Yeah, I know it's like a week away, but the most exciting playoffs in sports (with baseball a close second), is on the way and since the matchups are beginning to form for the first round, I figure I'd start the official thread now.

Right now, it looks like in the East, where all 8 teams have clinched, the Bruins are gonna hook up with the Habs, the Leafs and Senators will play and the Isles and Devils are fighting for who plays the Flyers or Hurricane, though they are both on the Senators' heels for the fifth spot.

In the West, it is one gigantic clusterfuck just to see who'll make it (Stars KILLED themselves last night), and even for those who look like they WILL make it, it is tough to decipher who will fit where in seed 4-8, thus making the possible matchups endless. The one thing that IS for sure is that the Red Wings will probably either win the West or get swept in the first round and render their great regular season meaningless.

As for my two cents, as an Isles fan, I'm just happy to be in the playoffs. I hope we end up 6th or 7th and NOT 5th now that the division doesn't seem likely after Monday's loss. The reason is of the Leafs, Hurricanes and Flyers, the Canes are the weakest opponent and the Flyers are the great rivalry we have great games against (and we might have their number, not to mention an advantage between the pipes which is HUGE come playoff time). That said, I see us getting to the second round and stopping there, probably getting beat by Ottawa, who always kicks our ass. I think we'll end up sixth, beating out the Devs since we got one more game than them, but fall short of the Sens.

I think the playoffs will go off like this:

EAST

First Round

1 Boston over 8 Montreal
7 Devils over 2 Philly
6 Islanders over 3 Hurricanes
5 Senators over 4 Maple leafs

Second Round

7 devils over 1 Bruins
5 Senators over 6 Islanders

Conf. Finals

Devils over Senators

WEST

Since it's still up in the air, I'll skip the unknown matchups and just say Detroit beats Colorado in the Conf. Finals.

And then, the Devils beat the Red Wings in the Finals for the Cup in 7 games to make up for last year.

Should be a fun playoffs, especially in the West with all the teams being so friggin' even, at least after Detroit, who I think is still somewhat human if you catch them at the right time (FIRST ROUND!).

2002 Crack Committee Objectives:
1. 94 Wins and NL East Title by the Mets this year
2. Hate the Braves with a passion
3. All 5 Starters have winning records this year
4. Mets win World Series
5. Hopefully come up with a better name for the Crack Commitee than something the Mad Dog came up with. Come on!

Jesus Christ, I dont get to start any threads anymore.

How about waiting until the seedings are close to being set before making predictions. Besides Detroit being #1 in the West, anybody can end up anywhere.

Damn right, FB, we have all joined in a conspiracy against you and your Godamned Official Thread Streak :-D

Anyway, I figure at this stage, we know pretty much what's going on in the East, so we can at least get early predictions on that. In general, thpugh, we can get predictions on who you think will make it to the finals and stuff.

I am shocked but I have to agree with FB.

Not one seed is definate. The Isles can still jump ahead of the flyers and there is like 6 points seperating 5 teams in the west.

Hey Quotes, what about the Kings or even ths Sharks? If Felix gets hot the Kings could have a long run, especially with the way Allison has played all season, and the sharks are very deep offensively, something that will help greatly once they get deeper into the postseason (I think they have 7 20-goal scorers).

I think the team to watch is Chicago, they have improved so much this year! Daze is getting better every year, Amonte is always a threat and they are a better all-round team. Goaltending is probably where Chi-Town fill fall because both golies don't have much playoff experience. Vancouver is red-hot, but I'm pretty sure they won't make it if they play Detroit or a very tough San Jose team. Yeah, the Blues stink this year, but in their last 16 games, they have pulled of 11 wins. The only team that really stands out is Detroit. The West will be a fight to the finish. I'm pretty sure the Bruins will meet the Canadiens, and that the Flyers will meet the Devs.... you heard it here first Wings/Bruins!

No way Vancouver. They still arent a lock to make the playoffs, but you have to give Marc Crawford alot of credit to have this team in the position it is in. Crawford gets overlooked as one of the best Head Coaches in Hockey.

But Vancouver will not do anything come Post Season, because come on can you see Dan Cloutier beating Patrick Roy or Dominik Hasek in a Playoff Series?

Detroit still is unquestionably the favorite, but they are not unbeatable. I give Colorado and San Jose the best shots at knocking them off. Watch out for the Sharks they are deep enough to compete with the big 2, which separates them from the rest of the pack.

I would be surprised if its not either the Redwings, Sharks, or Avalanche in the Finals.

I dont like the Blackhawks because Thibault is not winning a Big series for them, and they have not played all that well after a great start. The Blues have loads of talent, but they did a bad job of never getting a goaltender. They should have never let Turek go.

I still cant believe Dallas did not make the playoffs. I think we have seen Ed Belfour's last days in Dallas.

Haha, that'd be funny Quotes. The Isles currently have the reigning heavy-weight champ in net actually (Ozzie) - remember the fights between him and Roy and, earlier, Vernon and Roy? Classic. I also remember the shit that went on a few years ago, when JR was still in Chicago, and Roy and Roenick were exchanging words after a game. He's definitely a conceited motherfucker, but with 4 Cup rings, it's kind of hard to dispute his claims to greatness.

Ok so heres the story for tomorrow.

Islander fans, Id suggest you root for your team to lose tomorrow.

Eastern Conference is locked for 2 series.
#1 Boston vs. #8 Montreal
#2 Philadelphia vs. #7 Ottawa.

If the Islanders Win they will play Toronto in the 1st Round.

If the Islanders lose or tie tomorrow they will play Carolina in the 1st Round.

So you Islander fans rooted for the Rangers today, tomorrow I will return the favor, Lets Go Islanders!

Edit: Actually you can root for the Islanders to tie. A tie will give the Islanders the exact same record as the Devils, 41-28-9-4. The Devils would get the #5 seed as they won the season series 3-2.

Wow, first time all year a Ranger fan rooted for a team in a big spot and that team WON! :-D

The playoff matchups are all set:

East

1 Boston v. 8 Montreal
2 Philadelphia v. 7 Ottawa
3 Carolina v. 6 New Jersey
4 Toronto v. 5 New York (don't need to explain which one, right, FB?)

West

1 Detroit v. 8 Vancouver
2 Colorado v. 7 Los Angeles
3 San Jose v. 6 Phoenix
4 St Louis v. 5 Chicago

Ok, now you can officially predict the actual tournament.

BTW, my new East predictions are:

Bos over Mtl
Phi over Ott (Sens have looked TOO bad lately)
NYI over tor
Nj over Car HUGE!

Then:

Phi over NYI (I think we'd have a chance, but I just have this feeling they'll go to 2nd round and stop there)
Nj over Bos

Then:

NJ over Phi

My West:

First:

Det over Van (could the Wings get a TOUGHER 1st rd? Remember what I said, if they get eliminated in the West it'll be here. I have a sneaky feeling about this, but I'll go with my head and say Det wins in 6 or 7)

Col over LA
SJ over Phx
Chi over StL

Second:

Det over Chi
Col over SJ

Conf. Finals:

Det over Col

And, of course:

NJ over Det for the Cup

2002 Crack Committee Objectives:
1. 94 Wins and NL East Title by the Mets this year
2. Hate the Braves with a passion
3. All 5 Starters have winning records this year
4. Mets win World Series
5. Hopefully come up with a better name for the Crack Commitee than something the Mad Dog came up with. Come on!

My pics are pretty much the same, with the Bruins still winning the Cup. Only now the Flyers will beat the Sens because Ottawa always chokes come playoff time. I guess I'm going to have to cheer for my pick to win it all, the Bruins. I always liked Byron Dafoe. It'd be cool to see 'em in New York someday. I know, I know, Richter is good....I'll shut up.

2002 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS PREDICTIONS

EASTERN CONFERENCE QUARTERFINALS

#1 Boston Bruins vs. #8 Montreal Canadiens
An original Six matchup here in the first round which will add more to what should be an excellent matchup. Montreal is the weaker of the two teams but went on a rampage at the end of the season to overachieve and get themselves into the playoffs. The Canadiens have little to lose here, while the Bruins do not want the bitter feeling of losing in the first round as the #1 seed. Jose Theodore has stolen a playoff spot away from the Capitals and Rangers with his excellent goaltender, theres no reason why he cant steal a playoff round here. The Canadiens have the goaltender advantage which is key and will keep them in this series. But I will go with Boston here and they will wear down the Canadiens. The Bruins are too deep and too talented for Montreal, but even though the Canadiens are the #8 seed, they will not lay down for the Bruins. I expect a very close series, with alot of close games. A Montreal upset would not shock me at all, but Ill take the Bruins to escape here.
PREDICTION: Bruins in 6

#2 Philadelphia Flyers vs. #7 Ottawa Senators
A couple of playoff underachievers lock up here in the First Round and this will be a very good matchup. Ottawa is a team thats difficult to figure out but if they play smart disciplined hockey they can beat the Flyers. Neither team has a spectacular goalie, so which ever team has their goalie step up will have the advantage in this series. The Flyers have crumbled towards the end of season and I think that will continue into this playoff series. This should be another close series that could go either way, but Ill take the Senators here to move on and another year without a Cup for the Flyers. Oh how sad.
PREDICTION: Senators in 6

#3 Carolina Hurricanes vs. #6 New Jersey Devils
There has probably never been a series in any sport where the #6 seed is such a heavy favorite as in this one. If the #3 seed Hurricanes win this series, it would be considered a major upset. And thats exactly what it would be. The Devils are on a roll and are still the team to beat in the East, despite the #6 seed. Carolina was lucky that they snuck in playing in that awful Southeast Division. The Devils actually had more points here, and they certainly will not be intimidated playing in Carolina. The Home Ice will mean nothing as the Devils are a better road playoff team anyway. I see this as the biggest mismatch in the First Round, and this has the best chance of the 8 First Round Series' to end in a sweep. Ill give the Canes a win, but thats it, I would not be surprised if the Devils close them out 4 straight.
PREDICTION: Devils in 5

#4 Toronto Maple Leafs vs. #5 New York Islanders
Islander fans are elated with their end of the season performance and a playoff appearance this year and they have every right to be. In about 2 weeks time, Islander fans might be wishing that the team didnt win its last game of the season and had to play Toronto instead of Carolina. This should be another competitive series, we shall see what the Islanders are made of here in the 2nd season. Intangibles including playoff experience are in favor of Toronto as is the goaltender matchup with Curtis Joseph, as long as he is 100% healthy. If the Islanders are to have a chance in this series, Alexei Yashin must not only completely recover from his injury, but shake off his tendency to dissapear come playoff time. The Islanders will be competitive here, but Toronto will be too much for them, and the Isles season will end at home at the Coliseum.
PREDICTION: Maple Leafs in 6

WESTERN CONFERENCE QUARTERFINALS

#1 Detroit Redwings vs. #8 Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks did a great job of getting into these playoffs and they should all be commended for that. Detroit has been just messing around the last month and are more than ready for the playoffs. I dont think that Dan Cloutier is the type of goalie that can win Vancouver a series here against a powerhouse team like Detroit. Vancouver spent all they could to make it to the post season which seemed very unlikely a month ago. Maybe the Canucks can win a game here, and Ill give them one. But Detroit has just way too much for them.
PREDICTION: Redwings in 5

#2 Colorado Avalanche vs. #7 Los Angeles Kings
This is the best matchup of the First Round. The Kings had a great playoff run last year. They upset the Redwings and then took the Avalanche to 7 games. The Staples Center is rocking for the playoffs and LA is going to be a tough out. The Avs are the defending champs and are still a legit Cup Contender. The Kings are a very good team with alot of talent that will keep things interesting. The things that will edge this series out for Colorado though is the Patrick Roy-Felix Potvin matchup in goal, and the home ice in the potential 7th game. I see this going the distance. This is the series to watch in the 1st Round, it should be a dandy.
PREDICTION: Avalanche in 7

#3 San Jose Sharks vs. #6 Phoenix Coyotes
Give Bob Francis alot of credit, as he is my choice for Coach of the Year. Look at the roster of the Coyotes and then look at the roster of the Stars or Oilers, and you will be wondering how in the world are the Coyotes in the playoffs, and the Stars and Oilers are not. The Coyotes can compete if Sean Burke continues his stellar play in goal, but I think the Sharks are just too deep. The games should be competitive as Burke will keep them in it, but I dont see the Coyotes having much of a shot winning this series.
PREDICTION: Sharks in 5

#4 St. Louis Blues vs. #5 Chicago Blackhawks
Two teams going in different directions come playoff time. The Blackhawks were in the 4 spot a majority of the season, but now find themselves without home ice advantage and without much of a chance in this series. If it wasnt for the shakiness of Brent Johnson in goal, the Blues would be a major contender for the Cup. I dont see the Blackhawks doing much here. I think the Blues are too tough. and Jocelyn Thibault isnt great either, so that makes up for Brent Johnson. Ill take the Blues to sweep here.
PREDICTION: Blues in 4

REST OF THE PLAYOFFS

Eastern Conference Semi Finals
Ottawa over Boston in 6
Toronto over New Jersey in 7

Western Conference Semi Finals
Detroit over St. Louis in 6
San Jose over Colorado in 6

Eastern Conference Finals
Toronto over Ottawa in 5

Western Conference Finals
Detroit over San Jose in 6

Stanley Cup Finals
Detroit over Toronto in 6

2002 Stanley Cup Champions
Detroit Redwings
