys, the stones, to hendrix they all bowed before them as they solidified and shut up the critics once and for all as to why they were the greatest.

7 years 7 albums a double album 20 number one hits and over a billion records sold and they have stood the test of time, as long as people wanna hear of love and peace so shall the beatles live.

So spake the Cherub; and his grave rebuke,
Severe in youthful beauty, added grace Invincible:
Abashed the Devil stood, And felt how awful goodness is,
and saw Virtue in her shape how lovely; saw,
and pined His loss; but chiefly to find here observed
His lustre visibly impaired; yet seemed Undaunted

Beatles!! They were more influential, better songwriters, and better musicians. The Stones were awesome, sure, but the Beatles are in a class of their own.

Stones...they relied more on the soul of music-- the blues

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of uppers, downers, laughers, screamers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls... The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon.

The Rolling Stones . Their entire history is chock full of tragedy and triumph and everything in between. I dig the Beatles also especially Revolver through Let It Be.

Hey Spit, if you enjoyed Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas, be sure to check out The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Kesey, and The Teachings of Don Juan by Castanada....
