Is it hit or miss with those books on tape? I've heard that the book can suck if the reader does as well

I think it makes a difference in how the story is read and who reads the story when it comes to books on tape. I listened to a Patricia Cornwell novel and I couldn't stand the "voice" the reader did for one of the main male characters. It drove me so completely crazy that I couldn't concentrate on the story.

I listened to a Stephen King book on tape and he did the reading himself. It was awesome if you enjoy like his work. However, do not listen to one of his novels while driving alone after dark. Very creepy...

Sounds interesting, Kindred. Give me a name of a scary Stephen King novel to listen to after dark while in the car. I wonder how creepy it can be.

Froy, what theater did Collins serve in? Under whom?

Both actually. He served in the Pacific during 1942 and led a division on Guadalcanal. Then he transferred to the ETO and led the VII Corps under Bradley who was the American Ground Commander. He later served as Army Chief of Staff throughout Korea, and was involved in the firing of General MacArthur. The story was interesting, but he spent more time reciting history than giving his own personal accounts. It's a quick read though.

It's called Blood and Smoke and is only available in audio format. Make sure when you listen to the story "1408" you have the lights on in your car...

I just finished reading "The Dirt", Motley Crue's autobiography.
I'm not a big Crue fan, but after they were on the show, I decided to read it.

Good read. They were pretty honest, and it gives a little insight into how screwed up they were.

Takes the Myan Doomsday Calendar, the Great Pyramids, etc. and combines them into a really good conspiracy story that makes the X-Files look like Teletubbies. Worth the read.

Well I finished The Beginning and the End by Mahfouz, and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be....the ending made the book well worth reading.

Now I am reading Warriors and the Prophet: The Struggle for Islam by Mark Huband for my Middle Eastern History class...its pretty interesting so far.

Arthur, if you liked that book, I'd definitely recommend Fingerprints of the Gods by Graham Hancock....about the similarities between Egyptian and South/Latin American civilizations, that there was an even older, more advanced culture that taught them everything...etc. lots of detail. Amazing, eye-opening book!

Missed it; (that's what I get for not checking TV guide or Ikeaboy's sig )

Was it a worthwhile special? does LOTR look good?
I'll be truly dissapointed if the movie blows.

Reading Red Emma Speaks which is basically an assortment of writings by Emma Goldman. Really good book.

Also the Cornel West Reader which is an interesting read so far(half way thru).

Started HHGTTG too and so far am nearing the end of the first book.

Also got the Hobbit and LOTR which I'll try to start up as soon as I can.

I'm currently reading Isle of Dogs by Patricia Cornwell. I don't like it all tht much, she's trying to be carl Hiaasen and it aint working. MY next book will be Last Man Standing by David Baldacci, hope it doesn't suck as much as his last book did. Hopefully, that'll take me into January when I can pick up Up Country by Nelson Demille, best writer to come out of Long Island and then The Summons by John Grisham. His last book sucked too.

I just got "The Dirt" - Motley Crue's Book. Can't wait to get into this book.

Over the summer i read If Chins Could Kill, Bruce Campbell's autobiography (campbell is god) & Antichrist Superstar, Marilyn Manson's autobiography.

as soon as i graduated college in may i needed to clear my mind of all things educational. but i think i locked the door & lost the key cause i picked up Dante's Inferno right after reading about manson & i couldn't even get 4 pages into it before tossing it onto my bookshelf where it sits & collects dust.

damn sig.

Also just finished the first Harry Potter book since I felt like I was the only human alive who hasn't read any of them.

My favorite book ever was "SlaughterHouse V" by Kurt Vonnegaut. I think the mere concept of that book is fantastic. I just finished reading "Watchers" by Dean Koontz(great book),and now I've starting reading "The Prince" by Niccolo Machiavelli

I read a bunch of books over the holidays, Sinatra: Behind the Legend, Bogart: In Search of My Father, The Wild Blue by Stephen Ambrose, Edge of Danger & Sheba, both by Jack Higgins.

I just picked up and began reading Humphrey Bogart by Benchley and am also reading The Ride of the 2nd Horseman: The Birth and Death of War.

Just finished "One Door Away from Heaven" by Dean Koontz. Considering it took me almost a month to read, I guess it wasn't very good.

I tried so hard and got so far, but in the end it doesn't even matter
