Psychopath Registered: Jan. 01 | Movies like Fight Club, Books like On the Road, Music with heartfelt lyrics like Dashboard Confessional, meeting people from different places, drugs, sex. All of these sorts of things really make me think and asess myself and those around me. When I lay in bed at night, I can find myself thinking about all sorts of things. Usually I have to sleep with the tv or stereo on to distract me otherwise my thoughts would never let me sleep.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | My suggestion to clear minds of issues and thoughts before and after sleeping is meditation. I used to suffer from insomnia until I did some mind-clearing relaxation techniques, which, after much use, has been an automatic when sleep is concerned. Meditation or self-hypnosis tends to clear the mind. One of the ones I learned is counting backwards from 100, picturing the number in your mind and drawing a box around each number. By the time I hit 50 or so, I'm pretty relaxed and most-times can't even get past 40...b/c I've pretty much fell asleep. Trying to listen for your pulse, which is prevelent all over your body is another relaxing technique. Neck, legs, arms...you can actually sense and feel the blood flow. Self-hypnosis is something I learned very young, so for me, all I do is count back from 10, willing myself to relax, and I'm pretty much putty. I can make myself think my limbs cannot move, and basically will my muscles to relax. I use this during high pressure situation where I am physically and mentally exhausted. By using self-hypnsosis, you bring up the subconscious and the subconcious is a powerful thing. WALK! That's right walk. Take a walk every night for about a half hour around your neighborhood, alone and not on the cell phone. Walking gets the body active, relaxes the mind, and will let some of those deep-set issues and thoughts come to the top, rather than pop out when you try to sleep. A more medicinal way is Valerian Root or using Melatonin. Melatonin is an over the counter pill that promotes the seratonins in your body to be produced (which happens when you sleep). Melatonin is good to use to get into sleep habits, and is also is good "winter depression" solution. I used to walk every night and then take Melatonin, and slept like a baby. Bottomline: most sleep problems and getting your mind to relax all stems from inability to cope with stress. I know alot of people on this board who all have sleeping and stress problems, especially in these troubled times... Stress management, therapy, meditation, walking and just plain taking time to just relax are key things here. Good luck. This message was edited by TheGooch on 11-27-01 @ 12:12 PM

Psychopath Registered: Sep. 01 | For me the only thing that's stop me from thinking/worrying is running with a walkman on and the music cranked up or taking an aerobics class w/the music cranked up - it seems the harder my body works the less my mind does. It also makes for good sleeping (just don't do it right before bed)

Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | I said it before and now again, in every thread about books, wether the ones i started about what are you reading or the what is your fav book thread. Always I have said Crime & Punishment is the greatest novel ever written in my estimation and personal opinion. I have read the book atleast 15 times actually I just re-read it last month. I always reccomend it to anyone, it trully is a masterpiece. If you are also interested in another classic by Dostoyevsky try "the Brothers Karamazov" Also a classic but a bit tougher of a read especially the dream sequences but highly reccomended. As far as other russian authors ofcourse tolstoy but i prefer the works of Pushkin. As far as what makes me think or revaluate things, mostly it comes from other people but as far as artsitically i would have to say music. The first time I listened to "a day in the life" by the beatles or little wing by hendrix but the biggest turning points came from jazz and classical music. The first time I listened to Miles Davis & Coltrane really affected me as much as the first time I listened to rachmaninov's 3rd symphony and Mozarts Don Giovani. Then definetly the biggest influence other than my reaction to and with people is movies. Like I have said before nothing influences me more than films. Many of my opinions and views don't really come from film but are inspired by them, meaning that I saw something and it sparked my interest in learning more about it and absorbing it all. Like the first time I saw east of eden with james dean, casablanca, the hustler, hud, the third man, the godfather, schindlers list, ect etc. I'm Deep Inside Your Children. I found I constantly go over the same things, and that writing them down will help me see my pattern. Plus, I don't have to bore someone else with "that again." To think.... music, sitting alone, either combined with pot or without. I think at work, at home, driving, trying to sleep... hehehe... I remember the other part... when doing the "heavy, pot think" I get really into it and think I've solved something, but then I also tend to forget what it was I decided... and have to do it again, of course. :) This message was edited by heyladiladi on 11-27-01 @ 12:53 PM
