Rodriguez to opt out of contest

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

Rodriguez

SEATTLE -- Texas Rangers shortstop Alex Rodriguez, just one homer shy of the American League lead, says he won't play in the Home Run Derby during Monday's All-Star Game workout at Safeco Field.

Rodriguez will start at shortstop in the All-Star game Tuesday at Safeco Field. He played six seasons in Seattle before signing a record $252 million contract with the Rangers in the offseason.

"I'll take (the Home Run Derby) off, play the game Tuesday night and enjoy that," Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez has 24 homers, one shy of Boston's Manny Ramirez, the league leader. He has already tied Kevin Elster (1996) for the most in a season by a Texas shortstop.

Torre picked SEVEN yankees? wow, i'm a yankee fan and i thought that was a bit much. they all did deserve it except jeter though, his stats really don't fit with the rest of them.

Stanton, Quantrill among AL reserves

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

NEW YORK -- AL manager Joe Torre selected seven of his New York Yankees for next week's All-Star game, including four of the pitchers on his 10-man staff.

Starters Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte were selected Wednesday by Torre along with closer Mariano Rivera, setup man Mike Stanton, shortstop Derek Jeter, outfielder Bernie Williams and catcher Jorge Posada.

San Diego's Tony Gwynn, injured for much of the past 1½ years, wasn't picked for the NL team but was invited as a special guest. Gwynn, a 15-time All-Star, and Baltimore's Cal Ripken, a 19-time All-Star with his election to start at third for the AL, have said they will retire after this season.

While Torre took nearly one-third of the roster of the three-time defending World Series champions, who retook the AL East lead Tuesday, NL manager Bobby Valentine has just two players from the defending NL champion Mets, including Mike Piazza, elected to start at catcher.

"I didn't know they were taking seven guys when I submitted my list," Valentine said. "I had so many things to think about that I probably would have discounted that. I only looked at the first half of the season being that it is this year's All-Star game."

Freddy Garcia and Kazuhiro Sasaki of the Mariners also were picked for the AL staff by Torre, giving the host Mariners six players for Tuesday night's game at Safeco Field.

Eric Milton and Joe Mays of Minnesota are on the AL staff along with Anaheim's Troy Percival and Toronto's Paul Quantrill.

Other AL backup infielders picked were Cleveland's Roberto Alomar, Detroit's Tony Clark, Oakland's Jason Giambi, Anaheim's Troy Glaus, Minnesota's Cristian Guzman and Kansas City's Mike Sweeney.

Chicago's Magglio Ordonez and Tampa Bay's Greg Vaughn also were selected as backup outfielders.

Valentine took 11 pitchers: Atlanta's John Burkett, Colorado's Mike Hampton, Arizona's Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling, Chicago's Jon Lieber, St. Louis' Matt Morris, Los Angeles' Chan Ho Park and Jeff Shaw, Rick Reed of the Mets, Milwaukee's Ben Sheets and Houston's Billy Wagner.

Florida's Charles Johnson is the backup catcher and may start because Piazza has a broken toe.

Piazza hopes to return to the Mets' lineup as a designated hitter this weekend at Yankee Stadium and could be back behind the plate Tuesday.

"I would like to if I can," he said. "We'll just see. I'm leaving everything open."

Selected as the reserve infielders were Sean Casey of the Reds, Ryan Klesko and Phil Nevin of the Padres, Jimmy Rollins of the Phillies and Albert Pujols of the Cardinals.

Backup outfielders include Moises Alou and Lance Berkman of the Astros, Brian Giles of the Pirates, Vladimir Guerrero of the Expos and Larry Walker of the Rockies.

Valentine would have liked to pick more Mets.

"Some guys use it as a reward to your team by bringing guys to the All-Star game after they brought you to the World Series," he said. "I looked at it that way. I wanted to bring all of my guys."

Four Seattle players -- first baseman John Olerud, second baseman Bret Boone, outfielder Ichiro Suzuki and designated hitter Edgar Martinez -- will be in the AL starting lineup, which also includes Texas shortstop Alex Rodriguez, Ripken, Texas catcher Ivan Rodriguez, Boston outfielder Manny Ramirez and Cleveland outfielder Juan Gonzalez.

Elected to start for the NL were Colorado first baseman Todd Helton, San Francisco second baseman Jeff Kent and shortstop Rich Aurilia, Atlanta third baseman Chipper Jones, Piazza, San Francisco outfielder Barry Bonds, Chicago outfielder Sammy Sosa and Arizona outfielder Luis Gonzalez.

How does Mike Stanton get in?? I understand that Quantrill got in cause there has to be at least 1 guy from every team (which is retarded), but Stanton?? 1 middle relief guy in Quantrill is enough. Instead of Stanton, Torre could have selected Radke or LaTroy Hawkins, or even Aaron Sele. By the way, Radke is better than Pettitte.

It really doesnt matter in the long run though, because people will still watch the All Star game, and forget about the snubs when stars like Luis Gonzalez hit a home run during the game. Thats what makes the game so great; the fact that we can argue about the players who are in and not in because there are so many good players to begin with.

Yea i be taking that zoloff, but thaz jus keepin me from killin y'all.

that was 2 years ago.

At least Hampton cant hit a Homerun in an AMerican League Park.

Jeter on the squad is a joke, and Andy Pettite should not be there instead of Aaron Sele who is 9-1. Torre and all the Yankees are going to get booed heavily in Seattle.

Well, I'll give it up.
The 7 Yanks are payback for the lack of AllStars they've had over the last five years. For 4 World Series, they have had very few All-Stars. Torre sees the run is over, and so he's closing all the "deals" now, while he can.
Jeter and Petitte are stretches, but only in 2001 terms. If Guzman wasn't there it'd be= more awful.
The Mets got f'ed b/c Alfonzo and Payton spent so much time on the DL. I have no excuse for Leiter.
Btw, Radke blew it the last 5 starts...

Why not. Besides Jeter they all deserve it and Jeter is a better choice than Valentin or Tejada. Stanton defintely deserves it. He is one of the top setup men in all of baseball and has been doing a great job and this is his first appearance in 12 years. Do you think the Yankees win 3 in a row without him. This was a thank you gift by Torre. Besides Seattle has 4 starters. I dont care if they win 130 games. They have to beat the Yankees in the playoffs to say they are the better team. No one will beat the yankees come October.

Fuck that stupid asshole, Jeff Nelson. See you in the playoffs deek.

Pettite 8-4 2.95 ERA. Brad Radke 9-4 3.76 ERA

Pettite one of the most clutch pitchers in playoff history.

There are about 20 Outfielders in the National LEague who would go to an All Star Game before Jay Payton even at his healthiest.

This fucking all star selection better be changed by next year. The Yanks couldn't even come into first place in their division yet they get all the selections. Theres a reason why theres no Yanks starting, they didnt deserve it! Theres no way in hell there should be more Yanks, a team that sucks this year until Steinbrenner buys the championship, than the league-leading Mariners. Not a single Sox player was selected by Torre even though we were better than the Yankees the whole half of the year. We've all had enough of this bias shit, the game should be a place to honor the BEST players for the first half of the year, not the players who got to the series last year.

Name one person on Boston that should replace any of the Yankees. Your only shots were Pedro and Nomar and they are both injured. The only good Red Sox made the All Star team. The only team with a gripe is Seattle and I can't wait to meet thiese mother f'rs in the playoffs..
