Last night, i accidentally de-selected the Sys-Tray option when i was configuring my selective start-up. What is the normal way to remedy this? Windows wont start if Sys-tray doesnt start.

Woah boy was that a bitch to fix.

Clarify that for me just a little bit, what do you mean by "selective startup" - you mean the option in Safemode? (What OS etc.)

OS = Windows ME. (please done hit me)

Selective Start-up = Run "Msconfig" in the Run dialog box, and you can pick and choose which programs begin when the computer Boots. I learned the hard way that if you remove Sys-tray, you remove the program that boots windows at start-up.

Hmm, does it just sort of hang there though, or does it give you an error? If it just hangs, you can try hitting ctrl-alt-del and start a new task. For the new task type "systray.exe" (or even better use the browse button to get where the file is actually located).

I wanna hit you anyway.

As far as the Systray problem goes, I've removed it before and have never really seen a problem, so right off the bat this seems a bit weirder than it looks on the surface. What error did you get when you booted Windows without it?

Oh - and the easy way to put it back... start Windows in Safe Mode, then go back into MSCONFIG and change it back. Safe Mode does not run ANYTHING from the registry's Run key (which is where the Systray you unchecked is located).

For you wacky registry editors, that key is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run - if you really wanted to know.

And as far as Linux goes - if it came pre-installed on PC's, as Windows does now, people would just use it. Your average idiot who has never bought a computer before will really never know the difference, as long as it's pre-configured to get on the Internet.

But in reality, if you really want to use Linux to its true potential, you have to be a power user.

In all honesty, though, the same can be said with Windows.
