O&A Board Regular Registered: Feb. 01 | But, Froy take a step back for a moment and try to look at things from my angle. Please. My fear of having Government dictate what we can and can not own scares me. I don't want the Government to tell me I can not own my own gun, if I care to choose to, which I do. I don't want the Government to dictate when I can and can not smoke cigarettes in my automobile, as the state Government of 3 Southern States have in recent history done. It is the Government's role to be a helping hand and not a heavy hand. I am totally against Big Government and their involvement on my personal possessions. And I view it as, if we allow them to dictate guns or cigarettes what is next? When will an individual like yourself, Froy, say enough is enough? When your freedom is infringed upon? I doubt you would want it to come to that.

Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | I know I'm late chiming in (again), but the best thing about Ted Nugent (aside from his music, because that's a matter of taste & I think he's great) is.....look at all the passion he evokes from the most unlikely of people! I know Straw is very politically aware and active, but Holy Shit, if an outsider were to read some of the posts in this thread, then gaze at the banner at the top of the page and see this is the Opie & Anthony Message Board, I think they might just shit themselves at the depth of knowledge some of our members possess. At the very least, you gotta love Nugent for the way he makes you feel about any given subject. He puts his ideas out there and damn near everyone listening snaps to love (or hate) him, but few shrug and change the channel/station. But, to agree with 'kid', every time I think I'm on the same page as Uncle Ted, he goes on 5 minutes too long and says something that makes me say, "what a dick." But I still love to listen to the crazy bastard.

O&A Board Veteran Registered: Feb. 01 | Straw, I think that the government has the right and duty to not allow citizens to have guns on the simple basis that it is a matter of security and protection. That as a society we are more dangerous with guns then without them. There is a big difference between banning something that is dangerous with extremely sound reasoning and banning cigarettes or candy, or whatever else you want. The government won't let you own a nuclear warhead, the government is established to protect, to protect us both externally and internally. That is the simple reason that we have laws. O&A Board Regular Registered: Feb. 01 | "Huh?.....I think "wango-tango" rules!!!!!" - that has got to be the funniest thing in this damn up tight thread...I swear to holy heaven... lol As for Froy's comments, everyone views what the government should and shouldn't do differently. I suggest you get politically active. Otherwise, individuals like myself will have more of a say on what occurs in this country than you do. You stand powerless on issues if you don't stand up for them in the eyes of the Government and participate in an active and productive manner. Speaking of being productive, June 26th is New Jersey's Republican Gubernatorial Primary, in which only Republicans can vote in. So please, any registered Republicans in NJ, please contact me for information regarding the candidates Mr. Franks and Mr. Schundler. Thank You.

Psychopath Registered: Jun. 01 | First of all, I'm new, so don't flame too hard. Second of all, njstrawberry, will you marry me?? Nothing sexier than a smart and strong woman... My reason for posting: Froy: Your main point of contention is that this nation would be better off if there were absolutely no guns present. This is true, at least from a domestic peace-keeping perspective. However, guns cannot be un-invented. Guns are here, and as unfortunate as it may be, they are not going anywhere. Just like drugs, the government can pass law after law after law, but the fact is, laws don't elimate drugs, and they won't eliminate guns. By allowing the citizens to arm themselves appropriately against potential criminals or government oppression, the Fathers of the Constitution only supplied the people with the tools necessary to make them free and keep themselves free, and on an even plane with elected officials and those who may attempt to break into your house and rape your child. They fought a bloody war against a tyrannical government, and they didn't want to ever see it happen again, or have it happen to their descendants. I won't disagree with the fact that if there were no guns, the world would be more gooder. But there are guns, and there always will be. Outlawing guns will only leave the guns in the hands of criminals, and the vast majority of crimes committed with firearms today occur with ILLEGALLY owned firearms already (I'll bring up stats if you need them, tomorrow. I'm sleepy now.). With that said, I firmly support waiting limits and registration, to keep guns out of the hands of those who may not be qualified to carry them, or may be predisposed to crime. There should be a happy medium somewhere. I'll say more tomorrow, but it's 5 in the morning, and I have to get up some time tomorrow... No sig yet.

Psychopath Registered: Jun. 01 | What gets me about Nugent (and Rollins, recently), is that they have a little platform and are entertaining, but Opie wants to cut their interview short. Why is that? I think whenever Rollins or Nugent (or Perot or Clinton) are guests, they should have the WHOLE SHOW to take "serious questions only" and play "make the guest cry" and have their gifts smashed by Opie, instead of being pushed out the door once they get on a roll. Sure, I've seen Nugent on "Politically Incorrect," but that bag of douches hair-weave Bill Mahr doesn't let him finish a single thought. Dunno, maybe I just need some breakfast... Psychopath Registered: May. 01 | NJstrawberry, let me say first that I totally respect your political activism and your desire to be fully educated as to the way your country is run. Now, before you label me UNeducated, let me tell you why this isn't for me. In the history of America, I am sure you will agree with me that there have been few to none politicians who make good on everything they say. Part of politics is spinning things we already know into sounding like something different and new. Or making promises that they have no right or power to make in the first place. There have been politicians that have done great, great things for this country, but I suspect that most of them had ulterior motives for this. I do not believe that everyone who goes into politics is a bad or even dishonest person. I believe that once they commit to the political machine, they find it much harder to keep their innocence and they may even lose sight of the reason they got into the machine in the first place. I will even venture to say that Politicians don't corrupt politics, Politics corrupt politicians. Let's say that in our Democracy, the majority DID elect the president, and not the electoral college or a stupid vote tallying system or Jeb Bush. What if the majority of our country is a bunch of semiretarded maniacs? That means our president would be one who is right for the semiretarded maniacs. They may be a majority, but they certainly aren't representative of what the country has to offer. And the NON -semiretarded maniacs would then be rather neglected in the Congress' and the President's endeavors. I have not seen ONE form of government that, IN PRACTICE, either lives up to the standards it sets forth, or is as truly for the people as a government should be. We DO have one of the best governents, if not THE best, in the world. But there is sooooo much we do not know about the inner-workings of this juggernaut, and I for one find my head reeling when I try to delve into the intricacies of it. We are all allowed a certain amount of ignorance in our lives that we can spread as thin as we wish, but I focus most of mine on the government. I am able to live a relatively free life by nodding my head at the powers-that-be and saying, "Yessuh, yessuh bawss, yessuh." I truly respect you for your thirst for knowledge in that area, but (wo)man, I personally refuse to see any reason for me to get into that black hole I call politics. And to bring this reply back to what it was meant for, my ignorance reaches its breaking strain when it flaps over the part of our government's history called "Janet Reno". That vulgar display she set forth with the taking of that poor Cuban boy disgusted me. And instead of fighting a battle that sooo many people have lost, I look away from the badness and pretend it isn't there. I hope this doesn't make you think less of me, strawberry, because I think quite highly of you. little newbie since 5-31-01

O&A Board Regular Registered: Feb. 01 | quote]Let's say that in our Democracy, the majority DID elect the president, and not the Electoral College or a stupid vote tallying system or Jeb Bush. Just by that statement you have shown that you are uneducated in the manner, in which our President is elected. I suggest you go to the Library of Congress sometime and read why we have the Electoral College and why it's purpose is ever so needed in this day and age. I don't think any less of you, I respect all opinions and I know there are a million things out there that cover a wide array of topics and issues that I, myself, need to become more familiar with and educated about. I am sure the opportunity will arise in the future when you will enlighten me. I just wish that every news channel we watch wouldn't be so far to the liberal left, as most are. Sometimes, you have to stand in the middle to get a good reflection of what's around you. I feel bad for people that believe everything that ABC or CBS spits out at them. Those are the voters, who think they are making a right choice in the ballot box and are actually making the biggest mistake ever. As for your statement on politicians brainwashing or negatively influencing other politicians, you are on the right track but slightly off. I have found out, through personal on goings, that it is the higher ups from a particular party that do the most damage. In fact, for a recent election, I was told exactly who to back verbally so my district would support them. I had two choices, one was to support who I wanted regardless or go along with what they told me to do. Now, since I am planning on moving up within the party and politics I would have had to make a decision that wouldn't come back to bite me in the ass because when I go for an election that costs big bucks those are the same people I have to go ask for financial backing from. I was lucky that the person they wanted me to back I had been supporting all along. So, my decision was made prior to their proposition. Another time, I dared to verbally go against whom they wanted me to back for the Gubernatorial race for this election. I am lucky that the guy they wanted me to back was dropped from primary for June 26th. So, again by the grace of pure luck I was saved from burning myself within the political realm of my party. Next time, I may not be so lucky. It's a matter of how far I want to advance. I am not Jon Corzine, I can't tell my party to go to hell because I have $60 million of my own money to invest into my Senate run. Understand? Am I an honest politician? No, because I don't consider myself to be one. I see myself as a public servant. The minute I slap the politician label to my name is the day I realize I have been bought. Do we need a major over-haul of the way we handle our politics? Yes. Will happen over night? I doubt it would even occur in our lifetime. It will be a slow progression, if any. That's why we need clear thinkers to enter this unknown world of politics. That's why I do what I do. If I can make the slightest change for the better today, then I don't care if I am out of the game tomorrow. This message was edited by njstrawberry on 6-16-01 @ 4:36 AM

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | What is with everyone picking on Socialism?:) I would just like to make my points. The Republican Party was the liberal party until Roosevelt when the Democrats took over that. Also you talk about wheter the Democrats or Republicans approved Women's Suffrage but you are forgetting that almost all the Suffragettes were Socialists. Many of these Progressive ideas and programs that came through were because of Socialists. As for Straw you say Socialist countries are oppressive I assume you are talking about the Soviet Union, China, etc. Well in my opinion those do not qualify as a true socialism to me. They are Dictatorial State Capitalisms. Now before you go off and say that all Socialists want to do is oppress research it because I take serious offense to wanting to oppess people's rights. Psychopath Registered: May. 01 | You have a good, healthy attitude about the way the world is and the political machine is run. I guess I didn't express myself as eloquently as I had liked when I was talking about the politicians being influenced by politics and vice versa. What I am saying is that there seem to be a lot of people in politics who start in the field to make a difference in the way things are run. These same people also seem to get caught up in the whole drama and theater of politics, and often lose sight of their goals. OR, even worse, their goals often become twisted towards their party's or colleagues' own. I know for a fact that the responsibilities involved in any public offense are tremendous, and I can see how one who is not of EXTREMELY steadfast opinions can begin to tire against all the pressures they endure. But see, to allow a politician any kind of leeway when it comes to keeping their opinions is wrong. It's like saying, "Doctors are people, too.", whichis a statement used in defense of malpractice, etc., and it is a statement I fucking loathe. Doctors hold the lives of people in their hands many times a day, many days a week, etc. These people should be the PINNACLES of society, and not some kid with a drug-arrest record as long as Ron Jeremy's schlong. The same goes for politicians. i do not feel it is unfair to insist that my politicians are people who are steadfast, intelligent, and above the usual problems of most people. As a matter of fact, i think it is a necessity to have people like that in office. You are not only an example to everyone you touch as a politician, but you also have been granted the greatest forum in the world. Where was I going with this? Oh yeah, you said you were lucky the candidate they told you to endorse was the one you had liked from the get-go. That IS lucky. I hope someday your efforts DO make a difference, but I on the other hand am much more cynical. It makes me feel better to sit back and be angry with the government and go on with my life than it does to activate myself in it. Which is something I feel guilty about and wish our country wasn't so full of people with my attitude. But if someone running under the banner of NJStrawberry came around to run for office, I would then know who to vote for. And you are right, I don't know a hell of a lot about the electoral college. But what I do know is that I did NOT want GWB to win this past election, and he won in a shady-as-shit way. I cannot respect a man whose grasp of the language this country was founded on is limited to countless misuse and mispronunciation of common words. I am not a linguistical seperatist, but I do believe that if you choose a language to speak, whether it be Spanish, English, or even Swahili, you should KNOW it. I, as a writer, feel that the power of a properly-wielded vocabulary rivals any other weapon you can place in front of me. I don't know if I added to the discussion at all, straw, but you definitely spark something in me, debate-wise. a really lot.
