Valentin needs to be added to roster tonight or released. If he is added, someone else needs to be bumped. Kane Davis, Grant Roberts, Gary Mathews Jr. all out of options. I think any deal will be minor.

I really like Kane Davis and Grant Roberts and I have no problem seeing GMJ go. D'Amico looked great yesterday by the way. Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | Mets Notebook 3-26: YOU'RE ON: The Mets purchased the contract of infielder John Valentin yesterday, avoiding a midnight deadline earmarked in his contract. If the Mets had failed to add him to the roster by today, the 35-year-old veteran could have demanded his release. Valentin projects to serve as a right-handed hitting reserve who can play all four infield positions for New York. He will make a minimum of $550,000, with performance incentives that could earn him up to $450,000 more. LOOKING SHARP: Jeff D'Amico allowed one run on three hits through six innings yesterday as the Mets defeated the Detroit Tigers at Lakeland, 3-1. Jorge Toca belted a solo homer off of starter Jose Lima in the second inning and added an RBI double against closer Matt Anderson in the ninth. With a number of star players ailing with injuries, the Mets brought just one regular - center fielder Jay Payton. Manager Bobby Valentine apologized to Tigers manager Phil Garner before the game. "He said the Yankees do it to him all the time," Valentine said. BUMPS AND BRUISES: The Mets are looking healthier. Robbie Alomar's sore left heel has recuperated to the point where he can play today while Mike Piazza's left thigh contusion and Mo Vaughn's left hamstring strain continue to heal. Bobby Valentine told reporters that Rey Ordonez has a case of shin splints and Roger Cedeno's hand is still bothering him from a collision at home plate earlier this spring. SHOT THROUGH THE ARM: Reliever Kane Davis had a cortisone shot administered to his right elbow Sunday, becoming just one more concern in a bullpen that is already out of wack with the absence of setup man John Franco until mid-April at the earliest. "He asked for it," Mets general manager Steve Phillips said. "He wanted it. Sometimes a shot here (in the elbow) helps more up here (in the head). I think he's fine. I know he's fine. He's been throwing 95 (mph) without any problems." Davis says the pain has reduced in his arm by about half. If it becomes necessary that he must go on the disabled list, the Mets could look to veteran Pete Walker, whom Bobby Valentine has raved about this spring. AROUND THE MAJORS: Yankees third baseman Robin Ventura sprained his ankle while tripping over the first base bag in yesterday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater and is questionable for Opening Day... former Mets reliever Rich Rodriguez, who was horribly ineffective during his term with New York in 2000, was dealt by the Atlanta Braves to the Texas Rangers for a player to be named... the Houston Astros released lefthander C.J. Nitkowski, who pitched briefly with the Mets last September. O&A Board Veteran Registered: Feb. 01 | I had to bring this up after several of us watched that putrid performance against LA the other night. 4 fucking errors by like the 5th inning?! There is no reason why that infield should committ four errors all season. I believe in the Faith... that can save me. I believe in the hope and I pray... O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | quote: Well, they followed that up with 5 errors. The one thing they were supposed to do is play good defense, and yesterday errors by Valentin, Vaughn, Ordonez, Alomar, & Cedeno, in addition to blown popup between Alomar & Payton. Now Vaughn, Valentin, and even Cedeno I can understand, but Ordonez & Alomar??? Hopefully this is just Spring blues, although it is getting late. Mets made minor pickups off waivers, picking up Chris Latham from Toronto. He has no options, so Mets might keep him instead of Gary Mathews Jr, or try to sneak him down to Norfolk.

Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | Especially when you follow it with a five error game. Get them all out now... Mets Notebook 3-28: CHECKING OUT: A sloppy, five-error display in last night's 7-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals wraps up the Mets' home Grapefruit League schedule at Thomas J. White Stadium, leaving home Florida fans with a bad taste in their mouths. "It is never a good time to play like we've played the last two days," Bobby Valentine said. "It looks like everyone's tired and it looks like there's no intensity to their fielding. I'd have to say right now it's not what I expected this time of the spring." New York committed four errors Tuesday to betray starting pitcher Pedro Astacio; the victim yesterday was staff ace Al Leiter, who allowed five runs (one earned) over three innings. He hopes the Mets can turn it around by Monday, when he will take the mound at Shea Stadium on Opening Day. "It's important to get off to a good start," Leiter said. "Since I've been here, I don't remember us having a good April. "It stinks when you have to play catch-up the whole time." LAST GAME?: The game played yesterday afternoon in Port St. Lucie could have possibly been the Mets' final home game at the complex. The Mets, citing lagging attendance at the St. Lucie County Sports Complex, have spoke openly about the possibility of moving to a new spring home next season. The team has a five-year extension on the table from the county which they have until August to activate, but the Mets were hoping for a one or three year pact. ANOTHER IN THE MIX: The Mets claimed two players off of waivers yesterday; Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Chris Latham and Montreal Expos first baseman Andy Tracy. The club optioned Tracy to Norfolk (AAA) of the International League and placed Latham on the 40-man roster - at least for the time being. Latham, 28, split last season between the Blue Jays and Syracuse (AAA) of the International League. With Toronto, the switch-hitter batted .274 (20-73) with two homers and 10 RBI in 43 games. He was hitting .286 (16-56) with one homer and six RBI in 21 games with Toronto this spring. Tracy, 28, spent most of last season with Ottawa (AAA) of the International League. In a brief tour of duty with Montreal, he hit .109 (6-55) with two homers and eight RBI in 38 games. He had notched just one hit in 31 at-bats this spring with the Expos. Bobby Valentine wasn't quite sure yesterday how Latham figured into a crowded outfield mix that already has Timo Perez and Gary Matthews, Jr. jockeying for one roster spot. "I haven't considered this thing, so I'm not going to comment on this thing," he said. BREAKING THE RULES?: Umpire "Country" Joe West told Bobby Valentine that Saturo Komiyama's delivery was in violation of Rule 8.01a, which states that a pitcher must continue "without interruption or alteration" after starting his windup. Komiyama, as he has professionally for 12 years, has a brief pause before delivering the pitch. "I take exception that it's this late in the spring and they've seen him all spring and never said anything," Valentine said. "This kid is trying to make the team. They pull this (stuff) and say something when he has one more appearance this spring." Komiyama said that he wasn't aware he was breaking the tiles, but will try to find out what the problem is and correct it. GEARING UP: The Mets have leaked two of their surprises for Monday's Opening Day ceremonies. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, taking the reins of a city that was run by devoted Yankees fan Rudy Giuliani for eight years, will throw out the first pitch. Lisa Beamer will also be honored by New York. Beamer is the widow of Todd Beamer, one of the heroic passengers aboard Flight 93 who took back the aircraft and Salad Tosser Left Fielder, Center Fielder, and First Baseman **Official Painter of Billboards** "Opie and Anthony: The thinking mans Beavis and Butthead" -Playboy   This message was edited by hammersavage on 3-28-02 @ 1:08 PM

Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 01 | watching the game today....mets win 5-1 and it looks like Piazza's had enough of pitchers hitting him, Guerillmo Mota hit Mike on the hip. Mike was replaced by a pinchrunner and then waited until Mota was done with his appearance, he waited until Mota was walking back to the bullpen followed him and then grabbed Mota by the jersey and started pretty much shakking and yelling at him, he stopped himself from grabbing Mota's neck. They were broken up by teammates, this all happened between innings. Hopefully Mike won't be suspended. Hey he's not breathing. Don't people usually breathe?

Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | Its great to see Piazza show some emotion. Mets Notebook 3-29-02 SHAKE DOWN: The message sent to the pitchers of the National League was clear -- don't mess with Mike Piazza, not this season. After earning a reputation of questionable merit with fans as more of a lamb than a lion, stemming mostly from his decision not to retaliate against Roger Clemens of the New York Yankees in the 2000 World Series bat-throwing incident, Piazza finally snapped yesterday. Having already been hit by pitches three times this spring, Piazza had a bone to pick when he was drilled in the left thigh yesterday on a 3-0 pitch by Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Guillermo Mota; nearly the same spot where he was plunked by Montreal Expos starter Britt Reames on Saturday. Piazza was lifted for a pinch-runner, but instead of retiring to the clubhouse as players usually will in spring training, he waited in the Mets' open-air dugout at Holman Stadium, baking and stewing in the sun. After Mota completed his day of work in the eighth, Piazza approached the righthander as he left the playing field, exchanging words and then gripping Mota with both hands near the hurler's neck. Both benches emptied and Mets hitting coach Dave Engle was first on the scene, ripping Piazza away. "You guys just have to draw your own conclusions right now," Piazza said. "I've got to sit tight and once everything gets out, we'll go from there. There will be some discrepancy involved, so I can't say anything." Mota, who later called Piazza's actions "unprofessional" and claimed he had lost a lot of respect for him, said he told Piazza, "I'm sorry," and "I don't mean to do that," to which Piazza replied, "Throw the ball in the middle." WRAPPING UP: The incident stole the thunder from New York's 5-1 win over the Dodgers, completing the Florida stretch of the Mets' preseason. Steve Trachsel turned in a successful final tune-up start before he is slated to pitch against the Pittsburgh Pirates next Wednesday at Shea Stadium, allowing just four hits over five shutout innings. Mo Vaughn was 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a diving grab at first base. Jay Payton and Joe McEwing homered for the Mets, who finish Florida with a record of 12-17-1 and will fly to Arlington to play two exhibition games against the Texas Rangers. RUMOR MILL: The Daily News reports that the Mets have re-opened discussions with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays regarding right-hander Esteban Yan, with two major league executives confirming that the Mets felt their chances were "better than 50-50". Yan, 27, was 4-6 with a 3.90 ERA in 54 appearances last season with Tampa Bay. His fastball has been clocked as high as 98 MPH to go with a nasty slider and a splitter, but he has clearly struggled in pressure situations. His 9 blown saves led the American League in 2001, ranking second in lowest save percentage (71.0%). IRONING IT OUT: Bobby Valentine spoke with umpires yesterday and is confident that righthander Saturo Komiyama won't be targeted for a perceived breaking of the rules. Umpire "Country" Joe West told Valentine Tuesday that Komiyama's delivery was in violation of Rule 8.01a, which states that a pitcher must continue "without interruption or alteration" after starting his windup. Komiyama, as he has professionally for 12 years, has a brief pause before delivering the pitch. But on that topic, it always annoyed me that Fatso & Fruitloops keep saying that MSG was basic when they had Yankees; in reality MSG was always premium on Cablevision. Good signs so far; Jay Payton with Bases loaded took a walk, and followed by Sac Fly by Ordonez. Oh and Teenweek, Cablevision has me by the balls because of their Optimum-On-Line; it is too good to give up. This message was edited by PeterDragon on 4-1-02 @ 1:58 PM

I say this as a Mo Vaughn Fan. I grew up watching the Sox and going to games at their Triple A affiliate in Pawtucket. I saw Vaughn come up and he simply has no plate discipline and never will. He will have some HUGE hits for the Mets...but he will also come close to leading the league in Strikeouts.

Weathers - great relief Benitez - still gives up a stupid run, but meaningless. Mets - lots of k's (hitting, not pitching). It's vs lowly Pirates (minus Giles), but I'll take it. By the way, in yesterday's ESPN magazine, Piazza says once again that he is NOT moving from catcher. I'm Not Moving by Mike Piazza This message was edited by PeterDragon on 4-1-02 @ 4:43 PM

Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | Hey, the Yankees started 0-3 in '98 when they won 114 games. Baseball is a long season but they have shown some life. Notes on the Gary Matthews deal: Mets deal Matthews, add Christensen, Bale Club looks to upgrade reserve outfield position April 4, 2002 Gary Matthews, Jr. was dealt to the Baltimore Orioles Wednesday for left-handed pitcher John Bale. (Photo: Ed Tsunoda) NEW YORK -- The New York Mets continued to tinker with their roster Wednesday, claiming outfielder McKay Christensen on waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers and dealing outfielder Gary Matthews, Jr. to the Baltimore Orioles for left-hander John Bale. "With these moves today, we were able to add a quality left-handed arm into our system," Mets general manager Steve Phillips said in a press release. "We think Bale has the ability and potential to help us at the major league level at some point this season. In the process we were able to maintain our depth in the outfield with McKay Christensen, who can run and has strong offensive and defensive tools." Despite a career .217 batting average over parts of three seasons with the San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh, the Mets had high hopes for Matthews coming into spring training this season after acquiring him for cash from Pittsburgh on December 28, 2001. Manager Bobby Valentine spoke highly of him in winter discussions, and some close to the team considered the 29-year-old switch-hitter a possible candidate to overtake Jay Payton for the everyday center field job. Things never quite worked out that way for Matthews, who batted just .164 in a lackluster spring training effort. Outfielder Timo Perez far and away outplayed Matthews, batting .327 with flashes of brilliant defense, but lost out to Matthews as the Mets broke camp simply because Perez had one minor-league option remaining and Matthews had none. He appeared in both of New York's regular season games this season, fouling out to left field as a pinch-hitter in Monday's 6-2 win and pinch-running for Mo Vaughn in the eighth inning of yesterday's 5-3 loss. The deal with Baltimore was made necessary by the acquisition of Christensen, who is expected to join the Mets in time for Thursday's series finale with the Pittsburgh Pirates at Shea Stadium. A career .248 hitter over parts of three seasons with the Chicago White Sox (1999-2001) and the Dodgers, Christensen was originally drafted by the California Angels in the first round of the June 1994 Free Agent Draft after being named the fastest player in the draft by Baseball America. In 2001 with Los Angeles, Christensen batted .327 in 28 games (16-49), hitting one home run and collecting seven RBI. Prior to being dealt to the Dodgers for Double-A pitcher Wade Parrish on July 13, Christensen had one hit in four at-bats with the White Sox. He has a career minor league batting average of .281 over six seasons. Bale, 27, was 1-0 with a 3.04 earned run average in 14 appearances with the Orioles last season. In 26.2 innings, the southpaw allowed 18 hits and walked 17 batters, striking out 21. He has a career ERA of 5.01, having pitched in three other games with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1999 and 2000. In order to make room for Christensen on New York's 40-man roster, they designated minor-league first baseman Andy Tracy for assignment. The Mets claimed Tracy on waivers from the Montreal Expos on March 27th. The club also announced Wednesday that outfielder Chris Latham, claimed on March 27th from the Blue Jays, had cleared waivers and had 72 hours to decide whether or not he would accept an assignment to Norfolk (AAA) of the International League.
