Back to the top. It's still floating around, so everyone should at least be aware of it.

Trust me, there's no such thing as a virus that takes out hardware. Blebla.B is kinda nasty, but whoever told you that it couldn't be cleaned and that your hardware was fucked up - they took you for a ride, my friend.

Blebla.B moves files (system files and many others) to the Recycle Bin upon running them, and replaces the original file with itself. It also emails itself to everyone in your Outlook contact list using its own emailer, not Outlook's. I say Blebla.B because that's the one that does the real damage - Blebla simply does emailing.

If you don't believe me, go to:

Blebla.B write-up on www.sarc.com

and see for yourself.

Viruses don't screw up hardware, unless they intentionally target a certain thing (there is such a thing as a virus that will flash your BIOS - this would make booting impossible unless you replace the BIOS chip) but nothing can take out a CD-ROM.

With Blebla.B, even if you had a worst-case scenario, a simple format would have done the trick.

simple to do the format, but ridiculously painful to restore everything just the way you like it - unless you backup everything, of course (learned my lesson the hard way once - never again!)

What about viruses that attack the master boot record. Those are nasty little buggers.

Master Boot Record is easily fixed - go get Norton Utilities or Norton SystemWorks. Comes with Emergency Disks. On them is NDD.EXE - Norton Disk Doctor for DOS. Can fix an MBR in no time flat.

Also there's a little undocumented switch on Microsoft's FDISK.EXE... type "fdisk /mbr" at the prompt and it rebuilds the MBR.

I tell ya, working for Symantec fucking ROCKED.

Thanks FTL i never actually got a virus like that but is always good to be informed. Actually I have never been infected with a virus. Maybe it's because I NEVER OPEN ATTACHMENTS. Last time I did I was on the phone with the person that sent it and asked them about it.

Opening attachments isn't a bad thing in itself, you just have to know what to look for. Stuff like a WAV or a GIF or JPG can never be harmful - they can't work that way, ever. The main things to watch for are VBS and EXE files. Those you probably want to look into unless you're sure before they get to you.... and that's just for EXE's.... VBS's are never EVER good cause no one uses them for a practical purpose.

When I was on Bearshare I have seen files with .mp3.vbs extensions. It is important to watch out because people may open a jpeg.vbs without reading the whole thing.

FTL,
Thanks for the info. The link was very informative, maybe I can now revive the infected unit, and have a second computer.
You're right, the CD drive was off and on anyway, and probably not affected. And yes I did get very bad advice. But it was a '95 unit, and I love the new one.
Chalk it up. Thanks for your help. :-)

Thanks Filzy!

Yeah, this virus was pretty nasty. I won't say what I do for a living, but it might involved networks and sysadmin. My wife called me at work and said, I have a file from someone I can't open. I walked her right through opening it. When she said nothing was happening when she open it "OH SHIT!!!" was the only thing that came to mind. I was able to fix it, and with a Linux dual boot could keep on going even while Windows was down.
Sgt. Krusty, I think it was just time for a new Windows box for you anyway. Once some of the hardware starts to go and then you have to format, a new machine looks better by the minute.
Hey, FTL, I thought that some viruses could target sectors on the hard drice, spin the drive super fast while hitting specific locations for requests until the sectors go bad. Then just work it way around the drive. Agreed, it won't take out a CD drive though.

Sorry for bringing this to the top again, folks, but I haven't really looked at the board since Friday morning, and I have one thing to talk about...

Hadn't heard about that, but it sounds like a hoax to me. Drives really can't spin any faster than they were designed to. If you've got a 5400RPM drive, that's how fast it spins. No virus is going to make that little motor go any faster than 5400RPM, cause it physically can't do it. I suppose it's possible to write and re-write the same sector over and over, but it would take a hell of a lot of writes to make it go bad. And to get that many writes to the same sector, all in a row, in Windows, is probably impossible. It's so hard to lock the drive so other programs can't use it in a multi-tasking environment like Windows.

And Krusty... yeah man, get a new CD-ROM, format the bitch, throw on 98SE or 2000 and you've got yourself a nice little box. :)

That's cool. I had talked with someone about that. Didn't mean spin it faster then 5400, just keep it there and pound on certain sectors, ie. the MBR. Burn that out and you're screwed.

Better yet, format it and put Linux on it and you got a nice home network server.

I hate windows more and more everyday. The other day I reloaded it to correct some DLL problems and it overwrote sections of my Linux partition and I had to reload that as well. I was reloading because of this virus. Man that sucked.
