Its amazing how when your playing well, the breaks always go your way.

During the vast majority of the season, the Mets couldnt buy a break. Now they are getting breaks left and right.

Like the Todd Zeile run on Monday Afternoon against Philly. Or Today against Florida, a certain Double Play ball by Ventura, they throw the ball into the Outfield, setting up the tying and go ahead runs. And then The Insurance run in the 9th, on Piazza's hit that Gonzalez and Floyd let land in between them.

A series of tragic and life altering events change life as we know it forever. Baseball, an afterthought to all that has gone on, resumes in earnest. The game must go on, in hopes that the games might life the spirit of a nation in mourning. In Pittsburg, a team with a dream resumes their miracle mission and pull off another magic trick with a win and a Braves loss.

In the darkest of hours, you find a glimmering spark of light. Miracles do happen, and a Subway Series in New York once again is still improbable but one step closer to being possible.

What better way to revive this shaken city with a rematch of their hometown heros. Wearing hats to represent the real heros who gave their lives and playing in their honor, what could be a more fitting tribute?

7 games back, BELIEVE!

I don't like the Mets, but I give them lots of credit for wearing the hats. I am hoping they get in now. I want a Subway Series 2

Guys...

Six games out with SIX GAMES REMAINING AGAINST THE
BRAVES.

What an amazing thing the Mets could do for this broken
city by getting in.

(I'm no Yankee lover, but Who didn't cry watching Mazilli
saluting last night?)

I don't know who heard Ant read one particular Instant
Feedback last week, but that was me that's going to six
funeral services, the first being today.

I don't know if I have any tears left.

Peace to everyone. God Bless our Country.

If the mets can do this, would it be the greatest comeback in sports history?

"When the Mets return to New York for what is certain to be an emotional night Friday, they'll have a surprise gift for their fans: a pennant race."

-ESPN.com

Can you believe it? 5 games back! Its still a monumental task ahead of them, but the Mets have a history of making miracles happen.

Mike Francesa, rah rah Yankee Fan, noted on the FAN today that this would indeed be the greatest comeback in the history of baseball if the Mets could pull it off.

I don't know if they're gonna do it but at least its making this a meaningful September for the team, even more so with the events of last week.

This is a team with a purpose, inspired to win not only to pull off a tremendous miracle but more importantly to honor those we lost and those who continue to work so hard for this great country.

BELIEVE!!!

They already set a record of sorts - most games between .500 record in one season.

"It was April 6, a Friday night in Montreal.

The Mets lost that night North of the Border, falling to 2-2 just four days into the season. The significance of that night -- it was the last time Bobby Valentine's team was at .500.

Then came Tuesday night at PNC Park. New York rallied for a 7-5 victory, marking the first time it has seen the break-even point since that early April evening. In taking 141 games to return to the .500 mark, Team Valentine set a new Major League record for games needed to return to the break even-point, eclipsing the mark set by Detroit in 1997. It also breaks the NL mark of 135 set by the Phillies in 1985."

Im glad that the Phillies have taken these first 3 games from the Braves and thats what I wanted and Ive been pulling for them.

But tomorrow I think it might be better for us if the Braves win.

If the Braves win the Mets are:

4 behind the Phillies
5 1/2 behind the Braves

If the Phillies win The Mets are:
4 1/2 behind the Braves
5 behind the Phillies.

The Mets have these 6 games with the Braves, and if they are going to do this, they have to pound the Braves and take at least 5 of 6. So They can make up those games there.

You dont want to get too far behind the Phillies. But the bottom line is, if the Mets continue to play the way they have been and they take care of Atlanta and win at least 5 out of 6, and then dont choke against inferior teams like Pittsburgh and Montreal, the way they choked it away in 98. They might do this.

Francine well put...With the braves and phills playing each other 7 times obvi someone no matter what would win 4 games....They just need to keep winning and not worry about either of those 2 now when they are playing each other..i pray for the mets to have a chance....It would be bitter sweet after this past week

On September 3rd, 2001 I said....

If the Mets can just pull within 4 to 5 games of Atlanta before the 21st I think they will have a fighting chance to pull off one hell of a miracle.

Well ladies and gentlemen, its Sept 20th and we are 5 games back. I think we've got a fighting chance to pull it off.

Lets win 5 of 6 from the Braves starting with sweeping this series at Shea. We've got the momentum and spirit of New York in our favor.

BELIEVE!

Too little, too late. As impressive as this late-season surge has been, i don't think they can pull it off.

On the other hand, the Yankees magic number is now at 2!!!

The Mets were an out away from pulling of a stunning, amazing sweep of the Braves. We took 2 out of 3, 5 of 6 was the plan all along so lets not hold our heads too low. I still believe in miracles, do you?

BELIEVE!

I think it is now over. Especially the Braves and Phillies play each other, so someone has to win at least 2 out of 3. They had their chance but Benitez blew it.

As much as i am hanging my head in utter disappointment and heartbreak, i have to continue to believe that we can do this. I know sweeping the Braves in atlanta is improbable, but so was this run we've had. I will continue believing in this team until we are mathematically eliminated.

If we cant make it, neither can the Braves, so we will eliminate them in that series in atlanta, even if he have no chance to win the division.

We need a big week out of the Marlins this week. They have 4 games against the Braves and then 3 against Philly all at home.

The Marlins arent a bad team at all. They have good pitching and they have been a Very Good Home Team this year.

If the Mets can take care of business, they still have a chance.

The thing that is heartbreaking here is that if they got that out against Atlanta, and Florida got their out against Philly.

The Mets would have won this Division.

I was there yesterday.
This is what it is to be a Met's fan (or Ranger Fan, or Jets fan...)
I didn't want to believe. I knew logically it was impossible.... Just play well, just play well.....
And then it happened. Long Fly to left. Probably going to be a double, maybe even out of here and game would be tied. All of a Sudden Shinjo makes an excellent catch. OK, two outs, but runner on 3rd right? No Wait !! he's out at third !! This must be a sign. It's finally time to believe..........

2 outs in 9th inning. Scoreboard reads Marlins 4, Phillies 3. Only 2-1/2 back. Crowd starts to do sarcastic tomahawk chop. No ! Don't do that! don't tempt the baseball gods!!!!!

To late. Bad pitch 1 -> 4-3 Mets.
bouncing ball up the middle -> 4-4 game.
Bad Pitch 2..........
it's all over. Silence.

To all the non-BELIEVEers...

You didn't believe when we were 13 1/2 games back, I don't expect you to now. This is a team that won the World Series in 86 after being down to their final strike.

"The best has not happened yet. It's part of the future."
– Manager Bobby Valentine to The Daily News about the Mets' strong play and chances to make the playoffs

"They have a darned good chance of catching the two teams ahead of them," John Smoltz, still worried about the Mets after Sunday's game.

"I still believe that something could happen. We seem to find a way. I still believe we'll find a way." - Al Leiter

4 games back, 12 to play

Like Yogi said....

"It ain't over til its over!"

I hate the Mets, and I'm usually very harsh to them and their fans...but watching them in the last wekk or so has been so enjoyable, and the organization has been pure class in their respect to the FDNY, NYPD, & EMS, etc.....I say...LET'S GO METS!!

Well, we are 3 back with 9 to go and the next 3 games are against the first place Braves. Unbelievable, but hey, ANYTHING can happen. Hopefully we wont run out of steam from this remarkable run, and i know the Mets hate playing in Atlanta, but we can do this. Just gotta keep the faith.

By the way i like what Bobby V said after the game tonight about the people who said stuff the whole summer about his ballclub and how it all that negativity means nothing now.

*EDIT* Here's that quote from Bobby V:
quote:

``I don't know if we ever like playing in Atlanta, but it sure is exciting,'' Valentine said. ``For all that was said in May, June, July and August, that when we go there it won't mean anything, words don't mean anything -- none of them mean anything. They were all written incorrectly and spoken incorrectly.''
