Its not cool to even kid around about since some people will do what you said any some unscrupulous person with the know how will hack them. Definitely not cool. As for my PC, well I went the lazy route with my latest box and bought a VAIO. Yes I know putting a box together piece by piece is cheaper and you get better parts but what the fuck.... I've also got a Sony VAIO laptop, i like the VAIO line alot. Its got a sweet DVD player to watch movies on the plane or train. The PC is networked on a cable modem with a LinkSys router to my girlfriend's PC in the other room. I also have the audio output going to my DENON receiver in the living room to blast MP3's on my surround sound. My favorite toy tho is the MP3 readable CD player i bought for $100 at WalMart. I can burn 200+ songs on 1 CD and listen to it in the car or wherever. I love that fucking thing. ________________ Charcole brickette? O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I got to get those MP3 CD players. The best are the Rio Volt and its identical clone(name escapes me). The clone is exactly the same except 20 bucks cheaper. If any of you has the name that would be great. But I have my eye on the TDK MOJO. Unlike the Volt which shows the songs by folders, the Mojo does it by tags. So folders are not really needed. The Mojo has the best navigation system. Also these players load the songs into memory so when you have no skip when playing MP3 CD's. And congrats on the cable modem, broadband is the only way to go. If you have any other computers that you would like to get access to that cable/dsl modem than you have to do some home networking. There is Phoneline which networks through your phonelines but I wouldn't recommend that too much. Then there is ethernet which is the cheapest and fastest but you don't need that speed because there is no internet speed that can test it. If you are interested in that definitely get a Linksys or a Netgear you won't be disappointed. Then there is the wireless ones which are the coolest, I would say the two best are the D-Link and Linksys. For more information on this Visit this Website E-Mail Me IM me at stickysituation2

Psychopath Registered: Jan. 01 | I have tested some routers and it is a little bit more, but the SMC Barricade works great for a home network. . 4 ports and a built in print server. It also does firewalling. If you are ever looking for a great geek site that reviews equipment, www.tomshardware.com. Some of it gets pretty technical, but it does a great job. Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | Hey all you network gurus, I have a question for you. I have 3 machines and a cable modem. I would like to network them all together and be able to share my cable modem across them. I have accomplished this in the past using 602Pro LanSuite and also WinMe Internet Connection Sharing. I would like to know, what is the easiest most secure (knowing that nothing is completely secure) way to accomplish this? I don't want to have to buy a router, I would like to try to do this with the hardware I have. I have - 3 Pentium-based PCs Several NICs 9 Port hub Cable Modem Any ideas?

Psychopath Registered: Jan. 01 | Kid, it sounds like you are looking for a software firewalling/proxy server solution. IMHO a $100-$150 router is well worth the money. The Microsoft firewalling solutions are not good. You have to by a solid proxy server piece of software and probably a commercial firewall as opposed to something like the free solutions like zone alarm. The other problem with this is that windows and the software for it are huge memory hogs, basically you will be setting up a machine to act as a server and nothing else. The other optionis Linux. It handles being a server very well and the 2.4 kernal has stateful firewalling support which can prevent DoS attacks. Also, there are free firewalling programs and it can still be used to surf or play games while acting as a server. It sounds like you want to stay with Windows so I would spend a little money, it will be the best solution. Psychopath Registered: Jun. 01 | Since you already have a hub, you don't need a router/switch combination. By the time you compare the cost of a router to the software you need, the router solution will prob be cheaper. www.pricewatch.com DasDoomper ...sig pic under construction...

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I would really recommend the router. You Visit this Website for a real good deal on a 1-port router. It's about $85. That's the best 1-port router on the market not counting the Netgear RT311 which is basically the same in performance. Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | You two are assuming that I would ever pay for software. tsk tsk. I know that a router would be the best solution but it defeats my purpose. I would like to have a machine act as a server for both file sharing and connection to the internet. I don't know why, but I just have that scenario set in my head. I had a router previously, but was unable to get it to work with my cable modem. hell, maybe I'll try it again, but I just wanted some alternatives. Also, I have Sun SparcClassic Unix box, but I think it's useless. It has only one NIC and doesn't seem to be expandable. The damn thing doesn't even have a floppy drive. Is it a paper weight?

O&A Board Regular Registered: Feb. 01 | Kid, do what I do, run the cable modem into a machine, I use the one that I normally use. Run another cable to the hub. (using 2 nics in the primary machine, or server if you will). Then connect the other machines to the hub and use ICS, it is so easy to use, little overhead (it is microsoft) and you are cooking. ICS works better then wingate or winroute or any of those. You can also install a firewall on this machine if you wish. If you need one, I have quite a few on my FTP, just let me know.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Kid you might want to look into Wingate as a software solution if you absolutely need software. As for the Sparc machine you could slap Linux on it and breath new life into it;). Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | KFT, you just described my current setup, I just know that ICS is horribly vulnerable. I may be stuck with that until I give in and buy a router though. When I used 602ProLanSuite, it worked well, but I'm really just itching to try something new. thanks for the advice guys. **EDIT AM, how would I install Linux on a machine that has no floppy or CDROM drive?

I might be able to help you tonight, if that's not too late. But, maybe one of the other geeks has another idea. **INCOMING IDEA** If you use WinRAR, you can break the file up into smaller parts that would be "e-mailable". But you would need WinRAR and so would the person you are e-mailing it to. It's a freeware program, but it's quite a hassle to go through for one pic if you don't already have WinRAR.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Spit it depends what type of file that is. You could conceivably zip it but I would assume it would only bring it down 10% or so in filesize because generally the multimedia files are already compressed. Or if you prefer there is a service Visit this Website. They allow up to 75MB in attachments and what you do is upload your file to the server and send the email to whoever and they will go to the site and download it. It is a great service. O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Time for a question from me. I'm considering putting FreeBSD on my system in addition to ME, 2K, and Mandrake Linux. I'm about to do a full format of the entire system so what order should I put it in so BSD will be able to work well. Normally without it would go ME, 2K, and Linux. But with BSD what would the order be? Any other tips concerning the installation?
