O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | quote: There are pros and cons to both options. My opinion : If youre fairly adept and handling/installing/configuring/troubleshooting hardare and software, I would say go for the custom build - you'll probably spend less and feel a lot better about the system since you put what you want in it. However, your warranties are limited to the warranty of each individual component, so if something should break down, it becomes your responsibility (and sometimes some more of your cash) to get a replacement and/or a resolution. When you buy a system aside from paying for the name, you're also buying a warranty on the system as a whole at the time of purchase - even if you pay a litlt more of a 3-yr extended deal. If you're not too comfortable handling parts and installing/troubleshooting things, I would go this route. When I got my PC 3 years ago, I knew shit about computers - I barely knew Windows, and my main concern was "how do I play games?". I bought a Dell, and honestly it has been a joy. Sure a few things broke down (had the MoBo replaced recently, the CD-Rom drive died, etc.) but it was under warranty, so they not only replaced the parts, but they came to the house to do it for me. Rather than just let them in, let them do their thing and leave, I always watched them to learn how to do it myself in the event it hapenned again - plus in talking to people (much like here on the board) I have learned a hell of a lot about computers, so I feel I'm more comfortable in building a new one for myself. Prices are so low onmost machines these days, its almost silly not to buy a new one - the smart way to do it is buy a bare bones special - like a $799 Dell or something, and get all the extras you want on the side - this way when the computer comes, its under warranty, and you can install all the goodies you like - and chances are it would be cheaper than if you bought the PC with all the goodies from the company direct. Will they cover your warranty? If you put something in and it screws up the machine, you can always say "I don't know what hapenned" and remove whatever caused the problem and they'll take care of it for you (so I have heard ;)) My comp is smoking except for the vid card, but I'm working on that - I'd buy another Dell if I had the available cash (to start a snall home network), but I would do the bare-bones deal since I know a lot more about installing hardware and apps and I could put them on whenever I felt like - plus most OEM hardware do not include a lot of options and aspects that an aftermarket product might (like an OEM vid card vs. an aftermarket card bundled with games, stable overclockability, etc.) You can reach me through AIM or email. O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | While I've never put together a system from scratch, I have changed almost all components. The PIII I'm using now was a computer that was lying around work, because they said it was fried. I took out everything except the motherboard and re-installed my old components. It turned out the video card was shot, and the power supply fan didn't always go on. I enjoy updating components, but I don't know if It's worth the potential hours of debugging the conflicts that it might take me. that's why it takes me forever to make up my mind :)

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I just wanted to update that I picked up an Xstacy GeForce3 Ti500 over the weekend at a comp fair (paid $280 after haggling with the guy), and this card is absoilutely amazing! Yeah, its bare bones and doesn't come with any games, but I've got enough (and will have more soon). My games have never moved this fluid - and though it gets a little hot, the fan/heatsink combo on the card keep it cool enough that you can tough it (My GF2 MX card used to get super hot - never locked up on me though). If you've got the green I highly recommend this board - if not, the Ti200 is the way to go. You can reach me through AIM or email. Don't be shy, drop a line and say Hi!

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Well in everyone DirecTV receiver there is a card. This card tells you what programs to get, etc. Well Hackers found a way to have you get all the programs. But DirecTV from time to time is able to scramble the cards so I use a emulator(which sends the satelite info to the card which is connected to a reader on my computer) and a wire going to the satelite reciever. It makes an exact image of it and DirecTV can't scramble it all. And I just got a 900 Mhz T-Bird, 128 megs of ram, and a 40 gig hd. It has onboard video but I'm not using it that much so not bad. Psychopath Registered: May. 00 | yeah, u sell them to tools who know JACK SHIT about computers... i bet the majority of ur sales were to schools and the average consumer who is retarded when it comes to computers. gateway isn't the worst company to buy a computer from... in fact, they all suck xcept for Dell who provides ok quality for a rather high price. and wtf is up w/ that GAY 'restore' program whenever u boot up... i HATE those. Psychopath Registered: Dec. 00 | I'm a Gateway user and am far from being someone who knows jack shit. Granted I don't as much as some of you, but I know enough to do more than just get by. FrigginAnt, gateway still uses that 2 year upgrade program right? Cause I get to upgrade in October if they still have that feature. I thinkin about building my own system, but at the time i wasn't as proficient as I am now. But as of now, I'll stick with Gateway cause now I am too lazy to build my own system. :) Click here to check out my band "The saddest thing in life is wasted talent" -Machiavelli-

Psychopath Registered: Sep. 00 | 2 year upgrade policy.. That is gateways way of getting a bunch of cash up front so in 2 years they tell you to buy a new computer becasue your old one is too old to upgrade. :) I'm in middle of fully upgrading again so I'llpost my machine when I'm done.. Waiting on GF4 Ti 4600 to come out next month. :)
