I'm definitely not going to see it, when we have a babysitter I'd rather do something more social than see a movie, and besides, I'm sick of kid movies even if this one is just as good for adults. All I ever see are kid movies, and even Toy Story gets old the 100th time around :)

I've never had an interest in Harry, but my mother - who doesn't care for anyone who's not in her immediate family - has read a few of the books, and has only good things to say about them. That makes me think the series might not be that bad. So, I'll be taking her to see it.

I'll be seeng it. I've never read the books, and don't have any kids, but that really isn't a factor. It just looks like a good movie, so why not?

Still more psyched for LOTR, though...

I caught an early loop due to the nice weather today and made a 1pm showing...half empty theater (or in this case theatre) and only a few kids whose parents got them out of school early...$5.50 and worth every penny...if you read the book.

Columbus' editing leaves something to be desired, too quick and choppy. Effects are very good, especially Quidditch match. For fans of the series, it is not exactly faithful to the book, but then again, no movie ever is. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but my feeling is you should read the book first to really understand it...it moves fast and non-initiates will have questions when watching it. See it anyway, it's worth it...

New Star Wars trailer is great, Natalie Portman looks gorgeous.:) LOTD is my most anticipated film ever...

I love movies like this.I really want to see this one. I love any kind of "kid's" movie. I'm a freak for Nightmare Before Christmas, Toy Story, all of that stuff. I'm pissed because I haven't had the time to go see Monsters Inc. Waaaaahhhh!!

I've read all the books and am eagerly awaiting the fifth installment, but I think I'll pass on the movie till it comes out on DVD. I'd rather enjoy the movie in the comfort of my own home than in a theatre chockful of kids.

Well I just got back from seeing it and I have to say, it was pretty good. The effects are very well done. I agree with Danny on one aspect, the quidditch match was incredible. I liken it to the speeder race in Phantom. Just as fast pace and very exciting and graphically incredible. The story was well done as well. I didnt read the book but I didnt feel lost at all at any point in the movie. All in all it was a very enjoyable movie, one of the better ones I've seen in a while. As for the previews, the theater I was at didnt show the Star Wars trailer. Very disppointing I must say. There were a couple of "kids" type trailers. Johnny neutron or something or other. Some Tim Allen movie that looks like the rest of his movies that arent Galaxy Quest. But there was one very good trailer I havent seen yet. It focuses on a big mansion and goes inside. The announcer talks about a hero who is always there for us. Protects us when we need it and saves the world when we need him too. Pan away to a shadow that looks a hell of a lot like batman, the camera pans back and its...Scooby Doo. In what looks like all his CGI glory. Very well done too. I was convinced it was some sort of Batman promo, maybe from Batman Beyond or something like it but it wasnt. Anyway all in all it was a good movie experience.

I took my son and his girlfriend to see it tonite (7:30 show). Theater was packed, but all the kids were quiet and well-behaved. I thought the movie was good...not great...but good. I've read all four books and really enjoyed them, so I'm sure it was a matter of the movie not quite living up to the expectations from the book, and not that the movie was sub-par.

The thing that I found interesting was that all the characters looked exactly how I had pictured them in my head. That never happens to me!

A scene toward the end might be a little scary for some really young viewers, but on the whole, I think it would appeal to most people.

**Edit** I got my tickets about a week and a half ago thru moviefone.

I saw the trailer online and the fact that they used the DAnny Elfman Batman theme could have helped in this belief. Last I heard Batman Beyond was cancelled because making the entire future world and everything would just be too expensive. Also that's fucking BS they didn't show teh SW trailer, it's online anyhoo.

I guess, when I posted that, I was thinking of my parents going to see it next week and they're almost 70...not quite as sharp as they used to be...maybe they'll surprise me and be pleasantly surprised themselves.

BTW, the next three books are also good movie material. Oddly, at least to me, another company got the bid for the special effects for the next one, Chamber of Secrets.

That's good, because for a minute, I thought you wanted to see Michael Flatley in Lord of the Dance.

I saw Waking Life and was thoroughly disappointed. The movie, itself, was nothing.

For those who dont' know what it's about, it's people talking philosophy. That's it. nothing more, nothing less. random people you don't care about discussing philsophy.

the thing is you don't want to criticize it because if you do, you might be looked at as someone who isn't deep enough to get it. And fine, I'll admit it. I am not deep enough to get and appreciate this movie.

I have nothing against philsophy. sometimes its interesting to talk about the meaning of the universe with others but this movie, it just gets dull. there's a couple of interesting points in the film and point made but you quickly forget as other characters spout Philsophy 101.

I have nothing against 'deep' films but there's a difference between films that make you think with its subtext and films where the subtext IS the text.

Yes the animation was cool, though sometimes it got grating, you appreciated what Linklater was going for. It's good to see a personal, original project like this in theaters. However even all the animation in the world does not hide the fact that this movie is just pretentious.

And no, I've never seen Slacker. Maybe that's my mistake.

Go and see it. It rocked!!! Very cool effects & good storyline (hey, if it kept my 7 and 9 year old rivited to the screen, it must have been good).. I had to go to the bathroom really bad, but I was afraid I would miss something.

It really doesn't feel like it runs 2 1/2 hours.
The only complaint I have is I felt the end of the movie was a bit rushed and I didn't want to see Harry go back to that awful family (even if it was only for summer break, or whatever...).

I saw the movie, and enjoyed it thoroughly; however, I've also read the books.

The O&Aswallow comparison to Toy Story was a good one; While the story apeals to children (mostly 9-14), it also is smart enough for adults. The special effects were good, the acting generally good (including some big time performances by veteran actors). Those of you who are concerned with children in the theater, the answer is simple - go see a late showing.

Should you read the book first? always a good question with adaptations. My wife saw it with me and she had no trouble following the story line with out having read the book. However, it did probably mean more to me, since I read the book and looked forward to seeing how it was on screen. Again, think of those people who saw Empire strikes back as their first SW movie vs those who were waiting for the sequel.

There will be 7 books (one for each year he is in school), and there is expected to be a movie for each book, although the actors are only committed to the first two. They plan on shooting them sequentially, almost one a year, so that the (young)actor's ages won't be a factor.
FWIW, I think the first book is weak compared to some of the others (especially the fourth). There was a lot of foundation laid down. The movie went out of its way to be faithful to the books, so they didn't combine stuff from book 1 and 2, or reveal stuff that will happen later on.

Length of movie is a funny thing; It moves well for 2-1/2 hours, but there are people I know who were dissapointed that some things were left out.
