I have 2 HD's on my machine - a 13 gig and a 60 gig. I partitioned the 60 gig out to two (2) 303 gig "drives" - one is C, the other is E (the 13 gig is my D drive - don't know why, thats just the way it ended up.

Would it be possible to copy all of my essential files off of the C drive onto the other partition (E in this case), format the C portion, and install XP there? I figure I could give it a trial run this way, without having to format/partition the whole physical drive again, and it would save me time making backups of my current C drive onto CD's (I have more than enough room on the partition as well as the other physical drive.)

I'm on 98SE now, but three of my neighbors have moved onto XP (via upgrade - I plan on doing a clean full install), and they love it. I went to one of their houses over the weekend, and it looks pretty cool, nothing crashed depite the amount of crap I was running. My other concern is the availability of XP drivers for my hardware (CD burner, scanner, pc-cam, printer, etc.), but I can check that via the web.

Any thoughts? I just wanna give it a test run without having to go through the format/partition/reinstall of everything I have. I even considered trying a dual-boot config, but if XP is as good as they say it is, I don't think I'll be needing to use 98SE anymore (I don't use apps or games that need DOS requirements anymore, so that would be the only reason I might want to still use 98SE).

Putting all your data on a seperate partition should work just fine.

Alright, i got this version. But i need to know, is this the upgrade or full install version? I want the full install, because i would rather format my HDD and do a clean install. It's the XP Pro edition.

The version I have seen is called the "Golden Code", build 2600 - it has a crack on it that gets around the product activation thing. It mentions something about not connecting to the internet for updates upon installation, then running it, answering another "no" to another question, and you're home free - no more activation. I don't know if it works though. It is also the XP Pro version.

I have the warez version 2624 DO NOT GOTO MICROSOFT UPDATE PAGE!! If you do after it installs the updates when you restart it says "Product activation trial has expired" and you cant get into your machine, you will have to reformat your drive and install either your warez XP or whatever Os you were using before..Its a huge pain in the ass

Then I don't see the point of using a cracked or WaReZ version of it - as good as everyone is saying it is, you know it will need a service pack release of some kind in a few months (if it doesn't already), at which point makes any cracked version pointless to use. I'm thinking of pulling some strings and just going the legit route and buying it for a heavily discounted price. Updates and Microsoft go hand in hand, no matter how good their code is.

Seph you can do the full install. It can do either . But you can only upgrade from NT/2000 if you have Pro. If you have ME you can only update to Home.

Oh and the corporate version will get past activation.

Far be it for me to disagree with you AM, but my neighbor upgraded from ME to Pro no problem last week - using the version I mentioned in my thread above - his doesn't say Devil's Own version, but its the full Pro version nonetheless. I would recommend a full install anyway, upgrading always leaves artifacts around, which means more conflicts down the road.

EDIT : Upon further research, I found out that what Tubesteak said regarding going to Windows Update was very true - it will catch the crack, and leave the OS unuseable, etc...However, by simply going to the Microsoft site, you can download all of the patches and fixes manually, and install them the same way. I also am a fan of Updates.com. It scans your entire machine, and recommends any and all updates that you might want/need to get for all of your software as well as hardware - so updating shouldn't be a problem.

That is the information I heard yes - when you go to the Windows Update page (via the Start Menu), it scans you PC - usually for the version of Windows that you're running. I would think that somehow they get you for using a cracked version - and you will have to reformat/reinstall Windows again. The best way is to either download the updates yourself via Microsoft.Com (assuming you know which ones you need), or go to the link I posted above to Updates.com - that link usually posts updates through Download.com, so MS doesn't know what your'e getting, and for what reason :) Plus, its stable as hell - Windows Update almost always locks up or gives me some "installation failed" message.

If its the warez version then yes, Microsoft did this to combat all the cracked Beta versions,it should be fine as long as you dont do the windows updates.

It could be a different version that does this - I'm just going by what my neighbor did.

Provided you avoid the Windows Update link, you'll be fine - should you need a patch or something, just go to the links I put up. I'm gonna give it a try this weekend, and I'll post how things (applying any and all updates).

Someone should just rename this thread to the "Cracked Windows XP FAQ".

Its not something that runs automatically or in the background. Its a manual link set up in the Start Menu. If you're paranoid about hitting it, you can always right click on the shortcut in the Start Menu and delete it - however, even if you click the link the update doesn't start until you click on the "product updates" link on that page. The bets paert is that it says "no informatiuon is being sent to Microsoft" - if thats the case, how do they know to disable a cracked version? Either way, avoid the link, and apply updates manually - you should be good to go WB.

I've been checking around and the Windows Update thing apparently doesn't work on the Devilown's release. If you are feeling extra paranoid you could always use a proxy.

Feel free to share the knowledge Bartman. I'm planning on upgrading this weekend - I needed to a few apps that won't run on XP which I currently use (NSW, new vid drivers, etc.) Not ONE person I have spoken to who is using XP has had a negative thing to say about it (other than the GUI interface - a friend of mine likes the classic WIN look, but thats an option in the setup, so no big deal there.

I finally got it going this weekend - so far so good. I've updtaed it with a few security patches (go figure) that were lacking, but otherwise, a fairly simple install. The only thing I don't like is the lack of Icons on the desktop (I had all my shit there, easy to find). Only trouble I am having is with my EZCD Creator and my Gamepad - no XP drivers for it yet, and I didn't bother to see if the 98 drivers would work (they might I hear).

Its stable as hell tho - I had one program lock up, and it calmly told me it was not responding, should I cancel it? I said yes, off it went - no blue screen - nice!
