Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | quote: That's what books are for, jeez. In 1938 a russian named Igor Sikorsky and the US goverment came to an agreement. The US gave Sikorsky a 2 million dollar budget for rotary wing research. The government ended up choosing a joint Sikorsky-Vought effort to be funded, and the project evolved into the VS-300 model helicopter. It formed the most tangible link between the early design concept of rotary-wing aviation and the practical aircraft that is capable of military operation. It wasn't the first helicopter actually but it was the first modern helicopter. The first use of a helicopter in combat came in may of 1944 when it was flown by a pilot assigned to the 1st Air Commando group. After the engagement the commanding officer wrote, to a friend in the states, "Today the 'egg-beater' went into action and the damn thing acted like it had good sense!" Shortly thereafter the AAF ordered another 100 R-4Bs. The first time helicopters were used extensively in war was during the Korean War. During the war the ability of the helicopter to perform front-line air-medical evacuation was directly responsible for a decrease in the number of soldiers that died from wounds they received in combat.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Not to burst any bubbles, but one of the first movies Mel made was a WWII movie Attack Force Z . Back in the day I loved that flick. Perhaps Mel does make a lot of war movies, but you gotta admit, they are all pretty fucking good flicks, and Braveheart is one of my three of four favorites of all time. AIM
