O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | I read on espn.com that the Flyers are going to offer Richter a take it or leave it offer of 2 years, 8 million. If the Rangers don't get Joseph, and Richter does not want to come back (would you), they are going after Belfour. Way to take 2 steps back. I would take Richter anyday over Belfour. Way to show some loyalty assholes.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | While it doesn't look good, this is a technical move - if he does sign elsewhere to get compensation. This was in today's Daily News (John Dellapina) quote: Forget Joseph. Rangers are hoping Richter will come back cheap. There is no reason to lock up something like 4 yrs 25 mil when they think Blackburn will play at least 50% a year from now. If Flyers change mind on Richter, he may go there, but I think he'll be back unless he is ticked off. Byron Dafoe better possibillity than Belfor IMO. 2002 Crack Committee Objectives: (modified version)(You gotta try and believe....) 1.Hate the Braves with PASSION and extreme prejudice 1a. O&A Board Veteran Registered: May. 00 | I would have loved to have Joseph as the Rangers goalie next year but it appears he has no desire to play for the Rangers. I think sather is going to put all his eggs in the Guerin/Holik basket and wind up bringing back Kay Whitmore to be the Rangers #1 goalie next year. One guy I hear he also loves is Luke Richardson. The Rangers sure do need some size on defense and Luke fits that bill. Let's hope he doesn't fuck up the goalie situation For the road less traveled ain't for the faint of heart For those who choose to play it safe and never stray too far Me I want to live my life and one day leave my mark And it all might come together And it all come unraveled On the road less traveled

Psychopath Registered: May. 02 | The problem with getting Cujo is that Detroit wants him also. Cujo may take less money in order to play for a legitimate shot at the Stanley Cup. And getting Holik/Guerin will be more difficult without Cujo. They wanted Cujo so they could have a big name goalie so that free agents would want to sign with them. Without Cujo, they have Dafoe and Belfour available. Dafoe will not lead them to the promised land and Belfour is almost at the end of his career.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | Lets get one thing straight. He is not gone from the Rangers. he is a free agent. Edmonton has his rights so that when he signs, Edmonton will get a compensatory draft pick. Edmonton has no intention of keeping him. Until Mike Richter signs a contract with another team, then he is not gone from the Rangers yet. Hopefully Sather will wake up and sign him.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Francine I said I don't think he will go back. I think he will either be in Philly or Toronto. Sather is an asshole and cares nothing about loyalty even though Richter played constantly with surgically repaired knees and the worst defense in all of hockey. Sather only wants him back for less money. I am sure Dafoe or Belfour would even be an option before Sather would try to resign Richter.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | It's not about loyalty; it's about what is best for team. See above where Sather said he would prefer to have Richter back. It just needs to make sense. Cujo should/will not be a Ranger. He will command more money than Richter, and the idea is not to have a big dollar / long contract goalie impeding Blackburn. If Richter costs too much, look for lesser options. As Jody MacDonald put it, would you rather have Holik or Guerin and Dafoe, or Cujo and Tony Amonte? Richter was looking for 6 mil plus. Cujo around 9 mil. let's see how this shakes out, 2002 Crack Committee Objectives: (modified version)(You gotta try and believe....) 1.Hate the Braves with PASSION and extreme prejudice 1a. O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Curtis Joseph is not that much better than Richter. And I would take Richter in a heartbeat over Dafoe or Belfour. Unless they are getting Roy or Joseph back it makes no sense. Richter proved how good he can be around a good team in the Olympics by getting the silver medal. He played amazing against Russia. Sather is an asshole. Without a good goalie, no way in hell do the Rangers Holik or Guerin. The worst case scenario for the rangers is Joseph goes to Detroit and Richter goes to Philly or St. Louis as they have always wanted him. . Than it is Belfour and Dafoe, and the best of those 2 I could see picking someone else besides the Rangers. I have a scary feeling it will be Blackburn and some also ran in nets for the Rangers this year. I do not think Richter will come back now.

Blackburn isn't ready to be a full-time goalie in NY yet, not after a dismal last year, and the defense didn't help either. Richter has experience and he is an All-Star goalie, I hope we sign him...

O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | THE TRIFECTA! Kudos to Mr. Sather, it took you 2 years but your finally doing the job. 3 Months Till Openening Night!! NEW YORK (July 4) -- Goalie Mike Richter agreed to terms Thursday night with the New York Rangers, the only NHL team he has ever played for. Richter, 35, was 24-26-4 in 55 games last season, finishing with a 2.95 goals-against average, a .906 save percentage and two shutouts. Technically, the Rangers are signing Richter away from the Edmonton Oilers, who acquired his rights from New York on Sunday night, just hours before he became an unrestricted free agent. The Oilers will receive a compensatory draft pick that the Rangers would not have been eligible for had Richter signed elsewhere. Injuries have caused Richter, the winningest goalie in Rangers history, to miss 37 games the past two seasons. He needed reconstructive surgery on his left knee after the 2000 season, which caused him to miss the first five games the next season. Then, in February 2001, Richter injured his right knee similarly and missed the final 23 games. After leading the United States team to the Olympic silver medal in the Salt Lake City Games earlier this year, Richter missed New York's final nine games because of a skull fracture sustained when he was struck on the helmet by a shot. The Rangers, who haven't made the playoffs in five years, needed a No. 1 goalie once Richter reached free agency to play in front of 19-year-old Dan Blackburn. Two-way center Bobby Holik and pot-stirring defenseman Darius Kasparaitis signed with New York earlier in the week, leaving goalie as the only major hole left for general manager Glen Sather to fill. "I said all along that I'd like to sign Mike, and we're still going to proceed along with that plan,'' Sather said after signing Kasparaitis. Richter agreed days after two other big-name goalies in the free-agent market were signed by other teams. The Detroit Red Wings signed Curtis Joseph and the Toronto Maple Leafs signed Ed Belfour on Tuesday. Goalie Byron Dafoe, who played for the Boston Bruins last season, is also an unrestricted free agent.

Now with a more improved defense he won't let in as many goals, or atleast shouldn't. I still think we should add to our D but it's definetley better than last year's roster... I'm also surprised he didn't ask for more than $8 million. BTW: Hey look! Ziggy came out of hybernation! 1. 94 Wins and NL East Title by the Mets this year 2. Hate the Braves with a passion 3. I would have hated him to sign with Philly. I cannot believe that Philly did nto aggressively pursue him as Richter is a huge step up from Checmanek. It's better for teh Rangers though. They finally have tough guys and something resembling an NHL defense. As Marion says: LET'S DO IT

Psychopath Registered: May. 02 | As much as it almost pains me, I have to give the Rangers kudos. They did what the Isles did last year - pretty much stole the offseason with their signings. Holik will help, no question. Kasper will help as long as he can avoid taking a lot of bad penalties. And getting Richter back was huge. He is far from a shitty goalie. He was the ONLY reason that on some nights, the Rangers merely lost and didn't get completely blown out. He kept them in a ton of games. But getting a bunch of names doesn't mean anything. They got name players in the past and it didn't do them any good. They have to play as a team. When one guy isn't scoring, someone else has to step up. That was a big problem last year. When a big threat wasn't scoring, nobody would would step up and take the slack. But it looks as if the Rangers have made some right moves. Lets see if it pays off for them in the regular season.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | quote: DarthZiggy, let's not be a poutty Isles fan. Richter has been an all-star, was olympic goalie, and played well (his first after the knee surgery) despite playing behind a horrific defense. He signed a 2 yr deal for 4 mil each, when Toronto signed over-the-hill Belfour for around $7-1/2 Mil. There is no way you can honestly knock this signing. Draft pick? come on. a) it won't be too high, and b) they get compensation on the deal from Edmonton anyway. I don't think Amonte will come to NY (either team) unless his price drops. Rangers now can deal with minor issues (Rucinsky), and see what they look like in camp. By the way, a) No training in MSG - last year they had scrimmages scheduled for Sept 12th-14th, which obviously were cancelled. They felt this year was too early to try it again. b) No more training in Rye - they share a new facility with Knicks in Greenburgh (Westchester) 2002 Crack Committee Objectives: (modified version)(You gotta try and believe....) 1.Hate the Braves with PASSION and extreme prejudice 1a.
