Man....in the three stages of life. He walks of four legs when he's a baby, two legs as an adult, and has a cane as his third leg in his elder years.

Now THAT's an easy riddle fbdfl%@... :)

And I can confirm that the first one is indeed a trick question. av8er said "The 1 mile distance is just thrown in to confuse the askee" ... in fact, if the track were longer it would be possible to get the avg up to 60 mph.

Oh, my credentials are, I'm an SAT tutor and this kind of shit fools ALL the high-school juniors...

And how dumb is the guy at the office asking random math problems he doesn't know the right answers to? :)

There's another reason 90mph is the wrong answer.
If you do the first lap in 30 mph, you can't just automatically be going 90 for the second one. There's acceleration time between 30 and the correct answer to consider. Thus, there's a different answer for different cars, drivers, track surfaces, bank angles, etc.

here is a tough one.

A woman shoots her husband.
Then she holds him under water for over 5 minutes.
Finally, she hangs him.
But 5 minutes later they both go out together and enjoy a wonderful dinner together.
How can this be?

If three cats catch three mice in three minutes, how many cats would be needed to catch 100 mice in 100
minutes?

It is a trick question after all. All the question is asking is the AVERAGE of the 2 laps. The 1 mile distance is just thrown in to confuse the askee. The last time I remember calculating averages you were supposed to take the sum of the means divided by the number of means to get your average.

Ok, that's the average grade, average cost, etc. Average speed is different... because you dont have a bunch of things to add together and divide. Like if you stand still for a minute and then drive at 100 miles an hour for a year, your average speed is 50 mph your saying? You take the velocity throughout the experiment at x intervals of time (the more x, the closer to the right answer) and divide... sounds like calculus, huh? Your way of doing it is like if 20 people get a hundred on a test, and others get other grades, you only count the 100 one time when you get the average grade.

I am praying thats sarcasm. You're assuming that you're going at a constant speed. You know why you can do that? Because if thats your AVERAGE VELOCITY for the lap, it WORKS THE SAME, mathematically. And you think you can go from 0-30 immediately for the first lap, using your logic?

Three cats... they can catch one a minute among them both times.

At this point, I'm probably going to give up on this problem and pray that people open their minds to think about the problem. Let others try and explain. I will, however, present the problem to some of my geek buddies at Stuy. I'll be back with the distribution of answers soon. (1 person so far says you'd need to go infinitely fast)

Three cats is right.

The other question: I say you will never reach an average speed of 60 mph. You will get exponentially close, but never reach it.

Ahhh, The riddle of the sphinx.

Hey Painter I could be wrong but that riddle was in Edipus Rex and it was a Griphon who asked it...and the answer is man cause Edipus got it right and the Griphon left Thebes alone after years of tormenting it...

Sad story though cause this happened right after he killed his father and later he goes and starts boinging his mom...those Greeks they sure knew how to tell a story...(nothing personal GrkQT)

SYNT, why are yoy making such a big deal about this?is it some kind of competition that if you lose you'll probably get eaten, but if you win you get to find your way out of the goblin caves and get reunited with your dwarven friends?

edit-and 2 tired, you got it all right, yet all wrong.it was the exact situation you said, with Oedipus and thebes, but it WAS the sphinx

Hey. Leave Grump out of this.

One comment on the Oedipus Rex front...in the version I read, it was a Sphinx. I'm sure there are variationsm, there always are.

From sparknotes.com...
quote:

The story of Oedipus is simple and well-known. Oedipus arrives at Thebes a stranger and finds the town under the curse of the Sphinx, who will not free the city unless her riddle is answered. Oedipus solves the riddle and, since the king has recently been murdered, becomes the king and marries the queen. In time, he comes to learn that he is actually a Theban, the king's son, cast out of Thebes as a baby. He has killed his father and married his mother. Horrified, he blinds himself and leaves Thebes forever.

Sorry guys you were right...I wonder why I thought it was a Griphon...

Here is a riddle for everybody:

As I was going to St-Ives, I met a man with 7 wives, every wife had 7 sacks, every sack had 7 cats, every cat had 7 kittens. How many were going to St-Ives?
