Update 11/20/01: John Smoltz The Mets have expressed interest in free agent Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz to join their pitching rotation, as have the Yankees, Rangers, Diamondbacks and Phillies, reports the Atlanta Journal Constitution. The Braves want to re-sign Smoltz, and Smoltz would like to return, but says there are a number of factors that throw the potential return into question -- most glaringly, the fact that Atlanta wants to use Smoltz as their closer. The addition of Smoltz to a rotation anchored by Al Leiter and Kevin Appier would easily make the Mets' staff one of the better squads in the National League. In 2001, Smoltz pitched 59.0 innings in 36 games (5 starts). He nailed down ten saves while totaling a won-loss record of 3-3 and an earned run average of 3.38. Villone, who needed surgery to repair a torn meniscus on his left knee after the season, struggled this year, going 6-10 with a 5.89 earned run average with the Rockies and Astros. Since being drafted by the Mariners in 1992, Villone has spent time in seven organizations in a seven-year span. He has a career record of 29-31 in 57 career starts. The 37-year-old has been plagued by injuries in recent years and batted just .202 with 8 home runs and 45 RBI in 2001 for the O's. If signed, Anderson would likely warrant an invitation to spring training and an incentive-laden contract. | Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | Update 11/29: Satoru Komiyama: Newsday reports that the Mets plan to sign Satoru Komiyama, a 36-year-old righthander who has toiled as a starter and a long reliever for more than a decade with Chiba Lotte and Yokohama, by the end of the week. As a free agent two seasons ago, the Mets showed interest in Komiyama, but he opted to sign with Yokohama. This season, Komiyama was 12-9 with a 3.03 ERA in 148 2/3 innings, and is 107-132 with a 3.54 ERA in his Japanese League career. The Mets could envision him filling a long relief role, adding a veteran presence to a bullpen made so much more youthful by the departures of Turk Wendell and Dennis Cook in July. The prospect of playing for the Mets is made more attractive for Komiyama by the presence of Bobby Valentine, who managed Chiba Lotte before coming to the Mets. David Wells: The Daily News reports that both the Mets and Yankees have expressed interest in free agent David Wells, who has made no attempt to veil his desire to play in the Big Apple again. "I don't think there's any secret to that," Wells' agent, Greg Clifton, said. "He said to me, 'Someone could offer me a helluva lot more money and I'd turn it down to go to New York.'" The Mets missed out on Wells last season after Toronto Blue Jays GM Gord Ash was infuriated by the lefthander's public desire to be dealt to the Amazin's, and was subsequently dumped on the Chicago White Sox. Injuries to two discs in Wells' back cut his season short in July, but Wells is undergoing intensive rehab and is about 80 to 85% ready to return. Doctors predict he can be at 100% by January, and Clifton is offering all progress documents to any interested teams. Wells was 5-7 last season with a 4.47 ERA. He pitched just 100 2/3 innings before his back surgery, but from 1995-2000, he averaged 217 1/3 innings pitched and had a 103-61 record. In other Mets news: 11/27 - Signed infielder/outfielder Joe McEwing to a one-year contract; announced John Stearns will serve as as a major league scout. Analysis: The Mets avoid salary arbitration with McEwing, who agrees to a $750,000 contract that could earn him an additional $50,000 in incentive bonuses. He played in 105 games last season, batting .283 with eight home runs and 30 runs batted in. "I'm ecstatic about it," McEwing said. "I'm so happy (the negotiations) went so smoothly and got done so early." Update 11/30: The Newark Star-Ledger reports that the Mets have turned down a deal that would send Matt Lawton and Glendon Rusch to the Milwaukee Brewers for Jeromy Burnitz, and are now discussing a deal that would also include starting pitcher Jeff D'Amico. The Mets and Brewers discussed a Rusch for Burnitz trade in July, after Rusch was inconsistent in a followup to his admirable 2000 season in which he finished 11-11. Lawton is in the walk year of his contract after being acquired from the Twins in July for Rick Reed, and struggled to perform at the same level he did in Minnesota during his two-plus months in New York in '01. The New York Post reports that Lawton, who made $3.9 million and is arbitration eligible. wouldn't be that disappointed to leave New York; while he likes the city, it wasn't his first choice. However, the prospect of playing in Milwaukee doesn't exactly excite him either. "I was like, ‘Milwaukee?' " Lawton said. "It's almost like playing in Minnesota. But then again, you look at Milwaukee, it's a great place to hit. It's a lot better than hitting at Shea Stadium." Conversely, Rusch has said time and time again that he'd prefer to stay in New York, but will see what happens when the chips fall as they may. While Yankees are close to signing Giambi, and Newsday has them also going after Alou, Phillips has implied there will be no free agents unless salary moved, and the trades seem to only be those that include veterans with salary. Post reported the Rusch & Lawton for Burnitz, but Times reported some in organization think that Lawton alone is too much for Burnitz. Newsday reports Wilpon & Doubleday fighting over how much money Wilpon will give Doubleday for his half of team. I think this will not be a good off-season for our national leaguers.  | ||||

I know this is no consolation but maybe we can compete with what we have this season and just wait til next offseason. We are gonna free up alot of cash after next year and I am not sure who the free agents are next year but we should break the bank on a young star. The only consolation is that AOL/Time Warner seems to be putting the brakes on Braves spending. I'm glad Mets don't seem to be going after Tino Martinez. Yankee fans may want him for sentimental reasons, but if you look closely at his stats, he wasn't that good offensively. poor OBP, and SLG wasn't good for a guy who hit over 30 hrs. Fans get carried away about the homers and RBI's, but it was a helluva lot easier to get RBI's batting in Yanks lineup than Mets, and Martinez benefitted from short RF porch. Maybe Braves can sign him to big contract :) | ||||

"The dream that I pictured of playing in the majors has finally come true," Komiyama, who spent the last two seasons with the Yokohama BayStars, said hours after signing a provisional contract with the Mets in Tokyo. "I've yet to actually set foot on a major league mound, but I'm at the point now where I can. I know that it will be rough going in the majors, but I'm just really happy...I want to do my best so I won't have any regrets," Komiyama added. The 36-year-old Komiyama, who will travel to the United States to complete the signing on Dec. 17, declined to reveal details of his deal with the National League club. Komiyama, who posted a 12-9 record with a 3.03 ERA in 2001 with the Central League team, joined the Lotte Marines from Waseda University in 1990 as a first-round draft pick in 1990. He turned down a Mets offer after being released by Lotte following the 1999 season and opted to play for the BayStars but declared free agency at the end of this season with the hopes of pitching in the majors. Komiyama, known for his steady control, has a career 107-132 record with a 3.54 ERA in 304 games. He played under Mets manager Bobby Valentine in 1995 with Lotte. Analysis: Komiyama, 36, was a seven-time All-Star in Japan and played under Bobby Valentine in 1995 when he had his best season (11-4, 2.60 ERA). Last season, Komiyama had a 12-9 record and 3.03 ERA with Yokohama last year, third in the league in victories. In 148 2-3 innings, he walked 30 and struck out 74. "Over there he is known as the Japanese Greg Maddux," general manager Steve Phillips said. "He has tremendous control and works both sides of the plate. He rarely falls behind in the count." The contract for Komiyama, whom the Mets envision working out of the bullpen and as a spot starter, is worth $200,000 and is supplemented by a $300,000 signing bonus. Sheffield update: A source close to the Mets who spoke with Mets Online on the condition of anonymity says that the team is intent on dealing Armando Benitez to the Dodgers along with Jay Payton, Glendon Rusch and a minor leaguer for Sheffield and pitcher Matt Herges. However, news reports have stated that the Dodgers are skeptical that the Mets can afford to take on Sheffield's salary, especially with Nelson Doubleday preparing to finalize the sale of his share of the team to Fred Wilpon in the coming weeks. If a trade can be consummated, the Mets would likely pursue free agent outfielder Roger Cedeno to replace Payton in center field and would target a closer to share the duties with John Franco. I don't like this trade Roberto Alomar: Newsday reports that the Mets and Indians have engaged in preliminary discussions surrounding second baseman Roberto Alomar, representing a new direction in which the Mets can upgrade their offense for the 2002 season. Reportedly, the Indians originally brought Alomar's name up with the Mets, but have waffled in recent days on their intent to deal. The Indians' franchise player batted .336 and scored 113 runs in 2001, and will be 34 on Opening Day. Indians general manager Mark Shapiro flatly denies the report, saying, "We are not in active discussions. We are not shopping Roberto Alomar. I don't think I could find a deal out there I'd do if I looked. He's our best player. I'd have to be blown away to consider it." To make room for Alomar, the Mets' gameplan is thought to include dealing Robin Ventura and moving Edgardo Alfonzo to third base. As long as he is long reliever and/or spot starter (Pat Mahomes role a few years back) , I have no problem with this. Alomar - Indians say they have no intention to trade their best player. Sheffield - still has limited no trade including to Mets, which means bucks. Dodgers are denying that he will be traded, and they supposedly don't like Benitez "personality" - they didn't like the domestic abuse allegations. Wilpon went out of his way to say in NY Times that Phillips can add salary if necessary, but doesn't look too good to me. Lankford hit .252 with 19 homers and 58 RBI last season, similar numbers to Ventura, but the Mets feel they can save close to $2.65 million if this transaction is completed.
